## What is Noise Rounds?

Noise Rounds is an environmental noise-hygiene audit tool for clinical and care settings. It turns your iPhone into a structured way to measure, record, and review ambient sound levels as you move through a unit.
Rather than a single instantaneous reading, Noise Rounds takes a timed measurement and reports the A-weighted average (LAeq) together with the peak level (LAFmax) — the same pair of metrics used in environmental noise guidance. You choose the measurement window, log the result against where you are and what is happening, and build a picture of noise across your environment over time.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Take timed measurements — 15, 30, or 60-second windows. The 60-second window corresponds to the one-minute LAeq convention used in intensive-care noise studies.
• See the average, peak, and minimum for each measurement, with day and night thresholds applied automatically.
• Log each reading against an area (patient room, nursing station, doorway, stores, round area, corridor), the activity taking place, and — for patient rooms — the equipment present and whether any device is alarming.
• Add a free-text observation, and attach an auditor name to every record.
• Receive advisory recommendations for each reading, drawn from published environmental-noise literature.
• Review pattern insights across your recent readings — recurring high-noise areas, activity stacking, conversation, and alarm trends.
• Export selected records as a CSV file for your own analysis or reporting.
DESIGNED FOR REAL ROUNDS
Noise Rounds is built to be used on the move: choose a window, measure, log, and continue. Day and night thresholds switch automatically, so the same reading is judged against the appropriate target for the time of day.
PRIVACY BY DESIGN
The microphone is used only to estimate sound levels in real time. No audio is ever recorded, stored, or transmitted. All your audit records stay on your device. There is no account, no login, no analytics, and no tracking.
IMPORTANT
Noise Rounds is an auditing and quality-improvement aid. It is not a medical device and does not provide certified acoustic measurement. Readings are indicative estimates from an uncalibrated device microphone, with practical limits at very quiet and very loud levels. Recommendations and insights are advisory only and do not replace professional or clinical judgement; the auditing team is responsible for all interpretation, decisions, and actions. For precise measurement, calibrate against a reference sound-level meter using the in-app offset.
