The details: iOS 17.2 + Arius YDP 103 + wire Good: - The app found the device - The app’s UI is intuitively clear - The recorded file is possible to share/save outside the app - The app can record longer then 1 minute of playtime Not good: the app… - Records, but then plays with wrong temp (faster or slower) - Records, but skips parts of played notes - Records, but crashes when playing back - Doesn’t record (fixed with restarting the app) So I didn’t get any records I can use so far. ### 2/5 — Ok but not great *2021-03-14* Like the others I have found that the timing is off on recording and importing. I have noticed that the recording is about two clicks faster than the actual tempo that I played. If it was just a solo piece that’s not an issue but if I’m trying to line it up with other tracks it becomes an issue and I have to adjust it in post which is not ideal. I would be curious if the developers had any input as to why it would be several clicks faster in the recording? ### 2/5 — Poorly made *2020-09-30* Nice idea but the execution really isn’t there. Every time I try to record more than 10 seconds it lags behind and cuts off the rest of my playing once I press stop. Simplifies midi work flow on iPhone a lot. ### 4/5 — Great For Piano Practice *2019-08-30, version 1.1.2* This app allows you to record stand alone tracks in a project, you cannot multitrack. This is perfect for trying out different versions of your tune but best of all it is ideal for piano practice - you can record right hand and left hand as separate tracks and although you can’t play them back together you can use them to practice each hand separately. The interface is simple and uncluttered. It could be improved if you were able to loop the tracks with a short delay before restart. ### 4/5 — I got it to capture ideas. Impossible to export them *2019-05-21* As it says in the product description “When you’ve got something worth keeping, you’ll want to use the right tool for the job: share your MIDI file with a computer for additional editing and mastering.” i couldn’t find that feature for the life of me, even on their website. But reading a review found it. Swipe left. ### 3/5 — Useful app. Needs a bit of work. *2019-03-18* Really useful app! I wish there was a count-in for the metronome. Also, the sustain pedal function is buggy. If you mute playback while the sustain is on, it’s off when you unmute and has to be tapped twice to re-enable it. There really needs to be an export to cloud function. I don‘t want to always have to connect my phone to the computer, open iTunes, and import the midi files that way. Please add an easier way to export the midi files! EDIT: the developer wrote back (thank you!) and mentioned the “swipe left to delete or export” function. Great! However, when I was looking for this function, I couldn’t find anything about it in any online documentation. Glad it’s so easy, though. Thanks again. **Developer response:** Thanks for your feedback and support! We'll take a look at the sustain function, but I wanted to point out that sharing a single recording is just a matter of swiping from right to left over it and tapping "share" or, to share all recordings for an entire project, open the Projects list and swipe over the project name to share all of them at once. From there you can AirDrop it to a nearby computer or tap "save to files" to copy it to iCloud or any other cloud storage provider you've set up to work with the Files app. No iTunes needed. Says it's a MIDI recorder. It's actually a KEYBOARD ONLY midi tecorder. I attached my Akai MPD218 MIDI pad controller with the intention of recording a finger drum part only to discover the app does not support anything other than piano notes. ### 1/5 — Doesn't save a valid Midi file *2022-09-28* Unfortuantely this app doesn't seem to save ### 1/5 — Quits immediately *2022-02-15* All the support seems to be for another of their apps, forscore. The share feature doesn’t work. ### 1/5 — No Bluetooth support *2021-02-03* Doesn’t pick up any midi signals via Bluetooth. ### 1/5 — “Just connect your MIDI device to your iPhone, iPad” *2020-11-08, version 1.3.2* I don’t see any option in the Settings to connect my MIDI device (in my case a Bluetooth wireless MIDI that is paired with my iPad, and is “connected”). All I see is a virtual keyboard. The product description is misleading and if I don’t get the option to record using a digital keyboard (not a virtual keyboard), then I should not even be paying for this app. It’s too bad because I’m one of the earliest owners of ForScore and I expected the quality of Nocturne to be on par as ForScore. ### 1/5 — Lost data *2020-07-13* Done two improvisations about 10 minutes long. Lost all data in the last 15%. Really disappointed. ### 1/5 — Inaccurate recording of rhythm *2019-03-03* There seems to be an issue with the timing of midi events. They are not captured precisely in time. I am professional pianist (and developer) who was hoping to grab my midi data from various gigs on keyboards to use for training data in ML tasks, but this program fell short on multiple keyboard models. Which is surprising for a company that released such a beautiful app as forScore. I will certainly continue using forScore daily while recommending it to others, but this particular app needs some serious QA work on various peripherals if the app is going to cost money. I was let down.. ### 2/5 — MIDI support is unreliable. *2021-12-20* Great idea, but without the promised external MIDI support it’s basically a very simple onscreen keyboard with exportable MIDI files. Not terrible, but also not what is advertised. I believe this is the only app that will do it if looking for a “pocket” recorder. Just had to plug my piano directly to my phone through USB B > USB C. Thank you! ### 5/5 — Brilliant little app *2024-03-16, version 1.5* Nocturne is great; its tiny footprint allows it to be on all the time, quietly running in the background. Its lack of un-necessary complexity means you can hear your midi keyboard without having to create a session in more complex software such as Garageband or Logic. While you can save/share 'recordings', its great benefit to me is that my midi keyboard is always on and audible and I can test ideas without having to mess around opening and setting up software.
