That is utterly ridiculous. You have to even pay to KEEP playing the FREE game Spelling Bee. That is too much. I’m never going to pay to play word games and no one should have to. ### 4/5 — New glitches *2026-08-26, version 6.39.0* I wish the app developers would get back to basics. The app now freezes on occasion, shuffles in Spelling Bee can cease to produce shuffled letters. And many times, the app just becomes unresponsive. Connections makes me a little crazy, sometimes there is no rhyme or reason to it, at least not in my mind. I play the new scrabble game with 2 friends but mostly stick to words with friends. I used to play a few other NYT games but they didn’t hold my interest. The crossword and midi are good, sudoku and the domino thing aggravate me. I miss vertex. Spelling bee might be my favorite. ### 3/5 — great when it works *2026-08-24, version 6.39.0* way too often i get nothing but a spinner once i choose a game. this makes it impossible to maintain a streak. i try to play wordle and connections every day. it's VERY frustrating when it will not load either one of them successfully. ### 2/5 — Update *2026-08-22, version 5.42.0* It won’t let me update it with the version I have ### 4/5 — Annoying re-picking when puzzle is in progress *2026-08-21, version 6.38.0* After periodic updates, the program makes you start all over again at the beginning screen, even if you have a puzzle in progress and just want to resume. It’s annoying. It places you at your resumed puzzle then all of a sudden takes you back to the start of pick a game. It didn’t used to do this. And it happened repeatedly after updates,that sometimes fix it, but more often than not, do not. You need to fix it. It gives me a headache to be suddenly jerked around like that. And it’s a waste of time for all the users in the world that play this. That should be enough reason right there to fix it; if you cared. ### 3/5 — Glitchy *2026-08-21, version 6.38.0* The games are great but the app is glitchy and poorly administered. The games take a long time to load. Sometimes I cannot even access them due to subscription notifications and I have to restart my phone. ### 2/5 — Connections *2026-08-21, version 6.38.0* Not impressed with the stretch they make on some matches. Dragonfly, Oxford, pigment, ratchet, all starting with Chinese zodiac animals? Those words have no connection, ox, pig, dragon, and rat do however. ### 3/5 — Can't x out to see solved mini *2026-08-20, version 6.38.0* Love a lot of the games, but the app is glitching with the mini where once finished I can't hit the x in the top right corner to view solved puzzle. Two things bug me now: 1. It asks for a review every time you complete the daily crossword. 2. Hints don’t open in the NYT app anymore, so it’s hard to go back and forth if it’s a particularly tough puzzle. Once you’re taken to the Congrats page, there no getting back to the crossword. The X at top right doesn’t do anything. Now I just pause before putting on the final letter because that’s the only way I can actually review the game. It’s been like this for months. A little surprised no one managing the Games app is on this. ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Version 6.36.0, 6.36.1, 6.37.0, 6.38.0 & 6.39.0 *2026-08-26, version 6.39.0* Your Sudoku has not worked correctly under any of these, it is basically unplayable as it does not correctly tell you if a number is placed correctly, only when you run out of spaces that you can see that the game still is not working correctly even after multiple updates. Try looking at your feedback on this App Store as you are losing subscribers as it appear that you cannot be bothered to fix anything. Each update makes it worse. For a while I could play most of the games for free. Then they added ads. Fine. Then they added paywalls for games. Absolutely not. Either let me play the games supported by ads or I just won't play. And now I can't play ANYTHING without creating an account and logging in? What a joke. Probably making a fortune harvesting our data all for some 5 minutes games with poor app design. Soon enough everything will be behind a paywall and still have ads and need an account. Wish they hadn’t taken away the platform for acrostics. Wish they brought back the triangle puzzle. It is similar to Tiles in feel, but more fun. Most importantly, I wish the daily Spelling Bee included all proper words, left out “cutesy” word like “lite” and “nite”, and did NOT eliminate even basic high school science terms.
