The early version allowed a full download of each issue as it became available. I was able to finish the previous issue and move on to the next while out and about offline. Now, I have to connect to get the articles and images as I read. In fact even known operational Cosray Detectors seem to not produce any response from a search. Particularly I want to know about the apparatus at the Australian Antarctic Mawson Station, known as the Cos Ray Telescope. Even the Australian Antarctic Division offers little evidence even of its existence let alone if it is still operating. ### 5/5 — New Scientist Magazine *2022-12-29, version 4.3* NSM is so interesting and informative it should be a mandatory publication in all Science Departments in High Schools, world wide, so all pupils can keep up to date with the amazing variety of topics it covers. It is great value for the money. I cannot expound it’s merits enough. I really enjoy trolling through the wealth of interesting article on all the various topics. Keep up the great work. I am an annual web+app+magazine subscriber, this should not happen. ### 5/5 — Very much faster and easier to use than the old app *2022-05-08, version 4.0.4* I have been a subscriber for many years and love the content but found I kept falling way behind in reading the magazine with the old app as you needed to download whole issues (which was slow) and had to flip through to find the interesting articles. This app solves that problem and makes reading NS a pleasure again. It freezes briefly, or goes blank, or cannot endure scrolling. Very poor. ### 1/5 — Broken. Not worth the subscription. *2026-05-23, version 4.7.8* It loads after about 3 cycles of open and close and 15 minutes. It doesn’t keep the download between sessions, so it won’t work offline. It refreshes the random page at random when reading. Terrible. Is it so bad just to encourage script subscriptions? ### 1/5 — Navigation of New Scientist *2024-01-25, version 4.4* I pay my subscription every year but have great difficulty finding the full articles. I should not have to be verifying through traffic lights. I should be able to tap a link in the article in my inbox. Inputting username and password doesn’t work When I use the app I cannot find the original article . There must be easier ways of doing this Now it keeps telling me the nicknames I try are taken! ### 1/5 — Terrible onboarding. Total rip off *2024-01-17, version 4.4* After paying a subscription I received an email with a ‘activation’ button. Entered all the details but when submitted it just returns you to the same page with all the details blanked out. I tried it about 10 times with same results. I have no password and the password reset button doesn’t send an email link so I’ve paid money and have no way of logging onto the app to read the articles. Waiting to see if I get any response to my email of complaint . Never seen such a poor onboarding process. ### 1/5 — Absolutely awful *2023-03-24, version 4.3* I don’t know why I put up with this so long before writing a review. Very slow to load content. Incessant repeated “failed to load timeline “ and other errors. Takes forever to download a magazine and won’t let me read it offline. Doesn’t remember my place when I reopen the app - just a blank screen. What the hell is INSURLEdomainerror? The old app was great. I just want to read the current issue of the magazine. Really, I might just go back to waiting 10 days for print delivery it would be more fulfilling. Worst magazine app ever. ### 1/5 — Glaring highlights *2022-04-03, version 4.0.2* Very unhappy with this new version of the NS, as a 30 yr plus subscriber to the magazine and a fan of the online versions since they came out, for the first time I’m tempted to revert to the hard copy. Readability - bring back the section headers, I don’t need to know it’s about humans, but I want to know if i am in the news or the views section without having to revert to the index to find out. Please please please get rid of the yellow highlighted adverts and links, they are awful to have on the screen. Very distracting. I am sick of the same live event advert appearing on every page in glaring yellow (even tho the event is passed) we should not have to see these in every article. Bookmarks are not useful, the app used to know where I was up to, this is a big loss. ### 1/5 — Night mode has gone *2022-03-12, version 4.0.0* The “new” app has removed night/dark mode, this was essential to reading in bed without disturbing my partner. The FAQ still mentions it under settings with font size, but it’s not there. Why make the app worse? ### 1/5 — Problems *2020-10-01, version 2.8.0* For no reason I can think of my New Scientist App no longer allows me to download issues despite my subscription being valid till next year. The usual activist nonsense re the environment with the political meme that doesn’t debate just lectures. I would like to know how notes are perceived as colours ..or how paintings of various combinations might smell or taste ..even sound.The process of multiple sensory perception ,they say is reversible so all sorts of mental overlays potentially exist ..quite possibly to the annoyance of ‘always on’synaesthetes . Until this morning reading New Scientist on the phone ,I never knew we the readers could comment or review the magazine ..which I think is valuable usually in these times of climate crisis and uncertainty.
