WHY NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE FORECASTS Most weather apps license their data from private vendors who re-process it through their own models. NWS Weather goes to the source. The National Weather Service is the United States government's official forecasting agency — the same meteorologists, at your local Weather Forecast Office, who issue the country's official watches, warnings, and advisories. Their forecasts are made by professional human forecasters, updated around the clock, and provided to every American as a free public service. No middleman, no proprietary "AI forecast," no paywall — just the authoritative government forecast for your exact location. PRIVATE BY DESIGN Your weather is nobody's business but yours. • No account. No sign-up, no email, nothing to log into. • No tracking. No analytics SDKs, no advertising, no third-party trackers. • No server of ours. NWS Weather has no backend of its own — your device talks directly to government weather services. We never receive, see, or store a copy of your location or anything you do in the app. • Your location is used only to fetch your forecast, and goes (rounded) straight to the government's public weather API — never to us. BUILT ENTIRELY ON PUBLIC DATA Every number in NWS Weather comes from a U.S. government or public source: the National Weather Service (api.weather.gov), the EPA (AirNow air quality and UV index), and NOAA (radar and forecast map layers, plus climate normals). No private data vendors, ever. A NOTE ON COVERAGE Because NWS Weather is built on National Weather Service data, it covers the United States and its territories. Download NWS Weather. ## Version history (last 4 releases) ### 1.1.3 — 2026-08-30 iPad layout The locations list used to sit permanently beside your forecast, taking up half the screen on smaller iPads and pushing the weather off-centre. It's now a proper panel: side-by-side in landscape where there's room, and a tap-away overlay in portrait, opened from the button in the top-left corner. Rotating, resizing and Split View all behave correctly. Severe-weather alerts Tapping an alert notification is more reliable — it now waits for whatever's on screen to finish before opening, and it reaches the right city even if you're mid-swipe or resizing the window. Performance Launches are quicker, the app makes fewer duplicate requests to the weather service, and the animated backgrounds no longer rebuild themselves while you swipe between cities. ### 1.1.2 — 2026-08-18 This version includes some bug fixes and adds iOS time sensitive notifications for urgent weather notifications. ### 1.1.1 — 2026-08-11 See where your weather actually comes from The bottom of each city page now names the station reporting your current conditions and how far away it is — often further than you'd expect — along with the size of the forecast grid square your forecast describes. Tap Learn more for the full explanation, including links to that station's recent observations and to your forecast office. Three timestamps instead of one A failed refresh used to show the old forecast with no sign anything was wrong. A banner now says whether you're offline, the service is unavailable, or the data is simply getting old. Your forecast office by name Attribution now reads "Data provided by NWS Chicago, IL" rather than naming the service generically. FIXES • Severe weather alerts could be missed. With notifications turned on for more than four locations, cities past the fourth were never refreshed in the background, so their alerts never fired. Every enabled location is now covered. • Tapping a severe-weather notification hours later could present an expired warning as if it were still in effect. • My Location could briefly show the previous city's forecast after you travelled. • Precipitation read "0 in" when the amount was actually unavailable.
