## What is Number Flash?

Helps children transition from counting to number understanding.

A ten frame with dots flashes on the screen (you can choose the number of seconds it appears on the screen).
Then the ten frame disappears.
Children need to choose the number of dots they saw in the ten frame.
They can’t count because the picture has disappeared.
This coaxes them to think of a number of objects in relation to five and ten.
This helps children to use strategies to learn basic facts.

Kindergarten and 1st Grade Teachers:  Project Number Flash on a projector.
Have all the students answer with pencil and paper at their seats.

I like the concept behind this app but there is a huge design flaw.  My students quickly figured out that if they hold their finger above the last picture in the ten frame, that is exactly where the answer will be when the pictures disappear. Every time! No thinking required. I hope this will be corrected.

This app has potential as a good teaching tool.  I have some suggestions for the developer...
If particular numerals are selected for use, can an option be included for only those numerals be displayed as possible answers?  Multi-player format would be appreciated too with results saved.  Thanks for your work so far, keep the updates coming!

Kids need to build automaticity to quickly recognize a number of objects in a group.  This app provides a quick and fun way to practice "subitizing" and gain speed with math basics. You can target the numbers of objects you want to practice with.  You can also adjust the time limits. I use this app frequently in my second grade classroom with small and large groups.
