## What is NVDARemote?

NVDARemote is an app to remote control a NVDA screen reader. This app is the client software, you have to setup a seperate NVDARemote server in your network.

To use this app, you'll need an external keyboard. After the connection is established, all inputs made on the external keyboard will be forwarded to the NVDARemote server, including the special keys Strg, Alt, Windows, Esc, F1-12 and so on.

Attention: You need an external keyboard to control the NVDARemote PC. The output of TTS is contolled by the ringtone volume, not by the media volume. You have to enable the ringtone (lever on the upper left side).

## Key features

- Remote NVDA screen reader control
- External keyboard input forwarding
- Special key support (Strg, Alt, Win, Esc, F1-12)
- TTS output controlled by ringtone volume
- Requires separate server setup

### 1/5 — As of December 2023 this is not at all usable

*2023-12-10, version 1.2*

Unfortunately, this app can no longer be used. It is another example of an app which has not been updated. NVDA has grown tremendously and remains an incredibly useful tool. I wish the developer would return to activity. This app could be so handy.

### 4/5 — Issues with the app on iPad and bluetooth keyboard case

*2023-09-21, version 1.2*

This app works fairly well, but there are a few issues. First, using an iPad and keyboard case, whether that be a bluetooth one or even something like the Magic Keyboard from Apple, we don’t have access to function keys, thus making strokes like alt f4 impossible. Would be great if there was a way to do that from within the app, even with something like virtual function keys, or buttons in the app that would perform some of the more commmon keystrokes. Secondly, while basic NVDA reads out okay, I am connecting to a computer running Station Playlist, a software that is used for online radio. There is an NVDA addon for this, that makes the program read better with NVDA, but when using this app, it’s almost like the addon isn’t installed. It reads that window as if the addon were not present on the remote computer, which I find rather odd. If this could be fixed, it would be a huge help.

### 3/5 — My keyboard input doesn’t get passed

*2022-07-30, version 1.2*

I’m able to connect to a remote device with no problem, and hear speech from that device so long as I am using the remote keyboard to control the machine. But when I use my external keyboard with my phone, my phone takes the keyboard presses itself and navigates around the screen of the app. Even without voiceover turned on. I don’t know if this is an app problem, a keyboard problem, or what kind of problem. I’m using a logitech k380 and its website says it has OS specific keyboard layouts, so maybe I just need to get a plain external keyboard. Hmm. Even tried turning quickNav on and off... no dice.
Interestingly, I can get the tab key on this keyboard to work in any text field outside of the app. Interesting. Maybe there should be a specific multiline text field where input is confined to which the keyboard/phone would see as you just typing but in reality keypresses from that field are passed to the remote device? Hmmm.
Anyway, it’s a cool idea/concept, except I can’t work with the app so I give it 3 stars. I did try going to the app support website but it was in another language.

### 4/5 — Total game changer

*2022-04-03, version 1.2*

Ok, lets get the negative bit out the way, this isn’t the most intuitive piece of software, however with a bit of playing this has meant i never need to travel with my laptop again. I run software for a radio station and now having the ability to log in and perform basic administrative tasks from my iPad on the move is totally brilliant. I think you need to be fairly tech savvy to get this to perform correctly, also i couldn’t find any keyboard shortcuts to instantly start interacting with the remote machine, seems i had to come out the remote app then back in to make this work, however a truly excellent app for my needs.

### 4/5 — Developer please respond

*2022-01-28, version 1.2*

Hi, I like this app. Is very cool. I’m surprised it has come it’s way to iOS. There’s one thing that is a bug. Don’t know if it’s a bug with the app, or something else. Basically yesterday me and my friend were playing a game, and he made a server to control to let me control his computer. When I was playing the game, which was an audio game exactly. The space bar and enter keys did not work. I don’t know if it’s a bug with the app, or something else. Please look into this.

### 5/5 — Amazing app. Just one suggestion that could make it better

*2022-01-11, version 1.2*

The app is actually very good and it’s entirety. One thing that I think could make it better is if you could push the clipboard of what’s on your iPhones clipboard from VoiceOver, over to the NVDA remote computer you are controlling, just like you could do with a regular computer controlling another computer.

### 3/5 — Please make it work with m1 macs.

*2021-12-02, version 1.2*

Please make this compatible with m1 macs. For the mac, there is no ringtone volume. I can connect just fine, and can tell that my keystrokes are making it through, but no speech on the mac.

### 2/5 — Omg!

*2021-10-10, version 1.2*

Can anybody add a simple action to simply start reading?! Just add a button “start reading” and “stop reading” PLEASE!

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.4 — 2025-01-27

Speech output now works again via TTS, but currently the speak rate slider has no function, I'll try to fix that with the next version. The main thing is that TTS works again

### 1.3 — 2025-01-19

My New Year's resolution this year was to become more active in app development again - so here is a completely new version of NVDARemote. The overlay still looks pretty much the same, but everything in the background is completely new. I hope to have fixed old bugs as well. If not, feel free to open a bug report!

### 1.2 — 2021-07-31

Thanks to all who reported bugs and errors! You found one too? Then post it preferably on GitHub (EscolarProgramming/NVDARemotePublic) or send me an email to kontakt@mjs-soft.de

In this version I fixed a few bugs that could cause the app to hang or crash. I also improved the key layout.

### 1.0 — 2021-07-12

No release notes.
