## What is NomadMates?

NomadMates is the map and meetup app for people who travel. See where your mates are, meet people in every city you land in, and carry your whole travel life in one place.

YOUR MATES, YOUR MAP
- See your mates scattered across the world, or grouped by city.
- Set how precisely each person sees you: country, city, or a rough block radius. Your raw GPS never leaves your phone.
- Get a heads up when you and a mate land in the same city, then flip on Available to Meet.
- Find people you may know through the mates you have in common.

MEETUPS AND CITY LIFE
- Create a meetup in seconds, for your mates or the whole city.
- Join what is on where you are: dinners, hikes, coworking, nights out.
- Every city has its own group chat. Drop in before you even arrive.

VENUES
- The group chat for your hostel, coliving or coworking space, without the WhatsApp chaos.
- See who is staying, message the venue, and find what is on.

NETWORKS
- Bring a whole community with you: an alumni group, a nationality abroad, a coliving's past guests, a club with chapters everywhere.
- One main channel for everyone, and a group for every city and country your people are in.
- A map of where everybody is, by city. Counts only, never names or pins.
- Invite codes you control, roles for the people who help you run it, and the whole thing manageable from your phone.

STORIES AND THE GLOBAL MOMENT
- Share a story from wherever the road has taken you.
- Post your Global Moment and light up the map with everyone travelling right now.

YOUR TRAVEL TOOLKIT
- A passport map of every country you have set foot in.
- Add your passports and see where each one can take you, visa-free.
- A visa clock tracking your days, entries and expiry dates, so you never overstay.
- Plan trips, float ideas, and see which mates overlap your route.
- Split shared costs and settle up without the awkward maths.

PRIVACY AND SAFETY, BUILT IN
- Ghost mode hides you from everyone with one tap. Block means total invisibility.
- Mark places as safe zones and quietly drop off the map whenever you are there.

FREE, AND GENEROUS
The map, your mates, meetups, venues, stories, privacy controls, chat, tap-to-translate messages, trips and Splits are free, always. It holds up on bad hotel wifi too: you can see when a screen is showing older data, and it refreshes the moment you are back online.

MATES+ ($3/month, or $30/year for 2 months free)
Lifts the limits and adds the deeper traveller toolkit:
- A travellers-only room in every city, away from the usual swarm.
- Saved searches and watched-city alerts. Get pinged when a mate or event matches.
- Your arrival brief: trusted tips for a city, compiled before you land.
- Automatic translation: whole chats translate as you scroll, no tapping. Translating one message is always free.
- An unlimited personal map and shareable city lists.
- A pinned trip plan with locked dates, a meeting point and an ordered stop list.
- Recurring meetup series, templates and attendee export.
- An opt-in public profile page to share how to meet you.
- Clean CSV exports of your passport, splits and trips.
- Unlimited Splits and trips. One Mates+ member lifts the cap for the whole group.
- Extra profile photos and a Mates+ badge.
- A fourth map style you design yourself: your own accent and basemap colours, and which labels and borders show. Colour, Theme and Satellite stay free.
Cancel anytime in your store settings.

No third-party ads. We never sell your data. Your mates' locations stay your mates' business.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6.1 — 2026-08-31

The passport you share now has the whole world on it.

- The world map on your shared passport was only ever showing a slice of the planet. It shows all of it now, poles to Patagonia, with every country you have been to filled in.
- It follows the map theme you picked in Settings, so a card shared from a custom map looks like your map.
- The name and your numbers sit on the map now, with the ocean fading into the card behind them.
- A network's Where everyone is opens on a globe. It spins to face wherever most of your people are, with a dot for every city they are in, sized by how many. Tap it to open the full one and spin it yourself.
- Counts only, as always. Never a name, never a pin on a person.

Thanks for being here this early. Keep the feedback coming, we read all of it.

### 1.6.0 — 2026-08-21

Networks are here. Your community, wherever everyone actually is.

- Networks: a group you are already part of gets a home in NomadMates. One main channel for everyone, a group for every country and city your people are in, a map of where everybody is, and invite links that record who vouched for whom.
- Join with a code or a link, and see what you are joining before the code is spent.
- Run one from your phone. Create and edit groups, write your rules, upload your logo, approve who is waiting, hand out invites and promote a moderator.
- Admins can post in the network's voice, so an announcement reads as the network rather than as one person.
- Moderators can remove a message from a group they run.
- Squint now shows three photos of the same city at once. One cropped, one pixelated, one blurred. Every guess loosens all three.
- Tap any of them to see it full screen, and pan around.
- Squint follows your own date now, so the day rolls over when it does for you, not for a server somewhere else.
- Missed yesterday? You can go back and play it.
- Tag someone in a chat with @. They get a notification even in a busy group, and their name opens their profile.
- Notifications open the thing they are about, instead of just opening the app.
- Every request in one place. Mate requests, network joins and group joins now share one Pending inbox, and a request you sent can be taken back.
- Notification settings are grouped, and show only the switches that can actually fire for you.
- Open somebody's profile from Discover, a chat or an event, without being mates first.
- Messages already in your language stay in your language. Short messages no longer get mistaken for another one.
- Take a story no longer crashes on iPhones with more than one rear camera.
- The map gets your location when you open it, instead of waiting for something to move.
- The map welcomes you to the city you are in, rather than to every town you pass through on a bus.
- Saving a photo from a chat now tells you it saved.
- Pop-up sheets no longer run off the bottom of the screen.
- Signing up lets you reveal your password, and says which documents you are agreeing to.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-08-17

Squint is here. A new city every day, and you get ten percent of a photo.

- Squint: guess the city from a photo. Miss and it zooms out a bit, and an arrow points you towards the answer. Five guesses, a new city every day, and a streak if you keep coming back.
- Share your result without spoiling it. Send it to a mate in the app and they can fire theirs straight back.
- Play it on the web too, at nomadmates.app/squint. No account needed, so send it to anyone.
- Find it under the search bar on the map, or hide it there if it is not for you. Settings has your past puzzles and your streak.
- Discover suggests places in your city: where to work, eat, and go out. It fills itself in as people arrive somewhere new.
- Suggestions stay put while you look at them, and tell you why when a city is not ready yet.
- Read receipts moved off the main settings list onto their own page, with a proper explanation of what turning them off actually does.
- Signing up asks for your first name now, instead of a display name, which was quietly turning into usernames.
- The events map no longer teleports home when you switch to the list and back.
- Recentring on yourself puts you back in your own city, not the last one you looked at.

### 1.4.0 — 2026-08-13

The big one. Chat now speaks your language, and the map is yours to design.

- Tap any message written in another language to read it in yours. Free, always.
- Mates+ goes further: a whole conversation translates as you scroll, no tapping.
- Search inside a chat. Find the thing someone said three weeks ago.
- Pin up to three messages per chat, for 24 hours, 7 days, or until someone unpins.
- Share your live location straight from the chat, or drop a meeting point with a map and a time.
- Photos show up the second you pick them, with upload progress, and you can keep typing while they send. Backing out of a chat no longer loses them.
- Save any photo someone sends you, straight to your gallery.
- Satellite is now free for everyone. Mates+ adds a fourth style you design yourself: your own accent, the basemap colours, and which labels and borders show.
- Bad hotel wifi is handled properly now. You can see when a screen is showing older data, and it refreshes itself the moment you are back online.
- The chat list shows "You:" when the last word in a thread was yours.
- When you finish setting up, we ask once whether to keep your city current while the app is closed. Say no and it stays off.

Thanks for being here this early. Keep the feedback coming, we read all of it.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-11

Your city keeps itself up to date now.

- Background city updates: your mates see the right city even when the app is closed.
- The welcome to your new city hello now shows when you arrive, instead of the next time you open the app.
- After you leave a country, we offer to log the trip for you. One tap and it is in your travel history.
- Trips only count cities you actually stopped in, so passing through on a bus no longer shows up as a visit.
- Fixed the visa screen not filling in your allowed days.
- Fixed the sign-in keyboard covering the Sign in button.

---
Anyone can join now.

- You no longer need an invite code to sign up. Create an account and you're in.
- Got a code from a mate? It still works. Tap "Have an invite code?" on the sign-up screen, or scan their QR.
- Fixed a few rough edges on the sign-up flow.
