Collections have story lists so you can choose one tale. Across the library, Originals and standalone selections, 23 titles stay free and Nightshelf Pro unlocks 76 more. Ten Nightshelf Originals Complete stories written with AI for Nightshelf, with illustrated covers and clear AI attribution. The new Tide-Glass Observatory follows a quiet evening beside three views of yesterday's coast. The Garden Between Stations offers an unhurried journey through a space ferry's planted lounge. These are prepared stories you can return to, with no generation needed. A complete tale for tonight Short listens brings the Originals together with twelve complete selections from the classics. Choose a length, read the story's description, and save a title for later. Listening times follow your selected narrator and speed. Some traditional tales contain frightening scenes or dated language; descriptions help you choose the experience you want. Your voice, your evening Use the on-device narrator to read bundled stories without streaming, or choose one of six AI cloud narrators with Pro. Add rain, ocean waves, a fireplace, wind, thunder or a flowing stream. Set a sleep timer with a gentle fade, or use listening mode when you want to stay awake. Optional continuation moves through short tales until the sleep timer ends. Return to your place Pause, move between chapters, rewind or skip ahead, and preview a passage before jumping to it. A story of your own With Pro, Tonight's Story creates a story from your chosen mood, setting and optional idea, with a generated cover. On-device narration speaks locally. Optional cloud narration sends the paragraph being read and the one after it, fetched early so the reading does not pause. Tonight's Story sends your selections and anything you type, and its cover request sends the story's title, tone and setting. These requests go through Nightshelf's server to OpenAI for audio and covers or Anthropic for writing. Device or subscription identifiers and usage records support access and limits. A Service of Love and The Golden Touch are now available as complete standalone classic listens. Listening estimates now follow your chosen narrator across the player, chapters and recovery controls. This update also improves interruption handling and large-text layouts, adds Help & support with optional technical details, and clarifies privacy information and book descriptions. Verified Pro subscriptions now work across devices without the former device-count refusal. Devices share the subscription's service limits. The library now contains 77 classic volumes. Peter Pan, Irish Fairy Tales and Pinocchio are temporarily unavailable while we review territorial rights for those editions. ### 1.6 — 2026-09-18 No nightly limit on cloud narration with Nightshelf Pro. The only limit is a fair-use one, there to stop automated misuse. If a narrator is interrupted, by that limit or by a dropped connection, the story carries on in your device voice and the AI narrator comes back on its own. Cloud narration also starts sooner after you press play, and very long passages, such as Mr Darcy's letter in Pride and Prejudice, are read by the AI narrators too instead of switching to the device voice. If you unlocked Nightshelf Pro by redeeming a code, the AI narrators and Tonight's Story now recognise your subscription on up to five of your devices instead of one, and reinstalling Nightshelf keeps a device recognised. When a short listen ends while your sleep timer is still running, the next tale from the same page now follows it, until the timer does. Turn it off beside the default timer in Settings. Kinder to the nightstand: the screen can now lock whenever narration pauses or a story ends, it stays dim when the sleep timer fades, and brightness you raise in Control Center is left alone. Every sleep-timer option, Chapter included, is now within reach on every iPhone. Better chapter lists: story collections get back tales that were missing from their lists, a preface is no longer numbered Chapter I, and Tanglewood Tales, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, East of the Sun and West of the Moon, Raggedy Ann Stories and The Sketch-Book now have chapters. Also: the cloud narrators are labelled as AI voices where you choose them, Restore no longer reports a missing subscription when the App Store can't be reached, and opening a book on a second device no longer overwrites a newer listening place. ### 1.5 — 2026-09-16 Nightshelf Originals: eight complete bedtime stories written with AI for Nightshelf, from gentle tales to a quiet romance and a discovery among the stars, in their own cover gallery. Short listens gathers single tales from the classics and the Originals that you can finish in one sitting, filtered by length. Keep any story in Saved for later; your saved shelf syncs through your own iCloud. Find your place: rewind or skip ahead 15 seconds, drag the chapter progress bar, or open Find a passage to preview a spot before you jump. Your play or pause state and your sleep timer carry over. Listening times are estimates at your reading speed. Natural rain, rolling thunder, a crackling fireplace, wind through pine trees, ocean waves and a flowing stream — all included for offline listening, with gentler fades and smoother sound switching. Story creation starts with an optional idea, then a mood and a length. And a gentler page: text and covers now fade softly at the edges instead of being cut off, and the Nightshelf Pro page is shorter and simpler. More reliable on-device narration, with recovery if the voice stalls and safer sleep-timer handling when playback cannot start. Reading clocks are clearer, and chapter lists and book-cover layouts have been refined. ### 1.4 — 2026-09-14 A calmer shelf, with room to see every cover. Browse books two across, read the title and author beneath the artwork, or press and hold for a closer look. Continue listening is easier to find, and the featured book is always one you can play. Drifted off mid-story? The player keeps your place when the sleep timer fades. Press Play to continue with a fresh timer, or open Where was I? to find the last passage you remember. Playback stays within reach while you browse a category. Chapter names are easier to scan, and more books open to a complete chapter list. Reading speed and text size have their own controls. Search finds saved stories as well as classics, including names with accents. This update also improves interrupted story generation, safe saving, restored Pro access, and playback when changing books or sleep timers. ### 1.3 — 2026-09-12 Subscribing now finishes what you started. Tap a locked book, subscribe, and Nightshelf opens that book — before, it dropped you back on the shelf with nothing open, and the shelf had quietly reordered itself under you. Subscribers stop losing the shelf when the App Store is briefly out of reach. Opening the app while signed out of the App Store, or in the first minutes after restoring a phone, could relock every paid book a second after launch, with nothing on screen to say why. Nightshelf now keeps your subscription through a blip and only believes a refusal the store repeats. It also asks, once, whether the six cloud narrators may read to you. That question used to wait for a later launch, so a new subscriber could spend a week on the on-device voice wondering where Nova had gone — and saying no did not stick, so the question came back on the next launch, and the one after that. One answer now holds. Say no and nothing you paid for goes away: the whole shelf stays open and every book still reads aloud on this phone, offline. The narrator stops reading the furniture. Pride and Prejudice spoke a hundred and sixty paragraphs that are not the novel — picture captions, and a publisher's copyright line repeated through the book; King Arthur read out three hundred margin notes; other books had an editor's preface or a publisher's list of other titles where chapter one should have been, and one story narrated a garbled word no author wrote. Those are gone, and the books open on their first real sentence. Collections name their tales again. Grimm's offered three entries for sixty tales, Robin Hood offered one, four of the coloured Fairy Books listed a fraction of theirs, and three collections listed their scholarly endnotes instead of their stories — so tapping a tale landed on a citation. Every one of those lists is the stories now. The sleep timer's Chapter setting fades at the end of the chapter you are actually in, and on a book with no chapters it no longer quietly cancels the timer you already had running. Quieter and less dark. Finishing a book no longer buzzes the phone on the pillow beside you, and the reading-speed and volume sliders no longer tick on every step of a drag. Dimming for a book and then locking the phone used to leave the whole device at eighteen percent — in Messages, in Maps, everywhere — until you noticed and dragged the slider back, because only closing the player undid it and locking the phone never closes anything. The dim now lasts exactly as long as you are in Nightshelf. Smaller repairs. Redeeming a code now confirms and closes the purchase screen instead of leaving it looking untouched. The Voice setting says plainly when cloud narration is off, and where to switch it on. A permission the phone refuses to save now says so instead of closing as if it worked.
