## What is NestEgg?

Most retirement calculators ask for three numbers and hand you a year. That's not a plan, that's a guess.

NestEgg is a retirement planner and early retirement calculator that models the mechanics actually deciding whether you make it: your real return after inflation, the tax treatment of every account you draw from, and how much Social Security at 62 versus 70 changes the number you need.

WHAT'S IN IT

Your FIRE number, five ways — Traditional, Lean, Coast, Barista and Fat. Financial independence means something different at $40k a year than at $150k, and the app doesn't pretend otherwise.

Your retirement age, not just your number. A year-by-year projection to age 95 in today's dollars, with your target drawn on the chart, the crossing year marked, and a depletion warning if the money runs out first.

Withdrawal strategies. Fixed inflation-adjusted spending, percent-of-portfolio, or guardrails that trim 10% after bad stretches and take a raise after good ones.

Income that isn't your portfolio. Social Security at any claim age, pensions, rental income, part-time work. Coast FIRE math falls apart if you skip this.

Tax drag. Traditional, Roth and taxable modelled separately, with long-term capital gains treatment, RMDs, Roth conversion ladders and an early-retirement healthcare (ACA) bridge. Built on current IRS and SSA figures — brackets, standard deduction, 401(k) and Roth IRA limits, the wage base — updated each year.

Scenario comparison. Save as many what-ifs as you like and put them next to each other. "What if we moved somewhere cheaper" is a real question with a real answer.

Plan with a partner. Two incomes, two retirement ages, one shared date.

YOUR DATA

No ads, ever, and your figures are never sold or shared. Start with no sign-up at all — explore as a guest and attach an account later only if you want your plan to sync across your devices. You can delete your account and everything in it from Settings, instantly.

WHAT IT DOESN'T DO

It doesn't connect to your bank or track your spending. It's not a budgeting app and there are good ones already. NestEgg answers one question: when can you stop working, and what has to be true for that to hold.

It doesn't run Monte Carlo simulations. Projections use a steady real return you pick — conservative, balanced or optimistic — so you can see the mechanics rather than a probability you can't interrogate.

It's also not financial advice. It's a model, and every model is wrong about something. Use it to think, not to decide.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.0 — 2026-09-03

Editing an expense no longer commits as you type. Tapping + opens an empty line item and nothing joins your plan until you press Save, so backing out of one leaves nothing behind. Save and Remove stay pinned to the bottom of the sheet however long the form gets, and the category you added the item under is the category it keeps — it no longer re-files itself while you type the name.

Categories are yours to manage. Name one when you add it instead of living with "New category", rename any of them, and delete a custom one. If it still holds spending you choose what happens to it: move those items to Other and keep the money in your plan, or delete them along with the category.

Every sheet in the app is solid now rather than translucent, and you can drag one down to dismiss it. Keep swiping past the top of a long form and it closes. The keyboard no longer pushes a tall sheet off the top of the screen, so the field you're filling in and the button that saves it both stay where you can reach them.

An hourly rate keeps its cents. $28.75 an hour stays $28.75 instead of rounding to $29 and quietly changing the salary it derives.

Fixes: the household split no longer counts a once-a-year bonus toward your monthly take-home — that figure now matches the one Income & Taxes shows for the same paycheck — and its comparison bars give each person's share as a percentage as well as an amount. The FIRE year is one number everywhere: Today, the milestone timeline, the Plan tab, Retirement and Projections all read the year your assets actually reach your number, instead of some of them reading the date you've planned to stop working.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-09-02

The FIRE year on Today's milestone timeline now agrees with the Projections tab. It had been showing your retirement date under a FIRE label — the year you plan to stop, not the year the money is actually enough. Those are the same year only when a plan lands exactly on its number the day you stop earning, and most don't.

Projections is one screen now. Drag across any of the three charts to move the year inspector underneath it — there's no full-screen chart to open any more. Net worth stacks by account so the bands add up to the total; growth draws contributions, investment growth, withdrawals, expenses and Social Security as five separate lines, with the year you reach your number and the year the drawing starts both marked.

Each chart carries the dial that moves it: retirement spend on net worth, withdrawal rate on growth, appreciation on property, each with a reset back to where you started. There's a simulated retirement age too — move when the withdrawals begin and watch the whole projection re-run, without touching your saved plan.

Properties have their own screens now. Tap one instead of unfolding a drawer: what it's worth, how fast it appreciates, the equity in it, whether there's still a mortgage on it — and, new in this release, whether you rent it out. Set the rent, the running costs, a vacancy share and how fast rent grows, and the net income joins the growth chart as its own line. It climbs in real terms while rent rises against a fixed mortgage payment, and steps up again the year that loan is paid off. If you don't know what a let costs to run, there's an estimate to start from.

Fixes: retirement spending is now inflated from today rather than from your retirement date, so a retired year's expenses match the figures in your expense breakdown and the draws covering them are sized correctly. Sliders and charts no longer capture a scroll that starts on top of them. Social Security now gets its cost-of-living adjustment, so it holds its value in today's dollars instead of shrinking year after year, and the funding-shortfall setting you choose actually reaches the projection.

### 1.2.0 — 2026-08-30

Every percentage in the app is now a slider you can drag, with tick marks for each step and a plus and minus that jump between them. Ranges are sized to real answers instead of what a field could technically hold, so the numbers you actually use are no longer squeezed into the first inch of the track. Need a value outside the range? Tap the percentage and type it.

The Today tab shows its work. A ring for how far along you are, a chart of the path to your number, and bars for where each month's take-home goes and how your assets are split — instead of a wall of figures to compare in your head.

Emoji are gone. Every icon in the app is now one we drew, in one weight and one palette, so a FIRE style and a milestone finally look like they come from the same app.

Fixes: the on-track badge is green again rather than blending into the accent, and the keyboard has a proper dismiss button.

### 1.1.0 — 2026-08-11

FIRE Path is now NestEgg — same app, same plan, new name.

Setup is faster. It is a handful of taps instead of a form now: pick the range that sounds like you and NestEgg builds the plan, then shows your FIRE number and the year you could stop working.

Assumptions are free for everyone. Real return, inflation, safe withdrawal rate and state tax are no longer part of the paid version. Every number on your dashboard is computed through them, so you should be able to disagree with them.

Your employer 401(k) match counts now. Setup asks whether you get one, and the dashboard reflects it instead of assuming you contribute nothing.

Also in this release: the setup summary and the Today tab agree on every figure, the contribution-gap breakdown adds up and names the year it is measured against, and a priority action that used to open an empty screen now opens the bridge planner.
