## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Program is stuck on first lesson!!!!

*2025-05-22*

I have now taken the first test 5 times (passing each time) and the program is stuck: It won’t let me advance to next lesson. Supposedly your place in the course is saved - when I exit the program and come back, I end up right back at the first lesson. This program BLOWS!!!

**Developer response:** This was a bug where the app did not show the results but nothing was lost - the passed test was stored int he database online. The bug has been fixed.

### 1/5 — Dissatisfied with Skippering a small keelboat.

*2025-04-26*

Very difficult to use scanner for this NauticEd book. So disappointed. Headaches. Sad.
Wish you had just put the words on the page. How hard would that be?

**Developer response:** The book was written prior to QR codes were a big thing. Now you can just use your camera. Try again.

### 1/5 — Clearly not an important format

*2014-11-29*

Well clearly the iPad format isn't a primary path for their customers- this hasn't been updated in nearly - two years - the login screen doesn't work - comes up - hit OK - nothing - too bad, the content looks like it would've been great in this format

**Developer response:** We have just updated the app June 2024. Hope you now have a better experience.

### 1/5 — Bad illustrations

*2013-11-17*

The illustrations of the tests can not be seen

**Developer response:** We have just updated the app June 2024. Hope you now have a better experience.

### 1/5 — Not A Course

*2013-09-15*

This app indicated it was for beginners. I'm currently in a live ASA 101 course and wanted some additional interactive course material on trimming sails and all this App does is provide a 30 question quiz! Waste of money!

**Developer response:** Well, the App is free, so I don't think you wasted any money. However, everything is updated these days, and if you are talking about the Navigation Rules course, that is still free, and you can take the test anytime you like.

### 2/5 — Fix the phone app!

*2022-12-17*

How disappointing to have such great content ALMOST at your fingertips. References to diagrams that don’t exist and animations that are not accessible are more frustrating than if you couldn’t see that you are missing out on them.

**Developer response:** We have just updated the app June 2024. Hope you now have a better experience.

### 2/5 — Login options are not the same on mobile

*2018-03-28*

Please add the Janrain login capabilities to the mobile app! I log in via Google in a web browser, but that option is not available in mobile. This should be easy to fix. Without it, I can’t use the mobile app.

**Developer response:** We have just updated the app June 2024. Hope you now have a better experience. We also added FaceID

### 2/5 — Needs a major revision

*2018-02-20*

The content is great, but this app is showing its age. It needs a major UI update.

Icon could use an update too.

**Developer response:** We have just updated the app June 2024. Hope you now have a better experience.

### 2/5 — Great Idea

*2012-12-14*

The idea behind the software is great. I read the Bareboat Charter book, bought and read within iBooks. I installed this software, bought the Bareboat Charter Test and was unable to complete the test because the first test is buggy. No matter what answer you select, right or wrong, when you try to advance to the second questions it says you failed and restarts the test. The 2nd and 3rd test worked fine. Not sure if 40 something questions are really worth 29 dollars. That is after you payed for the book. The book was outstanding! The tests, not as much and since it is buggy I threw away my money.

**Developer response:** Everything is updated. Test work fine now.

### 3/5 — Comprehensive but buggy and typos

*2022-11-19*

Generally this is a really good source of learning about sailing. The typos and bugs in some of the interactive features are a bit distracting.

**Developer response:** We react immediately to each type when alerted. Feel free to send them to use. Thanks very much.

## Most praised reviews (7 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Bringing sailing into modern times with conscience and technology

*2026-05-12*

Started with the classes, then logging my sailing trips, brushing up on docking in the VR app, created amazing memories on the flotillas and now tracking miles on voyages with SailTies. The NauticEd system and network is slaying!

### 5/5 — If you’re a sailer, then you need this

*2022-03-30*

Hands down the best app for both new and old sailers looking to advance their knowledge out on the water. Even the two basic courses are worth doing alone.
An excellent app and courses that are clearly created by skippers knowledgable in their respective fields.

### 5/5 — Great App Great Way to Learn

*2022-03-04*

I’ve been sailing for years but wanted to get some certifications…. This app was phenomenal and I didn’t think I was going to get anything out of to be honest… The online learning has helped me develop so much and that’s even after taking all the ASA classes and sailing for a couple decades… great job great app!

### 5/5 — A great option to learn about sailing on mobile!

*2021-10-08*

I was pretty hesitant after reading some of the older reviews, but I’m glad that I took the chance to download the app and work through the material. It seems thorough, and it’s a pleasantly conversational style.

I’ve used the app on both iPadOS and iOS, it works well for both and is able to sync and download the course to both devices.

You are required to create an account to use the classes, I used the “create a ID using email” for my account. (It would be nice to be able to login with an AppleID as a option.)

On account creation I ran into an issue where my login name had a + (plus) symbol that was preventing login authentication in the app, and support responded within a couple hours to assist and provide a solution. (I was able to login just fine on the website, but the app doesn’t like + symbols.)

The only minor issue that I’ve run into on my iPhone is that some of the interactive components are slightly small initially. However, it is possible to “stretch” or zoom in on the interactive components. That makes it so much easier to use the interactive diagrams.

The two free lessons on navigation and basic sail trimming are free to keep if you complete them within 30 days of account creation. After completing the Basic Sail Trimming class I’m extremely glad that there were visual and interactive tutorials as learning aids.

Tests give you feedback. You can select the incorrect answer to better understand why it was wrong, and the tests allow you to pause and go back and review the lessons.

Overall, I can recommend the learning platform provided, the material is solid and I’m excited to work through the Skipper, Small Keelboat class on my journey into sailing!

### 5/5 — Bugs fixed

*2013-01-29*

The bugs noted in the previous versions were fixed with this latest release.

### 3/5 — Good content, poor app

*2019-02-23*

The Nauticed courses are nice and interesting. The app, however, is very badly done and painful to use on the phone.

**Developer response:** We have just updated the app June 2024. Hope you now have a better experience.

### 3/5 — Logbook issues

*2015-07-24*

Great for taking courses on the go. The main reason I downloaded it was to log trips on the water. Appears I can no longer do that. Every time I attempt to sync I receive and error "invalid vessel ID." I didn't even change the vessel id but used the repopulate do options!

**Developer response:** We have just updated the app June 2024. Hope you now have a better experience.
