## What is Neural Initiative?

Neural Initiative is a persistent AI Game Master for fifth-edition and other tabletop RPGs. Start a campaign in minutes and play whenever you want, on your own or with friends. The AI narrates the world, runs the NPCs, calls for real dice, and remembers everything you do, so the story keeps its shape across months. And now it illustrates that story as you play.

DICE THAT ACTUALLY DECIDE
Rolls are real and they stick. When the AI calls for a check, the dice are rolled for real and the result drives what happens next. A natural 1 can wreck a plan and a natural 20 can save the day, because the number lands before the story does. The AI does not quietly bend the outcome to a tidier scene. Your luck is your luck.

A STORY THAT COMMITS
Neural Initiative plays a campaign with a spine, not a string of disconnected scenes. The world remembers what you did, NPCs hold their grudges and their debts, and the arc you are on keeps moving toward its payoff. Choices have weight because the game carries them forward instead of resetting between sessions.

A WORLD YOU CAN SEE
Most AI adventures are a wall of text. Neural Initiative illustrates the story as it turns. Every beat can render its own scene in a premium fantasy-rulebook art style, and the backdrop behind the tale is alive: taverns, forests, crypts, the open sea, a burning forge, the feywild, and more, with weather, time of day, and the tension of a fight all reflected on screen.

A PARTY WITH A FACE
Every character and key NPC gets a unique AI portrait built from their sheet, so your rogue, your paladin, and the innkeeper who owes them a favor all look like themselves. Portraits carry across your campaigns and double as your avatar.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
- See your world. Each scene is illustrated as the story turns, over living, animated atmosphere.
- Meet your party. Every hero and key NPC gets a one-of-a-kind AI portrait.
- Play anytime. No table to schedule, no human GM to wait on. Pick up a session whenever the mood strikes.
- Solo or multiplayer. Run a private one-player story, or invite friends into the same live session.
- Bring a real book. Import a published adventure you legally own and the AI runs the actual material, chapter by chapter.
- Build characters. Create a character on your phone or pull one from your roster, and edit the sheet as you play.
- Roll real dice. A full 3D dice roller for the moments that matter.
- Hear the story. Optional voice narration reads scenes aloud.
- Persistent campaigns. Your world, characters, and story carry over between sessions and stay in sync across devices.

HOW IT WORKS
Neural Initiative is the companion to a hosted service at neuralinitiative.ai. Create an account, start a campaign, and play. The same campaigns are on the web, so you can set things up on a big screen and play on your phone. Sign in with Apple, email, or your other connected accounts. Your data is encrypted in transit and your account is yours to delete at any time.

OPEN ENGINE
The engine behind Neural Initiative is open source, so if you would rather run it yourself on your own keys, that path stays open.

Gather your party and roll initiative.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.9 — 2026-09-08

Monster picker in combat. Add a creature to a fight by choosing it from the SRD list instead of typing its stat block out by hand. Initiative and the combatant count update with it.

Conditions, and the ability to clear them. A GM can set or clear a condition on any combatant from the phone, and break concentration, rather than living with whatever is stuck on.

Handouts. Show the table a letter, a map or a note without leaving the play screen.

Marching order. Set who stands where before a fight starts. Positioning is a per-campaign setting now, and the selector tells you when it is switched off.

Campaign share links on mobile. The share control is on the phone too, so you can bring someone into a campaign without opening a laptop.

Nudge. A nudge button sits beside the skip controls, for when the table needs moving along.

Narrate your own table from the phone. A human GM can run and narrate a campaign from mobile, not only from the web.

Skip a player who is not coming back. The GM can move the table on without waiting on someone who has vanished mid-session.

Tap a weapon to roll it. Weapons on the character sheet are tappable and roll straight from the sheet.

Arabic right-to-left layout. The app lays out right-to-left throughout in Arabic.

Fixed: levelling up on iPhone. Players who reached a new level and could not take it from the phone now can.

Fixed: the party strip on tablets. Collapsing is decided by the room actually available rather than by which device you are on.

Fixed: the play screen header. The screen measures where the top chrome really ends instead of assuming a fixed height, which straightens the layout on several devices.

Fixed: two prompts that never appeared. Both were gated on a value that was always empty, so they could not show at all.

Fixed: a sentence in the positioning band that read "Currently In contact." mid-sentence.

Fixed: trial credit on the home screen is now only promised to accounts that will actually receive it.

### 1.0.8 — 2026-08-28

NEW

Companions: invite friendly NPCs assigned a class to your party, from the suggestion row or the party panel. Recruited companions show in the party strip and have their own sheet.

Campaign cover art now shows on the campaign list and the campaign detail screen.

Narrator accent is now a per-campaign setting for read aloud.

Saving throws now render on the character sheet, with proficiency marked.

Attunement on the character sheet: a budget line, an attuned marker, and a swap selector when you are at your limit.

Achievements now render as a reward card instead of arriving as narration.

The composer remembers which character you last spoke as.

Suggested moves that are rolls now roll when you tap them.

Settings now shows which build and which update the app is running, so you can tell whether a fix has reached you.

FIXED

Sign-in: the screen you land on after signing in with Google, Discord or Apple no longer spins forever when the exchange fails, and startup no longer stalls before it finishes signing you in.

Character sheet skill modifiers were computed from a stored proficiency bonus and could disagree with the ability score printed next to them.

Campaign links opened from the web now open that campaign in the app instead of dead-ending.

Text clipping at larger font sizes, where raising the text size inherited a line height too small for the glyphs.

Scene art: portrait plates on phones, daylight versions of every scene, and re-cut elements so the subject is not hidden behind the play controls.

### 1.0.7 — 2026-08-15

iPad landscape is here, and the app has changed a great deal since you last opened it.

COMBAT RUNS ITSELF NOW
Fights start on the turn they should, with initiative rolled and hit points tracked from the first blow. Attack someone in the scene and that is a fight. Push an NPC far enough and they decide for themselves, on a roll you can see against a number you can argue with.

A new campaign setting sets how readily the world turns violent, from Forgiving to Hair-trigger. It changes how long you get before someone acts, and whether they act at all.

A RULEBOOK IN YOUR POCKET
Looking a rule up usually means a slow, ad-heavy site in another tab. There is now a built-in reference: every spell, monster, class, species and feat from the 5e SRD, plus plain guides to how play works here. No ads, no tracking, and readable in 12 languages.

YOUR CHARACTER, PROPERLY
Level-up asks you to choose. Ability improvements and subclasses are picked by you at the levels the rules allow, and feats are a real option instead of an improvement. Twelve backgrounds, six fighting styles, a second subclass for every class, and thirty new spells. Attunement is tracked. Exhaustion has levels and they bite. Tap a spell on your sheet to read what it does.

WHAT A ROLL LOOKS LIKE
Dice arrive as dice. The die, the modifier, the total and the outcome are shown as separate values instead of another sentence of prose. Your attack bonus is read off your sheet rather than estimated, and totals are checked against it.

FIXES YOU WILL NOTICE
Long Rest restores your hit points, spell slots and hit dice, and the change reaches your sheet. Undo puts your character back, not just the story. Choosing a narrator voice saves. Saving and exiting keeps your spell list. The dice appear once. Ability modifiers read correctly, and affected sheets have been repaired.

If you tried Neural Initiative a while ago and hit something rough, this is a good moment to come back.

### 1.0.6 — 2026-08-12

A tune-up release. A sharper party screen, tidier campaign pages, and a fix so the free tutorial never asks you for anything.

NEW
- Party portraits. Your generated character headshots now appear on the party strip.
- Quieter turns. A setting to hide the per turn suggestion chips, for players who would rather write their own way in.

IMPROVED
- Campaign briefs collapse to a few lines with a Read more, so the page opens clean.
- The in session model picker now lists only narrators that are actually available.
- Updates arrive on your first launch instead of the next one, so fixes reach you sooner.

FIXED
- Scene illustrations reappear when you return to a session instead of leaving a gap.
- The free tutorial no longer offers paid narrator audio. Nothing in it has ever cost credits, and now nothing in it asks.

### 1.0.4 — 2026-08-04

This is a big one. Since your last update, Neural Initiative learned to draw your story, and got a lot smarter at running it.

ILLUSTRATED WORLDS
- Generated scene art. Turns can now render the moment in a premium fantasy rulebook style.
- Living scenes. Fourteen animated, atmospheric backdrops (the inn, open country, the sea, a town, the keep, a mine, a crypt, a forge, the feywild, the eldritch void, nightfall, and more), now with weather and time of day.
- Character portraits. Every hero and key NPC gets a unique AI portrait built from their sheet, plus a matching avatar.
- Reader mode. Hide the backgrounds for a flat, high-contrast backdrop, set per account or per campaign.
- Pick your scene. Choose any background yourself instead of letting the story detect it.

A SHARPER GAME MASTER
- Branching suggestions. Each turn offers a few genuinely different next moves (a careful one, a bold one, a clever one), not filler.
- A new narrator option. Choose the Grok narrator for a different voice at the table.

READING AND PLAY
- Typewriter narration with adjustable speed (Normal, Fast, or Instant).
- Sharper text contrast over every scene.

BRING YOUR PARTY
- Refer a friend and you both get credits to play.

PLUS
- Dozens of scene, readability, and performance improvements, and a long list of stability and reliability fixes.

Gather your party and roll initiative.
