I see many other users asking for the same thing! I would like to mute or disable push notifications for earthquake events that do not pose a threat. Push notifications should be reserved for warning about **legitimate tsunami danger** (otherwise the user will disengage from the constant pop-ups, which defeats the purpose of the app!) If this can be implemented, it would be a five-star app! ### 3/5 — Great app - but the alerts are a problem *2022-01-11, version 2.3.1* I really appreciate the care that went into designing this app. What drives me nuts is getting an alert on my phone for distant earthquakes that “do not pose a threat.” It is especially bothersome at night. Would love to see an update with either NO audible alert for earthquakes that don’t pose a tsunami threat, or the ability to choose whether to get alerts for nonthreatening events. ### 2/5 — Excellent app but doesn’t work with iOS11... *2017-10-30, version 1.3* I used whenever I went to the Oregon or Washington coast to stay. It’s simple and excellent. (5 stars.) Or was. Now it doesn’t work at all with iOS11. :( (-3 stars) Hopefully the developer will be able to bring it up to date. I use hybrid to see where the affected businesses, healthcare facilities, schools, etc are. As a preparedness coordinator it allows me to show my colleagues where their sites are in relation to the tsunami zones. Nice tool. ### 3/5 — A great start! *2013-02-15, version 1.2* The app does a fair job of mapping the danger regions. Good to know I'm just outside that major area for a tsunami. Hiwever, the app is NOT built for the iPad (SHAME) and it very ugly when used on one. The maps also redraw VERY slowly. I'm on a 20MEG DSL line, so it's not my end. Good start. Let's see how it grows up. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — It used to be trustworthy. *2025-08-01, version 2.6* I would give it a 5, but during the last tsunami warning, the app falsely gave the all clear for about half an hour, even though on tsunami.gov the warning was still in effect. The app came back up with the warnings again after about 30 minutes or so. In that 30 minutes we decided not to evacuate. Luckily the tsunami was still way out at sea, and several hours until it would make landfall. We ended up evacuating. This was my most trusted app, and now I’m not so sure. ### 1/5 — Stop nonsense notifications! *2022-01-16, version 2.3.1* Every hour on the :30, I’m being notified the Tonga tsunami warning for the PNW is canceled. So far today, I’ve gotten *19* notifications. I installed the app and went to the bulletins sections and inadvertently tapped on it. It pulls up the keyboard and froze. Only way out was to delete the app and reinstall. Great idea and 95% there but still has some bugs ### 1/5 — Not quite ready for prime-time *2012-03-21, version 1.0* I applaud this effort to put information about tsunami danger into the hands of more NW residents, but the application does not seem to work as intended. From the descriptions, I would expect to see a map with colored areas representing tsunami hazard zones. Instead, all I have is a map. No amount of tweaking with the settings lets me see any sort of tsunami hazard info. When I inadvertently tapped the locator icon, iPad asked my permission to allow the app to use my current location, but because I was in the Willamette Valley at the time I didn't allow it. That was my mistake, but now there is no way to enable the feature. Tapping the icon doesn't give me another opportunity to allow the location feature, even after closing the app and restarting. Perhaps this will time-out and I'll get another try, but it would seem wise to give some method to address this. It's also surprisingly easy to get lost. By that I mean that the map tends to jump wildly when switching between apps, even when only using icons to switch apps and not swipe gestures. I ended up looking at South America, and on another attempt the program opened with a blue screen......which I presumed to be ocean. Pinching down brought nothing into view, so I decided to scroll one direction. After a while I found land. It was Spain. That ought to be a place safe from Pacific tsunamis. That simple assumption is more useful than the lack of any useful data I've managed to get from the app so far. I really hope that more development will be put into this app, as it could ultimately save thousands of lives. I turned off sound for thesein IOS Settings, but they are still useless and annoying. The app should provide a way to filter out alerts for earthquakes more than a specified distance away from my location, and earthquakes that cause no tsunami risk for my location. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Wonderful Resource *2025-01-16, version 2.5* In emergency management we always tell people to have multiple ways to get credible information and alerts. So glad this resource exists to have tsunami information in the palm of my hands. ### 5/5 — Very useful *2021-07-09, version 2.3.1* My local map even shows the creeks correctly on and near our property. It is a wetland and they have changed over the years - this one is up to date. It shows a tsunami from a local earthquake going much higher than we thought it would, up the creeks to over 70’ elevation! This has changed where we need to plan to go to get out of the inundation zone. A feature I like is being able to enter an address or your current location as a marker on the map. A pop up will tell you which zone you are in. You can edit labels for the markers. I wish I could find a way to delete markers I put in by accidentally touching the screen, though. I rated it 5 stars despite this because it easy to use, and provides so much trustworthy information which could save lives and suffering. ### 5/5 — Love this App *2020-06-29, version 2.3* So glad that it has updated so that I can use it again!! ### 5/5 — Great PNW tsunami alerting and hazard map app *2020-05-12, version 2.2* This is the only app that provides you with the most up to date tsunami hazard areas for OR and WA. Great for people who live, work, or play on the coast. SUPER COOL new feature also sends you tsunami alert texts. Nani’s got me the tsunami alert 4 minutes faster than other mechanisms I’m signed up for. This app is also more easily accessible to more users than the national weather service one but provides the same authoritative information. Great app! ### 5/5 — OR, WA Tsunami hazard zones on your phone *2020-01-14, version 2.0.3* Everyone living along or visiting the Oregon or Washington coast should have this app. It shows tsunami inundation zones, evacuation routes, high ground, and assembly areas. I use it every visit to the coast to check local inundation zones and fastest route to high ground. Use it to plan your family’s evacuation strategy and safe meeting place. Note that roads will likely be jammed with cars and the fastest route will likely be on foot. ### 5/5 — Excellent *2019-07-29* A complete re-development of the original app. More responsive and more capabilities. The app allows the user to locate themselves anywhere along the Oregon/Washington coast and determine where they are relative to mapped tsunami evacuation zones. The bugs mentioned in the few reviews must have been fixed as it works perfectly for me. I tested it out while camping at the coast in Nehalem Bay State Park and it worked flawlessly; specifically, the "entering and leaving tsunami hazard area" signs matched perfectly with the map as we were driving up and down the coast. Regarding current location: go into settings>privacy>location services and select "on" for this app (scroll down to find it in the list). I love the "center map to location" function in settings. It allows you to scroll/swipe ahead to plan your route, but then automatically snaps back to your current location. Room for improvement may include the brochure links in Tabs. They should be updated to display the latest 2nd generation maps; the few that are currently available at least (e.g., Nehalem Bay). Looking forward to future updates... ### 4/5 — One fix could make this so much better *2022-03-31, version 2.3.1* I live on the edge of an inundation zone, so I was delighted when this app was released. It's the kind of app that could really save lives in my community and so many others, and I'm incredibly grateful for the science and expertise behind it. Here is something that would be a game changing improvement on the current build: how about sending an audible notification ONLY when the alert does not specify that there is no threat? That way, I don't have to chooose between getting a potentially life-saving alert and getting wakened on the regular by non-threatening events. I am not sure if there is an upside to waking me up only to read that something does not pose a threat.
