## What is Nofret?

You don't know the fretboard until you don't have to think about it.

Most guitarists can eventually work out any note on the neck. Given a few seconds. That's not the same as knowing it — three seconds is far too slow to use mid-song, which is why the fretboard stays a chore long after you've "learned" it.

Just starting out? Do this first. Most players put it off for years and pay for it every time they read a chart or work out a scale. Getting it right now saves you that detour.

Nofret drills you until you can name or find any note in a fraction of a second. Five minutes a day, aimed at whichever positions are still slowing you down.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT

It measures speed, not just accuracy. Your chart is your median response time falling week by week, toward the point where recall stops feeling like recall.

It measures your thinking, not your reflexes. A quick speed check runs first — notes handed to you, nothing to identify — and that figure comes off every answer afterwards.

It trains both directions. Naming a note you're shown and finding one you're told are different skills, and one doesn't give you the other. Nofret scores them separately; a stage opens only when both are up to speed.

It starts where you already are. A short placement test finds the edge of what you know — no grinding through strings you mastered years ago, and no problem if that edge is the very beginning. Stage one is the six open strings, nothing else.

It adapts as you go, aiming to keep you around 85% correct. Much easier and you stop learning; much harder and you stop enjoying it.

It works in landscape. Turn the phone for twice as much neck, laid out the way it looks when you're playing.

You can answer out loud. On the drills that ask you to name a note, say it instead of reaching for the pad, so your eyes never leave the fretboard. Recognition runs on your device.

You hear every note. Each position plays as it comes up, so your ear learns alongside your eye.

BUILT ON HOW MEMORY ACTUALLY WORKS

Every question is a retrieval attempt, not a review — pulling something out of memory strengthens it far more than seeing it again. Positions come back just as they start to fade, a new string is drilled alone before it's mixed with everything else, and moving up a stage takes two days, because a night's sleep is part of how the first one holds.

WAYS TO PRACTICE

Two modes are scored, and moving up a stage needs both:
Note ID — you're shown a position, you name the note
Note Hunt — you're given a note, you find it on the neck

Four more are untracked, for breaking through whatever's holding the scored modes back:
Free Practice — loose reps, narrowed to any strings, frets or notes you like
New String — only the string your stage just introduced
Weak Spots — only the positions you're slowest on
Find Them All — one note, every place it lives on the neck

Plus Study — browse the whole neck, nothing timed or scored.

NINE STAGES
From the six open strings to the whole neck — all 24 frets, sharps and flats.

SEE WHERE YOU HESITATE
A heatmap of the whole neck, colored by speed or accuracy. You'll find gaps you didn't know you had — and watch them close.

PLAY IT YOUR WAY
Alternate tunings — Drop D and Open G — each with its own stage, history and streak. Sharps or flats, whichever you read faster.

NO ACCOUNT. NO ADS. NO TRACKING.
Everything stays on your device. Nofret works entirely offline.

FREE TO START
The first two stages — the open strings and the low E — are free forever, with both scored modes, Free Practice, Study and your history. A complete app, not a demo.

Nofret Pro unlocks the other seven stages, three more practice modes — New String, Weak Spots and Find Them All — and the alternate tunings.

Nofret Pro is a one-time purchase, at a founding price for the first buyers. No subscription, no renewal, nothing to cancel. Try it as long as you like first: the free stages never expire.
