It’s been incredibly helpful. It does have one minor, if annoying, bug where the document you’re editing locks of you switch to another app and then switch back. You can no longer edit the document without first closing it (viewing the parent folder) and then reopening the document. I’m hoping to see that fixed soon, though! 😁 🤞 Fixing that and adding functional checkboxes would upgrade Notebooks from fantastic to phenomenal. ### 5/5 — One Request *2021-09-13, version 8.11.7* Love this app! This was the perfect replacement. Great features, ease of access, and all free. The system is very clear and well designed and has great organization for large projects or just some everyday notes. But a problem I’ve found is that a lot of times I accidentally delete whole pages of words after a few miss taps from fiddling around. This app need some sort of back and forth button so you don’t accidentally erase days of work. This is really preventing me from creating larger document as the longer I write on something the more chances I have to delete it. ### 5/5 — Love this app *2020-05-01, version 8.11.5* Still playing around with the app to learn how it works, one of the best writing apps I’ve had , writing a book, saving research and notes photos for my book. This is a LOT of writing. Dropbox shows the same loss now. I've searched for a contact but haven't found one. Hoping the developer will respond so that I might be able to get my writing back. I love the app. Except for this. ### 1/5 — Have to pay again? *2020-01-20, version 8.11.5* Just a few months ago, I bought Notebooks 8 including an in-app purchase for a total of $10 and now I have to pay again full price for the new version (version 10 which despite the number is the next iteration of version 8). Are you kidding me? Worse, now the new download of version 8 doesn’t even let me access the in-app purchase I paid for, as it lost its “buy more modules” section. So annoyed. Well if you’re reading this while considering to buy version 10, I suggest you stay away. Maybe you’ll have to pay for everything again in full in a few months for a new iteration that will be inappropriately called version 12.. ### 1/5 — Afraid to delete anything *2019-12-13, version 8.11.4* I thought I had a well functioning syncing machine, and it probably still is, but when I deleted a file (several paragraphs I created and edited in another file) that was somehow created, I deleted every file I had created. I managed to bring up my original file after “undoing” deletion, but it left me with doubt and distrust. I quit using it. I had recently bought the app but I feel as if I had bought a brand new car without functioning brakes. ### 1/5 — Devastated *2019-09-25, version 8.11.1* I’ve used and loved this app for a couple of years now but all of a sudden it’s just stopped working. It either crashes immediately when I try to open it or it just sits on the initial logo screen that shows when you open the app. Never had any issue with it before now. I tried restarting my phone and uninstalling and reinstalling the app which caused me to lose a good majority of what I’d written in the last couple of days — because, obviously, I couldn’t back up my files since I couldn’t open the app — and it still won’t work so I lost all that work for nothing. Absolutely heartbreaking. After that, I don’t think I could use this app anymore even if I could figure out what was wrong and fix it. Extremely saddened by this. Think I’ll stick exclusively to google docs from now on. **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. - Notebooks supports Redo in two variations: (1) if you touch and hold the undo button (on the extra row of keyboard keys) you can choose between undo and redo. (2) You can change the keys in that extra row and add a dedicated redo button. - Due to the small display on the iPhone we don't display the redo button by default. I hope that helps. Edit: The review obviously changed after I posted my first reply... There are methods to track down the reason for these crashes, like turning on Airplane mode to prevent automatic sync on a startup, for example. We always try to help our users to find out what is wrong, but for that it is important to get in direct contact with us, as we need a few more details than just the fact that Notebooks refuses to launch. By the way: even if an app does not launch, one can always create a backup through iTunes or iCloud, so there are ways to preserve its contents. ### 1/5 — Love the App but one star nonetheless *2018-12-23, version 8.10.5* Thank you for an eye pleasing app. But I was unable to unhighlight texts once highlighted. And in editing mode, I can’t highlight nor color texts. Inconveniences = minus 1 star. And lately I found that when I start a text with a bold and type, it doesnt bold the text. It’s a bug fix it. Thank you for making this app free btw. I will have to move to other apps while you fix this. ### 1/5 — Unable to transfer from previous app! *2018-09-03, version 8.9.3* Instructions say to: To migrate your documents without going through an external server, you can create an archive (or archives) of your documents in Notebooks 6, send the archive to Notebooks 8 and extract it. In order to do this you must be able to open the notebooks 6 app which will not open any longer. Ive spent money on the new app and am left high and dry without being able to recover any of my writings. ### 1/5 — Terrible upgrade!!! *2017-12-12, version 8.7.6* I have avidly used Notebooks since it first came out. I purchased the upgrade as prompted by the app in lieu of IOS 11 release. NONE of my many files came over with the app upgrade and now I can’t get to them on the old version which does not work with IOS 11 - will not open at all. Adding insult to injury I had to repurchase the app for some reason as it did not show that I had purchased it in the App Store. Additionally I have sent 2 emails via their contact sheet and no response. Hopefully this negative rating will get someone’s attention. Until then I give it a “1” since I can’t give it a “0”!! **Developer response:** I am sorry that we obviously did not receive your emails, otherwise we had responded, as we always do. - iOS 11 no longer supports older apps, and it seems you have still been using Notebooks 6, which was discontinued four years ago. Notebooks 8, the current release, cannot automatically access the documents in Notebooks 6 (which are still on your device), but we have posted migration guide that helps you restore them. Regarding the second purchase of Notebooks 8: could it be that you now have "Notebooks 8" and "Notebooks 8 for iPhone"? These are separate apps; if you just need one of them, please get in touch with the App Store team and ask for a refund of one of them. Best, Alfons ### 3/5 — Slight issue *2021-03-07, version 8.11.6* So I love that I can use this app for notes and taking notes in different aspects of my life. Issues with leaving the app(not closing) and going back and if I was in the middle of writing a note, I have to close the app completely to go back to typing in that note. ### 3/5 — It’s been great but... *2020-03-16, version 8.11.5* I’ve had this app for a while and it’s been absolutely great! However, I recently came across an issue. Whenever I’m trying to make a note, I get an error saying there is no more storage. Okay, no biggie. However, when I go to clear storage within the app and delete other apps off my phone, it still says I have no space. I really enjoy the app and don’t want to have to get another one to replace it. Is there anyway to fix this? **Developer response:** Hi, I must admit that I have never seen this type of error, so I cannot say if it refers to the storage on your device, or to the storage in Dropbox, in case you are using that? ### 4/5 — I am going to cry *2022-04-21, version 8.11.7* I have used this app for years and have written over 50,000 words on it and man I have never been this upset. I’ve recent gotten acquainted with the password feature, which is pretty useful honestly and no complaints here. I did come across a problem where my Face ID was inactive for a period of time and I had completely forgotten my password. Which is absolutely a me-problem but it was absolutely devastating when I was unable to access any of my works. So, naturally I checked the website and troubleshooting to see if there was any way to fix this. There was not. So, I tried to see if deleting the app would give me an opportunity to reset the code(I update most of my works on other things just to be safe), it did, but at the loss of all of my works. Overall a great app, I am still a bit worked up though and would definitely appreciate it if there was any sort of recovery for the password, but that is just my two-cents. **Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback.I am sorry to hear that the passcode protection caused troubles ... but making documents inaccessible is the purpose of protection. If you had emailed us before you deleted the app, we could have helped you recover your passcode. I have tons of information that was scattered everywhere until I downloaded this app. I use version 8, which is the free version. I have set up folders and sub folders where I track maintenance on my vehicles, when I replace tires, batteries and etc. I have files with part numbers for my appliances, lawnmowers and etc. I think you get the idea. Then I started worrying about losing all my files if the app crashed or something. I back it up using drop box to my iPad. I hope this app never goes away. It’s as customizable as you would want, and perfect for simply documenting notes and nesting them in folders…up to writing an entire book, delineating it chapter by chapter. Absolutely perfect. Thank you for adding this feature. ### 5/5 — Very disappointing UPDATE: they helped *2022-09-19, version 8.11.7* Edited and Updated: It's a wonderful concept that's beautifully constructed except for the fact that you can't switch between apps without having to exit the entire document and reopen it. What????? Seriously? Let me paint you a visual: I'm trying to take notes from a picture I'm looking at. I want to make sure I use the correct wording. I am switching between the app and my internet browser on my phone to see what I want to type out. When I go back into notebooks, I can't edit the text anymore. It acts like I decided I'M ALL DONE NOW! So I have to exit the document. Reopen it from scratch. Now I can type again. This is just plain dumb and for someone who doesn't have the greatest memory it became really tedious to reopen and close and reopen and close and reopen and close. I probably did it between 7 and 9 times just to get the sentence I needed. I love this app but I am almost tempted to stop using it solely because it creates more work than necessary for me. Other apps will allow me to do this with no hassle whatsoever. Do better notebooks. Update: THEY CONTACTED ME AND THEY DID BETTER! 😂 there is a newer version they referred me to! I can't believe I actually got a response, and it was a helpful one too. Developer is responsive and is one if the few that actually responds to app reviews. —— The ‘Sharing’ features are outdated. Like iTunes sharing! Needs to support Apple Files! Seriously! It's exactly what I need. I love the way it doesn't try to do everything but do nothing well. It does very well what it does. And it does exactly what I need. It's a really great app. Very few bugs get in the way. The IU is sumple and intuitive. The developer has always been responsive to emails. I've emailed several times in 6 years and always gotten a response within a day or two. And no lame responses yet! But the devs here really did a good job. Flexible, fast and many customization options. Just good flow overall, and pretty UI. No ads.
