Eat your own dog food kids. ### 2/5 — Missing person alerts… *2024-08-01* The system itself is incredibly helpful, but it seems like the missing person alert being in the required category is holding the whole app hostage. I hate to say that because I don’t want it to seem heartless, but in a city impacting tens of millions of people per day, the focus of specific individuals going to all of our phones as a citywide emergency seems political or personal. which unfortunately is inappropriate for the purpose of this app which can save many peoples lives at once as opposed to crowd, sourcing an entire city to solve individual cases. Additionally, in the app, which I downloaded to circumvent the email frequency, it doesn’t even include a picture of the person in the app. I was literally going to unsubscribe from the emails so that I could not have it pop up across all of my devices simultaneously when I get an email alert and just have it limited to my phone screen, but even if trying to help on the phone, you have to open each individual missing person and then find the image link to click. ### 2/5 — Can’t navigate app when open *2024-04-05* The alerts come in fine, but whenever I get into the app itself whatever the most recent pop up is won’t go away no matter how many times I hit the “dismiss” button, making it impossible to use ### 2/5 — Why is this app sooooo bad?! *2023-12-17* This has got to be one of the worst apps i’ve ever used. Why can’t NYC get their act together to make even a simple app like this not be a broken piece of junk? The requirements are so simple: 1. Provide alerts 2. Allow users to choose which alerts they receive 3 Allow users to share important alerts with others It fails on all three points. Yes it provides alerts but they arrive over and over, and there are annoying pop ups in the app. Yes it allows you to select which alerts but it requires you to receive some of them. Why? If i’m opting into the app don’t force me to receive any of them. And most important of all, why is there no share button on the individual alerts? If i know a flood is coming i want to be able to send the alert to my neighbors. But no, there’s no way to do it! ### 2/5 — Alerts *2023-07-05* Sort out the alerts. Anytime I can go into the app, the alerts continually pop up, not allowing me to read any other messages. ### 2/5 — Too many alerts *2023-02-14* It would be a useful app but although you can select alerts relevant to you, there are some you can not turn off, like “missing persons”. This means the app becomes yet another annoying distraction, constantly chirping for your attention. I had to delete it. ### 2/5 — Too many alerts *2022-12-26* They allow you to select the type of alerts but “Emergency Alerts” are required. However, even tho I only get Emergency Alerts, I often get 5 alerts a day for stupid non-emergency stuff like “Get your COVID booster” and other reminders. The people who run this app and send our alerts need to make sure that Emergency Alerts are true emergencies and not just public service announcements, or segregate those into optional notifications. Also, we should have an option to receive amber/grey alerts. ### 2/5 — Ignores Notification Settings *2022-12-03, version 2.2.3* Loved this on Android. Switched to iPhone and it ignores my notification settings. I’ve specifically asked it not to tell me about traffic disruptions because who cares about cars. And I keep getting them anyways. ### 3/5 — Popping up *2021-12-19* The app is great! It helps you know about all important things in NY! But when I click on my notification it brings me to the app and when I press ok it it just keeps popping up! One can not do anything within the app unless the boxes are removed. There are two options,“ok” “details”, within the boxes to remove these notifications. It is sad because this could have been such a vital safety tool for New Yorkers. ### 1/5 — Drains Battery *2024-07-07, version 2.2.7* This app uses about 30% of battery running in the background, and if it’s not running in the background you won’t get alerts. Sends way too many alerts to the point where i want to turn it all off. Last night this stupid app woke me up at 3:30am to tell me it’s going to snow in two days. Why do i need to know that at 3:30 am?!!! And giving feedback is pointless because they’ll never update it. ### 1/5 — Uses a ridiculous amount of battery *2023-07-09* A recent update of this app has caused it to start using huge amounts of battery in the background. During an hour drive today it was responsible for 82% of my significant battery drain with 45 minutes of background activity (according to battery performance report in settings). ### 1/5 — What a waste *2021-09-17* What happened to this app? Worked fine up until 2 weeks ago when the notifications for ASP from 9/3 to 9/8 came up and never left. You try to tap it away and it stays there, incessantly popping up like a subway preacher at 8am. Get it together, people. However every time I open it up I get hundreds of notifications of city bus suspensions from three months ago and no matter whether you click “details” or you click “close,” it just keeps popping up.It would be nice if it alerted you of police activity or vital things in your neighborhood. It would be great if you could set your neighborhood for living or working so you don’t receive city wide notifications for areas you will never go to. The pop-up has one button that says OK and another saying Details. The pop-ups prevent you from navigating to notifications that you want to read. NOTIFY NYC is the official emergency notification system used by the city and can be used to calm fears, stamp out misinformation and connect New Yorkers to emergency management and city wide services! This app is on point! As an educator and community liaison I use this app daily to stay informed and help others stay informed! If you cant support the app on your phone’s software text the number 692-692 with the message COVID to sign up for SMS notifications from the NOTIFY NYC messaging system. Again Text COVID to 692692 to be enrolled in NOTIFY NYC - The NYC Office of Emergency Management’s official system for citywide notifications! Great resource to have when you can’t access the app due to lack of wifi or data services. Notify NYC will send official city updates in real time detailing any public health information related to the Coronavirus and any other citywide service disruptions. Please help us connect as many communities as possible in this time of unprecedented public health crisis! ### 5/5 — Best app NYC has published *2019-11-30* My 5-star rating is certainly graded on a curve, for city-developed apps. But it actually works and is very helpful at times, as long as the people issuing the alerts are thoughtful about what they push out. There are other apps for traffic and transit issues, but this is a good one to have for those odd alerts that you’ll be glad to have when you need it.
