A scanner and generator for QR codes and barcodes that doesn't stop at the raw value. Scan tells you what's actually inside each code — Wi-Fi credentials, contacts, calendar events, payment slips, crypto wallets, identity flows, product barcodes — and offers the right next action. Every field is tap-to-copy. WHAT IT READS Live from the camera or imported from Photos, Files, or PDFs: QR, Aztec, Data Matrix, PDF417, Code 128, Code 39, EAN-8 / 13, UPC-A / E, ITF-14, Codabar, GS1 DataBar. When more than one code sits in the same frame, Scan numbers them on screen so you can pick the one you want. Pinch to zoom in on far-away or small codes; centred-frame scanning ignores stray codes at the edge of the view. WHAT IT UNDERSTANDS - Wi-Fi — including WPA3 SAE and Hotspot 2.0 / Passpoint. Connect with one tap. - Contacts — vCard 3.0 / 4.0 and MECARD via the system "New Contact" sheet. - Calendar — iCalendar VEVENTs via the system event editor. - URLs — open in Safari, with smart routing for WhatsApp, Telegram, App Store, Apple Music, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Wallet. - Locations — geo: URIs and Apple / Google Maps URLs. - OTP authenticator setup (otpauth://). - Payment QRs — EPC SEPA (GiroCode), Swiss QR-bill, Indian UPI, Serbian NBS IPS, Czech SPD, Slovak Pay by Square, German Bezahlcode, EMVCo Merchant (Pix, PayNow, NETS, PromptPay, CoDi, FPS, DuitNow, QRIS, NAPAS), Swish, Vipps, MobilePay, Bizum, iDEAL. - Crypto — Bitcoin, Ethereum (with EIP-681 transfers), Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, Monero, Cardano, Solana, XRP, Stellar, Cosmos, Lightning. ACROSS YOUR DEVICES Scan runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac (via Mac Catalyst), and Apple Vision Pro. Your scan history syncs across all of them via your own private iCloud database — scan a Wi-Fi QR on your phone, copy the password from your Mac an hour later. On Apple Vision Pro the live camera is unavailable by design: Apple does not expose Vision Pro's world cameras to third-party apps. The Scan tab there opens directly to "Choose from Photos / Choose from Files"; Generate and History work as on any other destination. SHARE TO SCAN Scan installs a system Share extension. Tap the Share button on an image or PDF in any app — Mail, Messages, Files, Safari, Photos — and choose Scan. The decoded result appears inline. PRIVACY Scan is built to leave no trace. - No accounts, no sign-in, no e-mail to register. - No analytics SDKs, no advertising frameworks, no third-party trackers. - Camera frames are decoded entirely on-device by Apple's AVFoundation and Vision frameworks. Nothing is recorded or transmitted. - Imported photos and PDFs are decoded on-device. - The only network connections are the ones you explicitly start — opening a URL in Safari, launching a UPI app, and so on. Scan history is stored locally and, when iCloud is enabled for Scan in Settings, mirrored to your own private iCloud database via Apple's CloudKit. We have no access to it. PERMISSIONS - Camera — frames decoded on-device only. - Photo Library (Add Only) — for saving generated codes. - Contacts — only when you tap "Add to Contacts". - Calendars (Write Only on iOS 17+) — only when you tap "Add to Calendar". Scan is open source. ## Version history (last 4 releases) ### 1.9 — 2026-06-12 Scan 1.9 — more codes, smarter "Open in …". NEW CODE TYPES • WalletConnect pairing QRs — see the session details and hand off to your wallet. • Nostr — npub/note/nevent/naddr links and nostr: URIs. Secret keys (nsec) are flagged with a warning, never opened. • Google Authenticator exports — see which accounts a 2FA transfer QR contains. The secrets themselves are never displayed. • Plus Codes (Open Location Codes) — open the spot straight in Maps. • what3words addresses — ///filled.count.soap style codes open the location. • IBANs — validated with the real checksum and grouped for easy reading. • Branded payment and messaging handles: PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, Revolut, TWINT, Alipay, WeChat Pay — plus Signal, Matrix, and Zoom/Teams/Meet meeting links. SMARTER "OPEN IN …" • Open in Wallet / torrent client / Swish / Vipps / MobilePay / Bizum / iDEAL no longer does nothing when no matching app is installed — you now get the option to search the App Store or copy the link. • Bare crypto addresses (bc1q…, 0x…, lnbc…) now reach your wallet correctly. • Open in UPI app lets you choose Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or another UPI app — instead of always jumping to WhatsApp. ### 1.8 — 2026-05-04 A lot has changed since 1.1 — Mac and Apple Vision Pro support, an iCloud-synced library, system Share Sheet integration, PDF decoding, a richer generator, and several new payload categories. MAC AND APPLE VISION PRO Scan now runs natively on Mac (via Mac Catalyst, macOS 14 or later) and on Apple Vision Pro (via Designed for iPad), in addition to iPhone and iPad. On Mac, the live scanner uses your Mac's built-in webcam or any connected Continuity Camera. macOS prompts for camera permission the first time you open the Scan tab. On Apple Vision Pro, Apple does not expose the world cameras to third-party apps, so the live-scanner path is unavailable by design. The Scan tab opens directly to "Choose from Photos / Choose from Files" — pick a screenshot, photo, or PDF and Scan decodes it on-device. The Generate tab is fully functional and your iCloud-synced History follows you in. ICLOUD-SYNCED LIBRARY ACROSS EVERY DEVICE The scan history now syncs across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Vision Pro via your own private iCloud database. SHARE TO SCAN AND PDF SUPPORT Tap the iOS Share button on an image or PDF in any app — Mail, Messages, Files, Safari, Photos — and choose Scan. The decoded result appears inline without leaving the source app. PDFs are decoded page-by-page in both the share sheet and the Files importer. MULTI-CODE DISAMBIGUATION When more than one code sits in the same frame, Scan numbers them on screen so you can pick the one you actually want. NEW PAYLOAD TYPES Wi-Fi gained WPA3 SAE and Hotspot 2.0 / Passpoint indication. Stablecoin tokens (USDC, USDT, DAI on Ethereum; USDT, USDC on Tron and Solana) are recognised with symbol and chain. Tron is now a first-class chain. DigiD, EUDI Wallet, and OpenID4VC identity links are detected and routed with an explicit "only continue if you started this login yourself" reminder. Any product code can be saved as a loyalty card with a merchant tag. GENERATOR Pick foreground and background colours with WCAG contrast feedback, choose error-correction level (L / M / Q / H), and embed a centred logo. Export as PNG, SVG, or PDF, in addition to Save to Photos, Share, or Copy. SETTINGS TAB AND HISTORY UPGRADES A new Settings tab gathers haptic-on-scan, sound-on-scan, and continuous-scan toggles. The live preview no longer freezes after a successful scan. Tap the star to favourite a History entry. Export visible or all history as CSV. The corner reticle tracks the recognised code and releases back to centre when no codes are in view. PRIVACY UNCHANGED No accounts, no sign-in, no analytics, no third-party SDKs. The only network connections are the ones you explicitly start. ### 1.1 — 2026-05-01 This update broadens what Scan can read and refines the Generate tab. New payload types Magnet links — view the info hash, file name, size, and trackers, then hand off to your torrent client. Smarter web links — when a code contains multiple URLs, Scan offers the right action instead of a generic "Open in Safari". Map URLs are recognised as locations and open directly in Maps. vCard 4.0 contacts are now parsed alongside vCard 3.0. More crypto chains: XRP, Stellar, Cosmos, LNURL, and Lightning Address. Bare addresses without a scheme are recognised too — Bitcoin (legacy and bech32), Ethereum, XRP, Stellar, Cosmos, BOLT11 invoices, and LNURL. Industry barcodes GS1 Application Identifiers — the barcodes on retail and logistics labels. Three encodings are supported: parenthesised, GS1 Digital Link URLs, and FNC1-separated. Around 40 common AIs are decoded with friendly names, dates render as YYYY-MM-DD, and a GTIN web lookup is included. IATA boarding passes (BCBP) — scan the barcode on your pass to see passenger name, PNR, route, carrier, flight number, date, cabin, seat, sequence number, and status. Multi-leg passes report the leg count. AAMVA driver's licences (PDF417) — every U.S. state and D.C., and every Canadian province. Extracts name, licence number, date of birth, expiry, issue date, sex, and address, and labels the issuing jurisdiction. Generate tab Tap outside a field to dismiss the keyboard, or drag down on the form to swipe it away. A Done button now appears above the keyboard while you're editing. App icon The icon has been refreshed: the QR motif is larger and the corner brackets have been removed, so Scan reads clearly as a scanner in the Dock and in Spotlight. Under the hood 38 new parser tests (90 in total). Two existing tests that had silently been excluded from the suite are running again. The privacy policy is now hosted at a stable address. As always, no account, no analytics, no trackers. Everything runs on your device.
