## What is Nits?

Nits is a fast, native viewer for 16-bit HDR TIFFs — built for photographers who
want to see every stop of light their camera captured, in full dynamic range, on
their iPad's HDR display.

Open a TIFF and it fills the screen instantly. Pinch to zoom all the way to 1:1
pixels with fluid, tile-based rendering that stays sharp no matter how large the
file. No waiting, no downsampled mush.

— SEE TRUE HDR —
Nits renders gain-map and float HDR TIFFs in full extended dynamic range, so
highlights glow the way they did in the scene instead of clipping to white.

— READ YOUR IMAGE —
• Live RGB histogram with an SDR/HDR split, so you can see at a glance which
  highlights are still in range.
• EXIF panel with focal length, aperture, shutter, ISO, lens, color profile,
  bit depth, and HDR headroom.

— MOVE THROUGH A SHOOT —
• Filmstrip of every image in the folder — tap a thumbnail to jump straight to it.
• Swipe left or right to step through frames.

— BUILT TO BE FAST —
Tile-based Metal rendering, memory-mapped files, and caches that scale to your
iPad's chip mean even huge multi-hundred-megapixel HDR files open and pan smoothly.

— MADE BY A PHOTOGRAPHER —
I built Nits because I was tired of waiting fifteen seconds for a 600 MB HDR TIFF
to open. So I wrote my own viewer that opens them instantly and renders them in
full dynamic range. Every example image inside the app is from my own travels in
France, Tanzania, Japan, and Zanzibar.

Nits is a focused viewer — no account, no subscription, no clutter. Buy it once,
open your images, and see them at their best.

## Version history (last 2 releases)

### 1.0.1 — 2026-07-02

Sharper HDR images.

• Fixed a bug that made HDR photos look soft or low-resolution when fit to the screen on iPad Pro and other high-resolution displays. Images now open crisp at full Retina resolution.

Thanks for using Nits! If you're enjoying it, a quick review really helps.

### 1.0 — 2026-06-17
