Look forward to future updates but a brilliant start. ### 5/5 — My New Favorite midi sequencer! *2024-03-31* To be honest, I didn’t need anymore midi sequencers… but I watched a couple demo videos by the developer and was intrigued. This one is really fun with an exciting, colorful interface. It’s generative results are easy to set up and control. It also runs well on macOS M1 as standalone and within Logic Pro. Such a fun midi sequencer and highly recommended! :) ### 5/5 — Amazing Sequencer *2024-03-31, version 1.0* I have tried most if not all IOS sequencer and hands down this is I believe one of the very best. Very clever put together sequencer with a ton of generative options. Don’t be put off by just the 8 steps this thing with the right settings can make your bests fly. A steal at the price. I wish the dev success in his first app venture and hope he comes back for more. ### 5/5 — Quick results and lots of sequencing fun *2024-03-31, version 1.0* Neon is one of those apps to explore: Create a sequence, play with the modifiers and meta sequencing, and you quickly get something Berlin School style rolling. I love the crazy colors and the option to let each Neon instance have a different color. I wish the developer a Happy Easter and success with this app. ### 5/5 — Don’t pay attention to the negative review. *2024-03-31* Clearly it’s written by someone that’s never used a midi sequencer or can’t manage to troubleshoot or reach out for help. This is a fantastic app. Intuitive and powerful, fun and engaging, and unique in approach. And at this price? Excellent. ### 5/5 — New approach to sequencing *2024-03-31, version 1.0* A new way of creating midi sequences. Very well thought out, a good set of parameters to manipulate a sequence and an interesting interface. If I had one suggestion it would be to include a white on black theme... ### 5/5 — Incredible tool…1 star review is completely wrong *2024-03-31* This works the way I’ve always wanted a step sequencer to work. By making each modifier like pitch, velocity, octave, pitch offset, cc, etc. able to move at its own user-defined pace (each step for each modifier can be short or long depending on the number of pulses or notes it’s supposed to take before moving on), you can make incredibly interesting and evolving sequences. This is a truly modular approach to sequencing. Set your pitch steps as a 5 step sequence with each step having its own duration, then add a octave modifier that runs at only 3 steps (therefore the octaves are constantly affecting different notes as the sequence runs), while having another modifier that affects velocity running at 8 steps to see how much your 5 note sequence will evolve. And that’s just a very basic example. And it has a song mode so you can chain patterns for true composing…not just 8 step sequences, though this app would be incredible even if there were only 8 steps total. Mindblowing! This is the power of a modular approach to step sequencing and is really unique on iOS. Only Quantum Sequencer has a similar approach but it is not AUv3 (incredible app though). Just get it, play with different rates, durations, and lengths for every modifier, and you’ll be happy. Tangerine Dream would have killed for this. Kudos to the developer for having such a clear, creative vision, and powerful execution. Also, I have no idea what that short 1 star review is about. The guy obviously did something wrong…the Audiobus form posts are consistently raving about this app. Just buy it. I’ve wanted this kind of sequencer for forever. Really unique…the developer clearly understands the power of modular sequencing and probably is a real modular synth nerd. Big ups! ### 5/5 — Awesomeness in a box! *2024-03-30* Thank you Aaron Meyers for this brilliant bit of kit! The combinations of root scale octave order division and reset count are a fast and furious way to load up banging sequences in AUM. Beautiful compliment to other sequencers while truly it’s own thing. Extremely valuable! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Troubles *2024-04-21, version 1.0.8* Complete silence when inserted as a MIDI Processor into AUM, while all other sequencers connect flawlessly to synths as MIDI outputs. Baffling. ### 2/5 — Still losing sync *2024-05-17* After putting neon through its paces when it debuted. Realized it looses sync in logic, Cubasis and beatmaker3. Requested app refund , denied. App has been updated since , but still acts up, very frustrating. Quality control is horrible with apps. But the app is still dope. **Developer response:** hey fgjyfdf, I do most of my testing in AUM and Loopy Pro where I've never had any problems with sync. This week I did some testing in Logic Pro and found some glitchy behaviors. I've re-worked some of the transport handling and now it's working great in Logic Pro. Without any additional information, I can't really tell what might be causing problems for you, but I recommend you try updating to version 1.0.1, which I released today to see if it solves it for you. If you are still having issues with sync, I recommend leaving a bug report at https://neon.canny.io with more details including what host you are running the auv3 in and even a video if possible so I can get to the bottom of it. Thanks, -A ### 3/5 — Almost perfect *2024-03-30* I love the configuration capabilities of this app. I have discovered two issues with it within LogicPro. 1. Sometimes it stops working then it dumps a lot of midi then plays fine. 2. Saving presets within the LogicPro browser doesn’t allow to delete or rename presets. I do like what this app is generating. Looking forward to your next update. **Developer response:** hi petemuzak, on point 1, there is a known transport-related bug that may have something to do with this and i’m hoping to resolve it asap. it would be super helpful if you could post a video to neon.canny.io and any steps that can help me reproduce it myself Update (4/4/24): I spent some time testing Neon in Logic Pro for iPad and I believe I resolved all the issues in version 1.0.1, released on the App Store yesterday. Please give it a try! on point 2, because neon presets contain more data than the contents of the auparameter tree, i made my own preset file format and cannot support saving presets in a host’s browser. if you use neon’s preset panel, you can delete presets by swiping to the left on a preset name and you can also export them to a .neonpreset file by swiping to the right. .neonpreset files that you drop in the neon folder in the files app will be imported when the app starts up. -a ### 4/5 — Powerful, quirky sequencer *2024-04-06, version 1.0.2* Really good sequencer, this one - the ratcheting, pauses and held notes give it a real edge against the piles of other MIDI sequencer apps out there (and I’ve got most of them!). One star off for a couple of things I’d like to see added: randomiser functionality, and some factory presets (there aren’t any!). Both of these things would provide a starting point, rather than having to start from scratch. I’m also in the ‘not a fan’ camp for the quirky interface - yes it’s fun, but really difficult to accurately dial in settings on the fly. But still a great app, and 5 stars if updates address the things I’ve listed above. ### 5/5 — Works beautifully *2025-07-14* I previously left a critical review because holds resulted in stuck notes on mono synths. The most recent version fixed the bug and it now works like a charm! **Developer response:** hey there, thanks for pointing this out. i’ve just released an update (1.0.10) that fixes this. hold stages that are followed by the same note are meant to be treated as ties so the correct behavior is only one note on message and one note off message in the scenario that you described. the auv3 version already behaved this way, but somehow it didn’t make it into the standalone. the behavior is now consistent between the two. ### 5/5 — Brilliant *2024-12-20, version 1.0.8* For quickly getting ideas down, this is brilliant. It’s really easy to get basic bassline or rhythmic pattern going. The one thing I would request from the developer would be to add a “extra note” modifier, so we could write chords in to one sequencer. Currently I do this by running two or more instances but it would be super handy to be able to do it all in one instance. This doesn’t take away from Neon at all, as I’ve not found a sequencer which does this properly yet. (Dev, tell me if im being stupid and have missed something). Other awesome things Neon allows you to do is run various off timed modifiers over your playing pattern so you can create variations on the fly. These can be perfectly in time and musically regular in your tune or you can set it to phase in and out of time with your track to give a “polyrhythm” effect. Honestly brilliant and your imagination is the only limitation with this plugin. I absolutely love it. Also, you can save your presets so you can easily just load them up in other projects as needed. 5 star app, no doubt. ### 5/5 — So fun to work with!!! There aren’t many AUv3 sequencers that I haven’t tried, but this one went right to the top of my list. ### 5/5 — wow! *2024-04-25* Just caught a Jakob Haq video on this and thought I’d check it out. Totally blown away and I’ve only been playing with it for 10 minutes. Pretty easy to pick up and understand. Incredible to have a MIDI sequencer like this on my iPad mini to be able to noodle around with ideas absolutely anywhere. Excellent work, worth every penny and then some! ### 5/5 — My new favorite step sequencer *2024-04-13* I’ve tried a fair amount of midi step sequencers since I started making music on iOS/iPadOS and this one is my favorite so far. The interface is perfect for a touch screen - I can’t imagine using a mouse for this. It’s really quick to get around and easy to understand. The developer has been very responsive and involved, which is really appreciated.
