## What is NoiseGauge?

NoiseGauge uses your iPhone's built-in microphone to estimate ambient sound levels. No external hardware is required. Basic measurements are unlimited, work offline, and include a complete result when you stop.

HOW IT WORKS
NoiseGauge reads microphone input, computes the average power in dBFS, then applies a calibration offset to estimate sound pressure level (SPL). The default +100 dB offset works well for most iPhone models. You can fine-tune the offset against a trusted reference meter if closer comparison matters.

IMPORTANT NOTE
Smartphone microphones are not laboratory-grade instruments. NoiseGauge provides estimates suitable for general awareness, not regulatory or medical decisions. For compliance measurements, use a certified Type 1 or Type 2 sound level meter.

PRIVACY
Microphone audio is analyzed in real time and never recorded, stored, or transmitted. No analytics, no ads, no account required.

Added Session Brief on the main meter, with clearer exposure guidance, trend, peak, and calibration context. iPad reference and paywall layouts are also cleaner, and microphone-denied recovery is more reliable.

NoiseGauge now turns the live dB estimate into clearer exposure guidance, so it is easier to tell when to keep listening, lower the volume, take a quiet break, or move away. This update also refines the iPad meter layout and strengthens regression coverage for microphone permission, subscriptions, calibration, and reference levels.

### 1.0.3 — 2026-06-03

This update completes the English in-app experience and clarifies how NoiseGauge estimates sound levels from the phone microphone. The home screen, calibration, reference table, subscription flow, and StoreKit messages now use localized copy. We also updated the audio session API and added regression tests for English UI and microphone permission handling. Existing subscriptions are preserved.
