But this app won’t allow me to log in to read daily stories. I regularly read other politically focussed magazines whose articles go on and on far beyond what’s necessary to make their point. Thus far, the articles I have read in The New Republic are thoughtful, informative and mercifully short. But a couple of caveats might be useful to anyone considering it. First, this is one of those sites where you can’t cancel your subscription except by calling customer service, which of course means you’ll have to defend your decision against someone who’ll get in trouble if they let you leave. Second, even as a subscriber to the New York Times, I was kind of appalled at how unabashedly, confrontationally Liberal is their editorial policy. This flavoring will appeal to some of you. But if you’ve got post election PTSD, you may wonder whether their need to offer six months for $10 arises from their not keeping up with trends toward moderation. ### 4/5 — Creative Ideas for Sustaining Our Republic *2022-06-12, version 22.0* I wish I had Time to read all of the New Republic’s articles. When I click on “open’ I get “subscription help” but none of the options allows me to renew my subscription. If I opt out of “subscription help” I am redirected to “open” where I can only open to subscription help where I can’t get help with my subscription! ### 1/5 — My first article made me decide to cancel *2024-08-27, version 24.0* The first article of the New Republic that I read was by Lee Dutrick and was as negative as the republicans are. I am Canadian and from what I witness President Biden was an incredible president and has done so much for your country. Many up here felt that way. He is a politician who gives me hope. All the people who referred to his disastrous debate have obviously never had an off day. And never had a felon, rapist, liar as their debating partner. Meanwhile I understand that Joe Biden was at the same time navigating and expertly negotiating a hostage release. I may have gotten Lee’s surname wrong. His article has so put me off that I am going to cancel and continue the uplifting and informative Substack and the Medias podcast where challenging issues can be brought forward knowing that there are things to do to create a kinder and fairer world. App Functionality? 1 Star *2024-01-28, version 24.0* Could some competent person fix the technical stupidities of the mobile app over there at New Republic Tower? When I’m reading an article, _I prefer to keep reading the article_ instead of having the app reload, forcing me to search for what and where I was reading. Not every frickin’ update calls for an app reload. Also, I _read_ a magazine so I’d prefer not to see displayed a video option at all, whether I want it or not. Also, maybe TNR needs the revenue from all the crappy ads, but do the ads need to disrupt the functionality of the site by causing (you guessed it) gratuitous reloads? I speak as an online subscriber to TNR, and as someone whose phone has more than half of its storage/memory free for applications to work. ### 1/5 — Buggy app *2023-02-21, version 22.0* Paid for subscription online. Why not fix this? ### 1/5 — Some articles don’t open *2022-12-06, version 22.0* I like the magazine. But as of November 2022, this app is a disaster both on iPad and iPhone. Some articles do not open. If you go to settings to do the standard trouble-shooting, there is no icon for getting out of settings (tap the top right: that works even though it is completely blank.) I am of course fully registered. Support people say they can’t do anything unless I bought my subscription through the app, but I didn’t. I bought print + digital. And if I try to read on the website, pop-up windows keep suggesting I should go read something else instead. This weekend's analysis--a near Op.Ed.--on the elite class of liberal, left of center historians apparently hijacking we leftists on what the (still unfinished) 250 year project of America actually means caught my attention. Is the piece a slur on public intellectuals such as Tim Snyder and Heather Cox Richardson (the latter putatively has 3 million subscribes on Substack)? To me Snyder is a god-send in this era's upending of the supposed virtues of the founding of the republic vision of democracy of America. Snyder's open, often free lectures to his students at the University of Toronto, on what history does or does not actually mean--and pragmatically reveals in order to understand--is a gift. At least to me and thousands of other readers, though nowhere near the height of Cox Richardson. The NR's major question--an enigmatic dilemma?--seems encapsulated in the phrase that comes to me after reading: does history even matter today in an era of the systemic dismantling of our democracy's institutional safeguards"? My 2022 book boldly yet perhaps wrongly suggests a new re-written understanding of the buried dark underbelly of America has now been exposed for what we as a nation of freedom lovers were led to believe; the United States of America is UN-United, and always wars since the beginning of the Civil War; and prior to that as the self freed slave, the non-historian Frederick Douglas incisive narrative reveals: the treatment of African slaves and their descendants in our country were caricatured if not legally classified, as real estate."
