## What is NOAA Weather Radar?

NOAA Weather Radar: Unofficial shows you the forecasts, radar and alerts the National Weather Service issues. That includes live NEXRAD Doppler radar, watches and warnings for your area, and the Area Forecast Discussion your local NWS office writes twice a day.

No ads, no account, no tracking. Free.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The SPC severe weather risk at your location

SEVERE WEATHER ALERTS
• Push notifications when the NWS issues a warning, watch or advisory for your area: tornado, severe thunderstorm, flash flood, winter storm, hurricane, heat and more

• NOAA lightning strike density in 15-minute frames, from U.S. and global detection networks
• A separate lightning loop

HURRICANES & TROPICAL STORMS
• National Hurricane Center forecast cones, forecast tracks and past tracks

• NHC's 7-day outlook for areas where new storms may form

WINTER STORMS
• Expected snow and ice for each of the next 7 days
• WPC's Winter Storm Severity Index, which rates how disruptive a storm will be and whether snow, ice or wind is the main threat
• Chances of 4, 8 or 12 inches of snow, or a quarter inch of ice

TEXT PRODUCTS
• Every text product your NWS office issues, with when each was issued: Area Forecast Discussion, Hazardous Weather Outlook, Local Storm Reports, Public Information Statements, fire, winter, marine and river products and more
• SPC convective outlooks (Marginal through High), with the risk at your location
• SPC mesoscale discussions and WPC heavy rain discussions

FORECAST & CONDITIONS
• 7-day NWS forecast, current conditions, and an hourly forecast that also shows the past 12 hours
• NOAA's 6–10 and 8–14 day outlooks: the chance of warmer, cooler, wetter or drier than normal

• Air quality from EPA AirNow

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.25.0 — 2026-10-27

• See the last 12 hours on the Hourly screen. Scroll left from Now to see what the nearest weather station recorded.
• A new Text products list at the bottom of the Weather screen has all of your NWS office's text products, with when each was issued. It includes public information statements, marine and river products, and monthly climate data.
• The SPC storm outlook shows the severe weather risk at your location. When you are in a risk area, the Weather screen tells you.
• Heavy rain discussions from the Weather Prediction Center sit next to the SPC discussions. Both open on the ones near you when one covers your location.
• Alert settings are now at the top of the Alerts screen.
• The snow level row on the Hourly screen lines up with the other rows again.
• The snow level alert setting only appears where the NWS forecasts snow levels.

### 1.24.0 — 2026-10-26

• Barometric pressure on the Weather screen, with whether it rose, fell or held steady over the last 3 hours. It replaces the rain chance tile, which is still in the hourly and 7-day forecasts.
• Choose inHg or hPa for pressure in Settings, Units.
• Larger text on all widgets. The large widget shows each day's high and low side by side, and the medium widget shows tonight and the next 5 days.
• Tapping a widget now opens the right screen: weather widgets open the forecast for their place, and the radar widget opens the map.
• Shared links now open the place that was shared instead of the last screen you had open.

### 1.23.0 — 2026-10-23

• The app now follows your iPhone's text size setting.
• Saved places show when a warning or advisory is active there.
• Minimum severity in Settings now filters alerts by how the National Weather Service rates them. If you never changed it, you still get every alert you got before.
• The forecast discussion now starts with the forecaster's key messages.
• National Weather Service test messages no longer show up as alerts.
• Turning alerts off now works even if you were offline at the time.
• If notifications are off, the Alerts screen shows how to turn them on.
• After an update, a short note shows what's new. Tips on the Weather screen point out features you haven't tried yet.
• Tides are marked past or upcoming correctly for places in another time zone.
• Small buttons are easier to tap and small text is easier to read, including on smaller screens with Display Zoom.
• Deleted locations stay deleted, and places without an NWS forecast no longer leave the app stuck.

### 1.22.0 — 2026-10-20

• New NOAA Radar widget: the latest radar image for your location on your home screen, in three sizes
• Warnings show how far away the storm is, and an estimated arrival time if it's heading toward you
• Hourly forecast adds temperature and wind graphs
• New map layers: rain totals (past 24 hours to the next 7 days) and weather fronts for the next 3 days
• Sharing a forecast now includes a link. It opens that place in the app, or in a web version for people who don't have the app.
• The app starts faster
• If iOS closes the app in the background, it reopens on the screen you were using
• Tapping a notification now opens the screen it's about
• Alert cards start collapsed, so the list is easier to scan

### 1.21.0 — 2026-09-27

• You now get one notification per weather event. You're notified again only if it becomes more dangerous or a warning or watch is extended. Settings > How alerts are sent explains how it works.
• The app tells you when a newer version is available.
• Radar, satellite, lightning and Storm Center refresh on their own.
• Watches are no longer labeled as warnings.
• The most serious alert is listed first, in the app and in widgets.
• Current conditions skip weather stations that have stopped reporting.
• Alerts follow your location when you travel.
• Climate records say whether they're from today or yesterday.
• Sunrise and sunset times are more accurate.
• The rain chance on forecast icons matches the forecast text.
• Dragging the map tools panel up and down works better.
• Widgets retry within minutes after a failed update.
• The Details screen loads faster.
• Fixes for UV readings in other time zones, quiet hours starting at midnight, Storm Center products that fail to load, and coastal flood and extreme heat alert colors.
• Clearer wording throughout the app.
