## Newest reviews (15 of 84)

### 3/5 — Could be more accessible

*2026-07-06, version 4.7.8*

Times New Roman or similar fonts seems to be used in a lot of New Scientist articles which makes them much harder and more tiring to read if you’re dyslexic. The navigation isn’t very clear either (hard to find the same article again if you hadn’t finished reading it in one go, for example) but the article content is so interesting. It’s just a shame it’s not more user-friendly.

### 3/5 — Dark mode needs work

*2026-05-11, version 4.7.8*

I use this often at night and when in bed, so I’ve got it set to dark mode, but the very first ‘new scientist’ screen is so bright it makes my eyes water and wakes my wife up ! Also, although I appreciate they are trying to maximise content there are an awful lot of insubstantial articles, often citing dodgy Chinese universities and researchers. It’s widely known in academic circles that Chinese academics and Chinese academic institutions don’t align with accepted norms of practice and often don’t allow Western academics review or allow them to assess or critique their findings, so why should their work be so widely disseminated here ? Answer: to create more content ? Or is it just more CCP soft power at work and money changing hands ? Either way, it doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence.

### 4/5 — Great magazine

*2025-10-13, version 4.7.1*

great magazine but the user interface could b improved

### 2/5 — Difficult accessing content

*2025-08-05, version 4.6.9*

Despite having a subscription and being signed in on the app, when it comes to accessing content the app repeatedly asks me to subscribe! This still annoying to have to go back to initiating original subscription online for the app to work for a brief period.

### 4/5 — A few glitches but much easier than reading on the website

*2025-08-02, version 4.6.9*

Easy to download new issues and read with the option of enlarging the main text, but there are a few glitches sometimes. Useful links to follow when online but can also be read offline so good to read on holiday! Only problem is when you finish an article it goes back to the top of the list so you have to scroll down again to find the next one.

### 3/5 — Nice but no search function!!

*2025-07-26, version 4.6.9*

I have not found a search function yet. How can I find the articles I vaguely remember reading but did not bookmark at the time because I did not know then that I’d want to refer back to them in future?

### 5/5 — Cheerful read

*2024-12-12, version 4.6.3*

A weekly collection of well curated short articles, that cheer me up while educating me. My favourite weekly read.

### 5/5 — Fantastic science news and much more….

*2024-11-24, version 4.6.3*

New Scientist has been part of my life for over 40 years ….. the app is brilliant …. Thoroughly recommended

### 4/5 — Improvements

*2024-11-07, version 4.6.3*

It’s good but could be better if these two things were included:

1. Ability to tap an article name on the magazine cover to take you to the article.

2. if when you played the magazine on Bluetooth it didn’t default to previously played articles from an earlier issue.

### 5/5 — New Scientist

*2024-11-01, version 4.6.3*

I love new scientist. It provides me with all the latest science news, and explains it all in a comprehensive way.

### 5/5 — Soooo informative!

*2024-08-10, version 4.6.2*

Brilliant and interesting to read all these facts. I can’t think of anywhere else where I could do this. I find it fascinating!!

### 4/5 — Pretty good app with one main issue for me

*2024-07-20, version 4.6.2*

It’s difficult to find the “search” button and the search function doesn’t work very well.

### 5/5 — Back to the fold

*2024-05-14, version 4.6.1*

I retired at 78 and the income became critical.
So NS had to be sacrificed.
Now my wife has taken pity on my loss and on my 80 birthday. So now I am fully up ready running again.
Yes!!!

### 4/5 — Great content poor app

*2024-04-13, version 4.5*

App is very 2017. Needs an update; worst part is that clicking notifications doesn’t load the article you clicked.

### 5/5 — Science to everyone

*2024-04-01, version 4.5*

New scientist is the go to magazine for science related articles.
Highly recommend for all to read.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Cancelling / pausing process

*2026-08-08, version 4.7.8*

The process to cancel or pause a subscription is malicious. I need to pause for a year or so due to ‘life stuff’, and oh my: no you cannot do this through the app, try the website, oops no your subscriber number isn’t recognised for *reasons* try our help desk…

### 1/5 — Impossible to use

*2026-07-06, version 4.7.8*

I registered but my password didn’t work when I tried to sign in . Next I tried “forgot my password” and was instructed to go to my emails for a reset.
No email ever appeared. Tried several times but got nothing in any mailboxes including junk. Access is therefore impossible.
First saw on Facebook which said “free access” but I see there is a subscription to pay first? All very confusing so safer to buy the printed version

### 1/5 — Unsubscribe

*2025-02-26, version 4.6.6*

Not possible to unsubscribe from website or app as stated when originally subscribed. Contact phone number is non functional ( in UK) cannot re login to account as stating membership number does not match email so impossible to contact them . Going to call bank to cancel future subscription payment as it looks almost like a scam site . Or using scam practices.

### 1/5 — Past issues no longer available

*2024-11-18, version 4.6.3*

After I stopped my subscription I tried to read past issues which I had bought and which I can no longer access without paying again. Robbery or fraud?

### 1/5 — The content is good but the app is hard to navigate

*2024-04-13, version 4.5*

I’ve had and got rid off the New Scientist app several times. The content can be good but it’s often a bit too superficial for even a non-scientist like me. But it has always been so. The one star is because the app remains basic and difficult to navigate. Where is the search function?? I get regular emails from New Scientist, I spot an interesting article but when I go to the app is it easy to find? No. Putting a magazine online or into an app isn’t just about dumping the content by topic, it should be a dynamic, active experience, leading you through the content that interests you. Maybe time for a bit of AI :)

### 1/5 — Large font doesn’t work consistently

*2024-02-12, version 4.4*

There is a setting to increase the font size for visually impaired people like me, but it does not increase the titles of the articles available via the various tabs eg “Latest”, “Space”, “Technology”. Instead the article titles listed on these pages vary from a few medium ones to tiny, which I assume is the size all other users get. If I can find an article and open it, the text size is enlarged correctly, but if you can’t browse the full selection to see what there is to read it’s pretty pointless.

Ironically, the page that contains “tools” where you find the accessibility settings to increase the font size only displays in tiny standard size font as well, even after you increase the setting to maximum. Similarly the menus along the bottom eg “home”, “magazine”, only display in the standard size.

This app has the potential to open up a whole world of information for visually impaired people, but it falls short when it comes to basic navigation.

### 1/5 — Pestered for Reviews

*2024-01-27, version 4.4*

Looks like a good App but after downloading it for all of maybe five minutes, I couldn’t browse articles without being constantly asked for a Review! Despite clicking not now several times it kept asking. So, hence this review. I hope to be able to enjoy the app in peace without interruptions asking me for feedback before anybody could reasonably be expected to have formulated an opinion on it

### 1/5 — Hopeless

*2024-01-16, version 4.4*

Have run out of options to resolve my problem with NS so am resorting to this. The magazine is fine. Subscribed for years. The shop - well that is a putrid well of incompetence and dishonesty. They took my money when I placed my order on 15 December 2023 of books, jigsaws etc - gifts for children etc - but nothing has arrived (as at 16 January 2024). There is no contact number for the shop and all emails are responded to with a thank you but we will get back to you in 2 days. I have never had a reply in 2 days. Don’t waste time or money on their shop, which is run by wood lice.

### 1/5 — Subscription took money, but no subscription!

*2023-12-16, version 4.4*

Subscription routine only worked up to the point of taking my money!

### 1/5 — No offline mode

*2023-11-29, version 4.4*

You can download issues to read offline but the app itself doesn’t load if you don’t have perfect internet… won’t be renewing my subscription.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — A brain work out personally paced

*2026-06-16, version 4.7.8*

A spoilt for choice range of articles to suit any specialists and to create a mouth watering, yet healthy buffet for people like me who jump around subject areas filling their heads with wonderful information that actually can be trusted. In this overwhelmingly biased information environment true information is as important, to an inquisitive mind, as water to the body.

### 5/5 — Well balanced source of information

*2026-05-03, version 4.7.8*

It is refreshing to have a stable publication with balanced research and views.

### 5/5 — Great app great articles

*2026-04-23*

The best app I know for a magazine. Can easily download issues for public transport/flights. Audio reading of articles is genuinely much better than other app experiences. Very happy

### 5/5 — Awesome

*2026-03-20*

The articles, the overview, the audio option.. just great

### 5/5 — Reach for the stars

*2025-12-06, version 4.7.1*

I’d absolutely love to have it but it’s much too expensive on a pension

### 5/5 — Time Bent

*2025-11-11, version 4.7.1*

Journalism, where the time spent is more than replaced by the knowledge learnt. Soaps are the opposite

### 5/5 — So pleased I subscribed

*2025-08-11, version 4.7.1*

Endless articles on a sea of subjects. Professionally presented and digestible and trustworthy. Best mind expansion and best value app I can name. Much more than I was expecting. Far much more. Amazed I am.

### 5/5 — Needs variable text size

*2025-06-03, version 4.6.6*

Great to have NS available online. But the text size is very small and is not configurable - please could this facility be added ?

### 5/5 — If I Could Afford To

*2025-05-01, version 4.6.6*

I buy occasional copies of New Scientist, to read on long journeys, etc. If I could afford to, I would subscribe but I am not convinced I would read the whole magazine every week. If anyone has a solution to my problem, I would be pleased to hear it.
Thanks.

### 5/5 — Average citizen

*2025-04-26, version 4.6.6*

Unfortunately I don’t have enough time to follow the NS regularly but it’s so nice to drop in when something catches my attention and I really appreciate the access to the magazine articles.
