## What is NeoShoDo?

NeoShoDo helps you practice handwriting one stroke at a time.

Trace real print and cursive letterforms over dashed stroke-order guides. Watch a quick demo of how each letter is written, then trace it yourself — NeoShoDo scores every stroke on shape and direction, so you learn correct letter formation, not just the shape.

Best with a stylus. A finger can trace a shape, but grip and pen control only come from holding something — and those are what carry over to writing on paper. An Apple Pencil on iPad comes closest to pen on paper. A finger works fine, and nothing here is locked behind hardware.

• Print and cursive letters, plus numbers 0–9
• Watch-then-trace: a guided demo shows the stroke order, with numbered start and end points and an animated hint line
• Master each letter with a five-in-a-row drill before moving on
• Free practice: trace whole words and famous sentences on ruled paper
• Choose your paper (three-line, two-line, four-line, slant, single) and a handwriting font for free practice
• Full Apple Pencil support with Apple's native tools — pen, pencil, marker, crayon, colors, and an eraser
• Light, dark, and automatic themes
• Your progress syncs across your devices when you sign in

Try it free with no account, then sign in with Apple or Google to save your progress. Practice penmanship, one stroke at a time.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.1 — 2026-08-29

Sepia: a fourth theme alongside Auto, Light and Dark — a warmer, aged-paper tone for practising in low light. The practice paper itself stays white in every theme.

Grid: square graph paper joins the practice-paper styles, with the writing line aligned to the grid.

Settings now uses the app's own colours rather than the system's grey, in every theme.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-08-21

A new look. NeoShoDo now wears its own mark — a calligraphic NSD monogram — and the
whole app is dressed to match it: ink and gold on cream paper, taken from the artwork
itself rather than a generic theme. The practice screens follow it too, so the app you
open matches the icon you tapped.

Everything you practise with is unchanged: the same letterforms, the same stroke order
and scoring, and the same script packs.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-18

A pen makes a difference, and now the app says so.

NeoShoDo will tell you once, while you're practising, that a stylus helps — because a finger can trace a shape, but grip and pen control only come from holding something, and those are what carry over to writing on paper. It works perfectly well with a finger; the advice is there because this is a penmanship app and it ought to say it. You'll also find it any time under Settings.

Also in this release: small fixes to the script picker and the worksheets.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-15

Pick your script first — then practise it.

Choosing which alphabet you're practising is now the first thing on the screen, not a font setting buried further down. Tap it and every script opens in place to show the styles you can write it in, so choosing Korean and choosing whether to write it in Myeongjo or Gothic is one step.

Every script pack now has its own words and sentences. Chinese, Korean, Cyrillic and Arabic join Japanese: real words with their reading and meaning, and sentences drawn from each language's own writers and history — classical Chinese poetry, the Korean 훈민정음, Russian literature, Arabic verse — each one checked against a named source rather than a quote website.

New: vertical Japanese and Chinese (縦書き). Sentences can be written the traditional way, top to bottom and right to left on squared practice paper, with punctuation placed the way vertical writing places it. It's an option, not a replacement, and it's marked BETA while a native writer reviews it.

Also in this release: Arabic dots are drawn as the pen's rhombus rather than as circles, which is how they're actually written; pinch to zoom and drag with two fingers on any worksheet; and bigger, clearer characters on iPad.

### 1.1.1 — 2026-08-14

Arabic dots are now drawn the way they are actually written.

An Arabic dot — a nuqta — is the footprint of the pen's nib: you set the qalam down, press until the cut edge opens, and pull it a short distance. That leaves a small rhombus. NeoShoDo was drawing dots as circles, which the tracing guide painted as rings with a hole in the middle, and asked you to trace as a tiny loop. Nobody writes a dot that way.

Each dot is now a single short pull, and the pen shapes it into the rhombus itself. The dots are also the right size and spacing relative to the letters, checked against classical Naskh proportions — the nuqta is the unit the whole script is measured by.

Also: a dot dabbed rather than pulled is no longer marked wrong for its direction.
