### 5/5 — Amazing game!

*2025-02-24, version 2.3.8*

I played this after Air Defense and Air Offense Command because those 2 were great and this game has the same author so I said to myself that I have to try it! And it was a great decision, this is once again very special among mobile games because it has much higher quality content than 95% of other games. I recommend all three!

### 5/5 — Amazing game

*2025-02-23, version 2.3.8*

Underrated. I hope to see more updates or maybe even another game like this

### 5/5 — Darklands Successor?

*2025-01-29, version 2.3.8*

I cannot say how overjoyed I was to find this game completely on accident. This has been the closest to a darklands sequel I have found while not as in depth that is not necessarily a bad thing. It has taken on a unique flair of its own with different combat styles that change as you level up. Truly I can’t wait to play more there are too few of these text based rpgs and the author has my gratitude for giving this the effort he has.

### 5/5 — Sadly underrated game

*2024-11-20, version 2.3.8*

This game needs way more attention. Its incredibly fun and each encounter feels genuinely tense, since you know that losing a fight can lead to losin everything. I also really enjoy the unique quests in the game, and the expanded edition is definitely worth it.

### 5/5 — Peak

*2024-11-15, version 2.3.8*

Really in depth and fun

### 5/5 — The best game

*2024-10-08, version 2.3.8*

I think I gave this game a bad review previously. Blame the player not the game. I didn’t know what I was talking about. This game has classic hex crawls, turn based battles, clever game mechanics regarding your players longevity. Seriously one the best games on iOS ever. You just need to play it and see what it’s about

### 5/5 — Literally unforgettable

*2024-07-27, version 2.3.8*

I haven’t found another grid based rpg on mobile that has compared to this.

### 4/5 — Good

*2024-07-19, version 2.3.8*

Good game but needs so much more colour coding can't tell if the symbols are decorative or interactive

### 5/5 — Hidden Gem

*2024-07-02, version 2.3.8*

this game is absolutely amazing kinda reminds me of wartales

### 5/5 — Classic

*2024-03-05, version 2.3.8*

Classic RPG. No crybaby’s allowed.

Bought expanded version. Hope developer expands this. I will purchase updates as this developer is someone I want to sponsor.

### 4/5 — Good classic rpg

*2024-02-19, version 2.3.8*

It’s a good RPG with a simple three class combat system and unique companions that provide their own bonuses and backstory like Fallout, but lacks a storyline or goal to have you do anything. The weapon and equipment are a bit lacking in variety, and you can easily afford endgame equipment early in the game since theyre easy to come by and the trading system makes the price costing less than 100 most of the time. The resolve system where characters would quit when losing all resolve is okay, but the game lacks ways to regain resolve which leads to you losing more resolved you can keep up with and you end up losing characters since they lost all of their resolve after a few fights.

### 4/5 — Truely outstandingly

*2024-01-17, version 2.3.8*

I’d give a 5 star if the middle game part has more content not just grinding for goals and money

### 5/5 — Супер!

*2024-01-16, version 2.3.8*

Как в старые-добрые времена. Олды, качайте, не пожалеете!

### 4/5 — Wish could expand the update

*2023-10-26, version 2.3.8*

I played this game many times over and when he released the updated version I paid the money because it’s one of the best games I’ve ever downloaded. That said, I did appreciate the new stories and classes of hero’s (shaman and chemist), my only wish was that the desert setting was much more developed with unique quests and able to utilize the ports. I also wish the shaman was able to be upgraded like the chemist is (getting ingredients at different cities to upgrade her attack). It seems you never know what extra animal the shaman will be able to conjure and his attack is super weak so there is not an upside to having him join, additionally if one of the animals gets hit then it doesn’t count as a flawless victory. I feel like if the developer put a lot more energy into expanding the game wayyyy past its current form he could make big money with it and really satisfy the fans. I appreciate the hard work he put into the game, as I know it’s only one guy developing it, but please keep at it and go all the way! I will be a faithful player for sure!

### 5/5 — High quality!

*2023-10-05, version 2.3.8*

I have only recently started playing this game but like it a lot so far. It seems fun to play before bed in order to relax too.

### 5/5 — Excellent Game

*2023-09-19, version 2.3.7*

So glad to see this game is still being worked on, I find myself coming back to it all the time.

### 5/5 — Finally

*2023-09-12, version 2.3.7*

Beyond excited to see that this game has had an update this year. I always wondered what happened to the developer, because in my opinion this is the best game you’ve released.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Portrait mode

*2023-01-07, version 2.2.7*

Only

### 1/5 — Ok gameplay but terrible and one-dimensional storyline

*2018-07-05, version 2.0.1*

All playable and non-playable characters are male except for one woman whom was kidnaped and is unable to free herself. Besides being unappealing to most women and to all those who are aware of other genders besides the (“alpha”) male one, this game is too one-dimensional and borderline racist. Besides the natives in their central settlement, all of the natives of the land are portrayed as savage nuisances that attack your group rather than those who are being attacked and decimated by the colonizers (you cannot but play as a colonizer).

### 2/5 — Tracker

*2026-01-21, version 2.4.4*

I was about to start playing and noticed that the app tracks your location and everything else. Shocking.

### 2/5 — Confuses “difficult” with “fun”

*2024-05-19, version 2.3.8*

On paper this could be a great game, everything is there a game with great potential. The issue is that the game is extremely punishing and you can expect to lose everything you’ve worked on because the enemies become stronger much faster than you. I wish i could rate this game higher but it’s extremely difficult and frustrating to progress. And calling players who don’t enjoy permadeath crybabies is a bit rude

### 2/5 — Ads, as usual

*2023-12-22, version 2.3.8*

It is cool, but many ads now so…

### 2/5 — Could be a 5 but it’s only a 2 …

*2023-05-29, version 2.2.7*

As an old-school D&D nerd, I thought I’d appreciate the Gygaxian element of “perma-death.” Turns out, it really sucks. I build up this awesome party, but I never get more than an hour into it before some stupid random encounter TPK’s me and I have to start over from the beginning.

And I’m really getting tired of playing the same levels over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over to get there …

Now if they lost the perma-death … and if they rejiggered the map movement so it wasn’t one single hex at a time (that part’s mildly annoying on the world map; it’s a downright tactical nightmare at the combat level, where each character can ONLY move one single hex — and they also MUST move one single hex, they can’t hold action until they hit a certain level) …

If they lost the perma-death and fixed the map movement, this game would be an EASY 5 out of 5. Maybe even a 6.

The style is awesome. The look and feel, and all the classic old-school warm fuzzies it give me are awesome. I love the 8-bit!

The STORYTELLING and the CHARACTERIZATION in all the PC templates and the NPC side jobs, believe it or not, are really engaging and a lot of fun to read — feels like there’s actually a world unfolding here!

The economy mechanics of exploring the map, picking side jobs, earning loot, upgrading weapons … all very intuitive, easy to play, and yet still very diverse. And they did make the right call going with hexes, not a square grid.

The game’s got a lot of great things going for it!

But that damn perma-death and the one-hex-at-a-time combat movement …

It just kills it. :(

### 2/5 — Slow paced and boring.

*2022-11-17, version 2.2.7*

All the mechanics are there. It’s just uninspired and just not interesting. It’s way too limited to be any serious fun, strategy nor tactical. Not really role playing. But after a while it’s so what.

### 2/5 — “Crybabies” will not enjoy

*2021-03-18, version 2.2.5*

First off, it’s seems pretty crappy to me to call people who do t enjoy permadeath “crybabies” right off the bat. Doesn’t exactly engender much love for the game.

Second, I don’t really get what the point of the game is? I played around for a while, but only seemed to be taken in circles around the map, doing jobs, buying supplies, over and over again, until eventually my party died and that was game over... Which really made the whole experience feel like a complete waste of time, which the aimless gameplay had already been feeling like.

Not a fan.

### 2/5 — Pasting from text messages

*2021-03-11, version 2.2.4*

Why is Occidental Hero’s presenting me with a prompt that says “Occidental Heroes pasted from messages” if I switch between texting and the app? Not a good look I am open to explanation

### 2/5 — Impossible to succeed

*2020-04-24, version 2.2.2*

Game is well made and entertaining, but there is no way to progress.

The only way to win the game is to 1. Complete your characters life goals and 2. Retire your players with enough money. There is a problem with each of these. You don’t know what their goals are until you find individuals in game that they interact with ( I can’t find them) and you have no idea how much your characters need to retire. I know 500 gold each isn’t enough.

The villains are inconsistently leveling up as your characters do, meaning a bear you easily beat before can one hit your level 4 character. It makes the game incredibly frustrating. I’ve lost three parties of players in the 3 days I’ve played and I’ve played.

I’m done with this game.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — This is a fantastic game

*2026-05-01, version 2.4.4*

I’ve been playing this on and off for years and there’s nothing else like it mobile, I wish we got a sequel or some content updates but it’s very good for what it is.

### 5/5 — Amazing Game

*2026-04-28, version 2.4.4*

Great game I think it would be cool if we saw a way to include a musketeer or something like that maybe a new type of technology due to the colonization of the occident

### 5/5 — Brilliant game - give the dev your money!

*2025-11-24, version 2.4.3*

I’ve reviewed it before and I’ll review it again. Perfect game for IOS. Full of depth, great writing/storytelling through action. Multiple ways of solving problems. Combat is challenging. Even when I think I’ve got it mastered with lvl 12-20 characters I still end up dying! I’m currently pushing for 100% completion and it is a real challenge! New update is great and I hope new maps are added in future. I paid again for the update and 100% worth it. I haven’t been able to activate the challenges section yet. Getting 100% completion is a big time commitment, but when I get there I’ll let you know how it is. Has an old school D&D feel to it with mild magical elements.

### 5/5 — Amazing game, suggestions???

*2025-11-12, version 2.4.3*

I love this game, just thinking how much better it’d be if there was more to do.

I’d love if you could get a dog as a companion that can help in battle but obviously you have to be careful it doesn’t die

Also I feel like a bigger map would be amazing, it gets a bit repetitive at times, even if I had to pay for it I would.

Maybe even in the future you can work your way all the way up to being a king or something

More gladiator fights would be awesome as well after you’ve finished doing them bc I did that when my people where still like lvl 3

### 5/5 — Fantastic game!

*2025-10-25, version 2.4.3*

I never leave reviews but I’ve been playing this game for years and it is one of the best games I’ve ever played, it’s easy to learn but difficult to master I love everything about this game! Thank developers for making this gem of a game!

### 5/5 — Amazing

*2025-10-16, version 2.4.3*

Best game I have ever played on the app store. Easily sunk 40 hours into runs and still enjoy starting over.

Thank you!

### 5/5 — Really Fun

*2025-10-13, version 2.4.3*

My only concern was if the content was lacking. Its great.

### 5/5 — Absolutely Wonderful Game

*2025-09-16, version 2.3.8*

This game is one of my all-time favorite games, not just on mobile but out of all games on all the platforms I’ve played on. The gameplay loop is fun, the game is difficult enough to make any encounter thrilling and intense without being so hard as to kill my enjoyment. Permanent character death means that the stakes are high no matter what you’re up against. The game saves in real time which makes it very easy to pick up and play during any spare time and your adventure carries on seamlessly between sessions. The only criticism I can muster is that after a time the radiant quests become somewhat stale once you’ve played for a while and done all of the unique quests, but the game is still a blast despite that minor issue. As far as I know the developer is still actively making content for the game to alleviate this issue. The game contains 1 paid expansion at the time of writing this review, and for all that it adds it is easily worth the price for all the time you’ll get out of it. Overall this game is a masterpiece that I would recommend to anyone I meet regardless of their gaming experience.

### 5/5 — Retro Awesomeness

*2025-06-14, version 2.3.8*

So happy I stumbled across this nostalgic strategy game. Definitely reminiscent of Kings Bounty and other similar games, which I loved growing up. Recommend 100%!

### 5/5 — Unexpected Masterpiece

*2025-03-18, version 2.3.8*

Absolutely incredible game that is challenging, unforgiving, and extremely rewarding. The depth of the world and excellent writing put this miles above any mobile game I’ve played. Can’t wait for more content!
