### 3/5 — Good app but missing interests

*2026-06-28*

I like the app but I couldn’t add Battlestar Galactica as my interests since it wasn’t available

**Developer response:** Hi Friends,

I can add Battlestar to our list of potential interests to add! Were you thinking of the original version from the late 1970's or the reboot from the early 2000's?

Note that inside Nearpeer there is a link you can click to send any other suggestions directly to us. We are always adding new ones!

Thanks,
Maddie,

### 3/5 — Awesome but needs work

*2025-07-28*

The concept is great to meet friends on campus, but it’s not user friendly. I wish it was like instagram where it had a separate icon specifically for messages

### 4/5 — Missing Majors

*2025-07-01*

It is helpful, but I find that it doesn’t allow for all majors. My college has a theater major, but Nearpeer says that it isn’t a major. I know that Nearpeer doesn’t see theater as an academic subject, but if a student is using it for their specific college, they should list the college’s majors.

### 3/5 — It does what it says it does

*2024-08-17*

The app gets its job done, it’s just veeery glitchy and takes FOREVER to load. Also it’s been giving me 3 notification for 1 notification. Could be worse.

### 2/5 — Cool concept, poorly built

*2024-07-08*

This just isn't a very good app. I like the concept, and I think it has a lot of potential, but it's poorly built.

Some things that come to mind:
-Whenever I open a notification, the app is just a frozen white screen and I have to close it out, reopen it, and find whatever the notification was about on my own.
-If I open someone's profile, scroll through, then want to exit I have to go all the way to the top and hit the back arrow. Not a huge issue, just annoying, and most apps will let you swipe to go to the previous page.
-It would be nice if you could search for profiles based on high school and by specific interest (not just by "passion match").
-When you enter your pronouns, it says "not displayed on profile", but they are displayed. Again, not a huge issue, just not sure why it says that if it's not true/there's no way to change that.
-Under groups, if you toggle "sort by newest chat/sort by group name", it doesn't save that change.

Again, I like the concept of the app, I just think it could have been put together better.

**Developer response:** Hi ThereWNON, Thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback. We have fixed the misleading text and display of pronouns and we are working on the issues with notifications and sorting. These upgrades should be available soon.
Thanks, Maddie

### 3/5 — Really cool concept, just needs some improvements

*2024-05-15*

The app revolves around setting different interests on your profile, and then the app matches you to people with similar interests. This part is amazing, and really great at linking you with other individuals. The main issue, however, is the software of the app:

-Opening the app and loading the Home Screen can take about 10 seconds or so, which makes checking messages somewhat frustrating

-Opening the app after previously having it open occasionally causes it to not load at all, getting stuck on a white screen

-Notifications can be a nightmare, as they can endlessly pop up on a busy groupchat, yet it’s incredibly slow to open the app and check messages

I’d say if the app can be optimized in any way, this would significantly improve the user experience. Again, it’s a great concept, just needs improvement to avoid users resorting to Discord or Instagram to resume contact.

**Developer response:** Hi LucLop, Thanks for your detailed review! We appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback. Meanwhile, please check out our latest version released last week which includes some new features and improvements.

Thanks, Maddie

### 3/5 — Need some improvement

*2024-01-25*

The overall general concept of the app is great however their are some glitches when sending messages or trying to see notifications. Sometimes the app doesn’t load up. I’ve had to install and reinstall several times which is annoying.

**Developer response:** Hi ShayBray, Good news! The latest version of Nearpeer was released on Jan 27, 2024 - just a few days after your rating. We have completely re-designed our messaging system to eliminate lag and glitches. There are also improvements to notifications and all other areas of the tool. We encourage you to give it another try and let us know what you think! Thanks, Maddie helpdesk@nearpeer.net

### 2/5 — It’s alright

*2023-01-17*

This app needs a lot of work. Super sluggish and glitchy and kicks you out a lot. Very irritating but a super cool idea. With a few minor fixes and improvements this app could have a ton of potential!

**Developer response:** Hi BobboBoy15,

We've made a number of improvements to Nearpeer this year to improve its performance and reliability. Also, there are many new features. We invite you to give it another try and let us know what you think!

Thanks,

### 2/5 — Smart Concept, Many Bugs, Ideas for Feature Improvements

*2022-08-10*

The idea of Nearpeer is brilliant - often students at colleges will turn to outside apps such as Discord or GroupMe in order to form chat groups to meet people from their clubs, their classes, and so on. However, the actual execution is not so great. The app could be greatly improved by some bug fixes - for example, if I open it by tapping on a push notification the app opens as a blank screen and never loads to show what the push notification said (doesn’t open to the new chat in a group, does not open the the peer who followed me
as a notification said, etc.). It would also be smart to have the feature where students themselves could make groups for tutoring/classes and add their peers to the discussion without having to contact an administrator. The option to have polls within groups, to have a calendar with group-specific events, and for facilitators to upload pictures in the chat would be improvements as well. These would help improve the functionality of the app and provide more of an incentive for students to join.

**Developer response:** Hi JellyfishLeila,

Thank you so much for these great ideas! I have passed them on to our development team and I look forward to seeing these new features added in the future. The blank screen issue has already been fixed.

Thanks, Maddie - helpdesk@nearpeer.net

### 2/5 — Eh

*2021-09-16, version 2.4.2*

I thought that this app was great, the layout is very weird and complicated but other than that it was fine. Until i could never log in again, the log in button doesn’t do anything at all. You press it and nothing happens, it happens in the app and on the online version. I contacted them after i had already tried deleting and reinstalling the app which didn’t work. I emailed them back the same day and haven’t reviewed a response.

### 3/5 — love the app, but it’s super glitchy

*2021-02-18*

This app is extremely helpful for finding a roommate and suitemates. I 100% recommend this to anyone, especially if their college is organized with the groups.

My problem is that the app is very glitchy. At first it wouldn’t show me notifications when I would get messages (I had updated the notifications in settings to show me alerts, but that did not solve the problem), so I deleted the app and then re-downloaded it.

This seemed like a good idea, but it caused a more pressing problem. Now my keyboard is messed up along with the lack of notifications. When I’m chatting with someone, I can only see my keyboard, not the actual words that I’m typing. I can’t even type something on another app and paste it in the text because, again, the keyboard covers it up.

Nearpeer people, I love you, but please fix this problem!

**Developer response:** Hi bsimmons98,

Thanks for your kind words about Nearpeer. We've made a ton of changes in the last few years. This includes redesigning page layouts so the keyboard and all elements are visible. Please have another look and let us know if you have any more feedback. . Thanks, Maddie (helpdesk@nearpeer.net)

### 3/5 — Bugs

*2020-07-22, version 1.9.9*

I think it’s okay, but it’s got a lot of bugs.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Horrible interface

*2026-06-02*

Won’t let me sign into it after resetting password

**Developer response:** Hi Awesomecello,

I'm sorry you are having trouble. If you email me at helpdesk@nearpeer.net I can assist you and make sure you have full access again!

### 1/5 — Too Glitchy

*2024-08-19*

The concept of the app is great; but the app is entirely too glitchy. I was able to use it for about two days and now the app won't even load when I open it. Kinda disappointing because the app had potential.

### 1/5 — Buggiest App Ever

*2024-07-28*

It is a great concept but it has too many issues to be enjoyable. I constantly don’t receive notifications after enabling all possible options and I’m not the only one having these issues. Recently I was completely logged and locked out of my account with no messages back from technical support. It’s a very annoying and frustrating app to try and use.

### 1/5 — dont download this if u wanna get humbled

*2024-02-01*

u will never talk to the people irl and youll look like a goofball and you will regret using this trust me

**Developer response:** Hi Golyboy, I'm sorry you haven't had a good experience talking to your peers IRL. Thanks for your review. If you have more specific feedback or suggestions, please email me at the address below.
Thanks, Maddie

### 1/5 — Need To Add More Schools

*2023-06-10*

Hello there ! I am new to this app & wanting to try it out & I am trying to make an account & I can’t if it’s not available to choose from so can you please fix that thanks !

**Developer response:** Hi virgoxfaerie,

Unfortunately, Nearpeer is only available to students at selected universities at this time. We wish we could host all students at all schools! Please let your school know about us and recommend they support Nearpeer.

Thanks,
Maddie - helpdesk@nearpeer.net

### 1/5 — App freezes

*2021-11-05, version 2.4.5*

Click the icon and I get a white screen all the time. The app wont load

### 1/5 — Terrible Bugs

*2021-10-23, version 2.4.5*

Please fix the bug that is preventing people from changing their profile picture

### 1/5 — Horribly functioned app

*2020-10-09*

To be quiet honest, the idea is right but it’s executed horribly. For one, the layout is horrendous and awkward to navigate. While you do have access to the possibility of meeting new people, hence it’s premise, the app itself makes it quiet difficult.
Whenever I try to navigate, I constantly have to awkwardly maneuver through the interface. It seems like it was meant to be a website, but it instead was forced into a mobile app. Quiet frankly, it seems like the software engineers don’t care about this app at all.
Additionally, I never get notifications from this app. I used to get texts and emails at first, but that doesn’t even happen anymore. Whenever someone texts me or someone in a group chat texts me, no notification pops up. Others have complained about this.
Likewise, it feels as if no thought was really put into the app. Everything is kind of crammed into a mobile app horribly, and it results in a horrible aftermath while trying to reach out to other incoming students.
Therefore, I don’t recommend this app, but if you want to try to connect with incoming freshman or others in your college/uni, then I guess you can try. However, be aware that you will have many difficulties while doing so. I have seen others give 5 stars, but I can’t relate. Tinder is better at connecting with local uni students than this app and that should say something.

**Developer response:** Dear Poseidon, we're sorry to hear about your experience. All of us are here to serve students, and we're grateful to do so with the input of students in designing the app. If you'd like your feedback to help serve other students, please reach out to us at info@nearpeer.net. Thank you

### 1/5 — Could never make my account

*2020-05-16, version 1.9.6*

Looks like a great app! But wouldn’t let me make my account so, never knew what it was like to use it🤷🏽‍♂️

### 1/5 — :(

*2020-04-30, version 1.9.5*

This app is so bad!! It makes me so sad because it’s such a great idea, but it will refuses to let me type, or search, and every single time I close the app, I lose where I was and what I was doing. Very disappointed :(

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Met all my friends at CSUN on Nearpeer

*2025-08-28*

This app is fantastic - my school, Cal State Northridge, has Nearpeer for all the new students. It’s really cool how I can see and connect with other people who share my interests and hobbies. If your school has it, definitely use it, it is awesome.

### 5/5 — Social bridge to college

*2025-06-26*

Transitioning from a community college to a full university is super scary but I feel like I have a better grasp of the social aspect because of near peer. I was able to connect with people with shared interests or groups with me which was super nice! I really appreciate how it has a separate group chat with transfer students a lot of the time it feels like there isn’t a lot of social spaces or opportunities for transfer students but its nice to have one here. I think near peer can benefit by adding more specific group chats per major. So a college of education chat or a college of business chat so that people can connect with others that share similar majors or career paths! Overall I think near peer is going to help me socially transition to my university!

### 5/5 — Great app!!

*2024-04-18*

Love how easy it is to make friends!

**Developer response:** Hi ToughSolver, Thanks for your review! We're glad to know you are making friends!
Thanks, Maddie

### 5/5 — Great app

*2023-10-04*

It’s super helpful for freshman, transfer students, commuters, and more. I see a lot of students use apps like Instagram to meet other students, but it’s much easier with Nearpeer. It allows you to connect with people specifically in your school using similar interests. These interests range from your field of study to your favorite actor, so there’s lots of opportunity to connect and start a conversation.

### 5/5 — Great App!

*2023-02-21*

I absolutely love Nearpeer! It’s a great and safe place to meet new friends. I recommend everybody download this app ASAP!

**Developer response:** Hi Alex,
Thanks for your recommendation! We're glad you're enjoying using Nearpeer!

### 5/5 — Great!

*2021-05-01, version 2.2.1*

What a great app! Students able to build friendships before campus making the transition to college so much easier.

### 5/5 — good for out of state students like me

*2020-05-22, version 1.9.9*

As an out of state student, I didn't know anyone in my college class at first. And now my summer orientation is not happening on campus. So I was happy to get this app to help me find other students who live near me and are into sports and other things I like.

### 5/5 — I need this app

*2020-05-15, version 1.9.6*

As a new student I signed up and right away started seeing matches with other students who have things in common with me. I like it!

### 5/5 — good for students

*2020-05-14, version 1.9.6*

New to college so its great with this app to meet other new students in the same boat as me. pretty simple to figure out.

### 5/5 — Easy to meet others

*2020-05-13, version 1.9.6*

Works great for me. I’m kinda introverted until you get to know me. So I like being able to find individual people to connect rather than only a big chat group.
