## What is Number Friends?

Number Friends is six little counting games for children who are just starting to work out what numbers mean — roughly ages three to five.
Count the bears. Put four donuts on Momo’s plate. Get three more ducks onto the bus and say how many are riding. Every game is the same shape: a friendly voice asks for something, your child taps, and the answer is a number they can see as well as hear.
Six games, one idea at a time.
Count Them! — how many are there? Tap each one and count along.
Which Has More? — bigger and smaller, before any arithmetic at all.
Snack Plate — count out exactly what a friend asked for.
Bus Stop — animals get on and off. Adding and taking away.
Frog Pond — hop forward along the numbers.
Rocket Launch — counting down, and taking away.
It listens to how it’s going. Early rounds count to five and never subtract. As your child gets them right the numbers grow and the sums arrive; a run of misses walks it back down again. Nobody is stuck, and nobody is asked for arithmetic before they can count.
A real voice, not a robot. Every line in the game is recorded — 974 of them. She counts aloud with your child, names the friends, and says the sum back once it’s solved. Nothing is read out by the phone’s text-to-speech.
Eight friends to meet. Bruno, Bibi, Hoppy, Dilly, Pip, Momo, Rusty and Pearl each turn up when enough stars have been earned, and each has a snack they love. Stars are an abstraction; two more stars and a new duck comes out of the shadow is a reason to play one more round.
What it doesn’t do
No ads. No in-app purchases. No accounts, no sign-in, no email address. No videos, no links out, nothing to buy and nowhere to wander off to.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.2 — 2026-09-07

There is now a For Grown-Ups panel, behind a times-table sum so it stays yours.

You can switch off the SHOW ME button, if your child is the sort who reaches for help before thinking. A wrong tap still gets the animals counted out loud — that part isn’t optional. And you can put the game back to its first day: no stars, the easiest questions, the friends waiting to be met again. Useful when the tablet is handed down to a younger brother or sister. It asks twice before it does it.

### 1.1 — 2026-08-27

Somewhere to stop. Rounds now come in short trips — three of them, or five once your child is playing confidently — with a dot each above the question so the end is in sight from the start. The last round finishes on a screen that asks whether to play again rather than moving straight on. The games used to run forever, which meant the only way to stop was to give up.
Who’s coming next. The star screen now shows the next friend still to be met and how many stars away they are, with the shadow lifting a little as your child gets closer. Two more stars and a new duck comes out of the shadow is a reason to play one more round; forty-three stars is not.
Friends arrive sooner. Dilly the duck now costs six stars instead of nine, so the first new friend turns up inside the first few minutes.
A hand when it’s needed. If a question has been sitting untouched for a while, a quiet SHOW ME button appears and counts the objects out loud, one bounce at a time. It’s offered, never pushed, and asking is never treated as getting it wrong.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-08-17

The narrator was silent on iPhone and iPad. She's back: every prompt, every count and every cheer is spoken again.

The number cards your child taps no longer carry dots underneath. Children were matching rows of dots instead of reading the number, which is the one thing those cards are there to teach.
