## What is National Gallery Tour Buddy?

Sometimes you find a place so genuinely special that you recall visiting there with great fondness. The National Gallery is one such. It is an island of calm that keeps itself afloat amidst the chaotic sea of London traffic.

The gallery is centrally located at Trafalgar Square overlooking the majestic Nelson’s Column. This places it within a stone’s throw of several attractions, including Big Ben, Westminster, Downing Street, Horse Guards, St. James's Park, Hyde Park, and Buckingham Palace. Its location at the beating heart of London practically leaves you with no excuse not to visit and visit, you must! Your eyes will feast on a sumptuous parade of spectacular paintings that is famed for its beauty and breadth! 

The sprawling rooms of the gallery are arranged thematically as well as chronologically. To begin a chronological journey start your itinerary from the Sainsbury's wing that features some of the oldest works in the collection and can be dated to the Early Renaissance. Transitioning through the long corridor will bring you to the western entrance of the main building which is the epicentre of the collection. You are now surrounded by Titians and Raphaels and a collection of gloriously beautiful High Renaissance works. Room after room from now on - feast your eyes on a captivating array of Renaissance paintings. As you walk from Italy via Spain and France you would have navigated four hundred years of European art from these regions. Your penultimate stop is home ground - paintings of English greats such as JMW Turner and Gainsborough which makes the superb collection of Impressionist works your final stop. Walking through the doors and into the London traffic brings you back from 19th-century France but you can continue your visit virtually through the app and enjoy numerous paíwwwwwwaa as Perhaps you could favourite them and make a wish list and ask the app to suggest the itinerary for your next visit. I would give this app 3 stars for the main rooms (post-1500) but 1 star for the Sainsbury wing (pre-1500). The post-1500 is straightforward to navigate, although within each room you have to flip through thumbnails one at a time (up to two dozen) to find each particular painting in the room, as they are not in order. App needs updating as a few paintings in each room have been added or removed. For the pre-1500 rooms, the app is almost useless as the thumbnails, titles and artists for each painting differ from the actual works and the audio descriptions. This makes the search function useless. Audios sometimes have inaccurate details, including left and right being frequently transposed. A da Vinci is attributed to Michelangelo.

I bought this app to use on my iPhone. Since the text was very small and so was the image, I decided to open the app on my iPad. But now I’m being asked to pay again. Is that correct? Are there separate versions for iPhone and iPad? Thank you.

The original narratives were perfect, whatever would posses anyone to replace literally one of the most perfect audios in every way for a gallery with a poor imitation with an American accent? Why oh why?

This was the only audio guide I could find for the national gallery, so I pressed on past the terrible reviews - and was very glad I did! 

The audio was easy to search for via the numbers next to the paintings that all matched perfectly. I did pay £3.50 to upgrade to the full version to access all paintings, which I felt was a fair price.

The voice is clear, well paced and contains lots of interesting info that is not listed next to the painting. Some of it is from an automated text reader I think so the pronunciations are not perfect, but that did not take away from my enjoyment at all.

What fabulous potential: to explore these historical paintings up close while listening to interesting background information. In practice squandered by the high-school level of writing and the impossible-to-listen-to computer ‘reading’ of the same. You can imagine the developers telling the Gallery “... and better still, the computer can read everything for free; no need for voiceovers or editing...” A few years ago the BBC (I think) did a short radio series where experts discussed the paintings while were the audience examined them via a browser in high res detail. The perfect format... shame that the developer couldn’t learn from that and gets this app so badly wrong.

Wanted some info on Velázquez’s St John on Patmos, labelled 1093 with audioguide symbol in gallery, and paid for the full version of this rubbish app in order to find it.
Nothing. Total waste of money.
National Gallery: please outsource your app to a competent developer.
