## What is Ocren?

A reading-notes app that keeps the passages that stayed with you, just by taking a photo.
Tap Add and the camera opens right away. Photograph the page and select the part you want. Ocren recognizes Japanese (vertical or horizontal) and English text and saves it to your shelf. No retyping.

■ Photograph a page, keep a memo
• Tap Add for the camera → select the area → the text is transcribed automatically
• From the camera screen you can also pick a photo from your library or type instead
• A passage that runs onto the next page: photograph the next page too and keep it as one memo
• Several memos from one photo: select one area after another
• The page number is read from the photo, too
• The recognized text is kept as it is; whether to correct it is up to you
• Add your thoughts (a note), the page number, and one of 7 colored flags to each memo

■ Recognition stays on your device
• All text recognition runs on your iPhone
• Neither your photos nor the recognized text are sent anywhere
• Works without a connection, even in airplane mode

■ Your own bookshelf
• Your covers stand on a wooden shelf, and you can see at a glance what you want to read, are reading, and have read
• Add books by scanning the ISBN barcode or searching by title or author
• Track each book as Want to read, Reading, or Read
• Keep memos for each book, and search the memos inside

■ So you don't forget
• Quote of the day brings back one of your memos at random
• A daily reminder delivers a passage at the time you choose
• Look back on books read, memos saved, and your progress over time in charts

■ From everyone's bookshelves
• Rankings compiled from readers' bookshelves
• See the most shelved books, the books with the most memos, the books most finished this month, and the most wanted books
• Who added a book is never shown

■ Make a quote card and share it
• Turn a favorite passage into a quote card with the book's title and author
• Use paper, wood, or one of your own photos or videos as the background (drag and pinch to frame it)
• A video background exports as a video with your card on top (the first 15 seconds). A photo can also become a 10-second video with a slow zoom
• Choose the typeface, text color, size and position, and a black or white veil
• 4:5, 9:16 (Stories) or 1:1. Share straight to Instagram, X, and more
• The photos and videos you choose never leave your device

■ Safe when you change phones
• Sign in with Apple or Google
• Your books and memos are saved to your account and carry over to a new phone

Available in Japanese and English.
Catch the moment a book moves you, right when it happens.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 2.3 — 2026-10-27

Put a line you love on your own photo or video. You can now make a quote card from any memo.
• Use paper, wood, or one of your photos as the background. Drag to move the photo and pinch to zoom
• Choose a video as the background and export your card as a video (the first 15 seconds), with or without the original sound
• Export a photo background as a 10-second video with a slow zoom
• Choose a typeface (Japanese and English sets), text color, size and position
• Add a black or white veil over the background to keep the words easy to read
• 4:5, 9:16 (Stories) or 1:1. Share your card straight to Instagram, X and more
• Shorten the text for the card without changing the memo
Open it from Share on a memo. The photos and videos you choose never leave your device.

### 2.2 — 2026-10-18

A fresh new look: your covers now stand on a wooden shelf, and you can see at a glance what you want to read, are reading, and have read.
Tapping Add now opens the camera right away. From the camera you can also pick a photo from your library or type instead.
A passage that runs onto the next page can now be kept as one memo: just photograph the next page too.
You can now make several memos from one photo, selecting one area after another.
"Passages" are now called "Memos", and your thoughts on each memo are a "Note".
Settings now has a "How to use" guide, and our support site has moved to ocren.info.
Fixed an issue where the daily Quote of the day reminder could stop arriving after a while.
Other bug fixes.

### 2.1 — 2026-10-10

"Recommend" is now "Ranking". See the most shelved books, the books with the most passages, the books most finished this month, and the most wanted books, all from everyone's bookshelves.
Book search now also finds books without a cover image.
Bug fixes.

### 2.0 — 2026-10-01

We rebuilt the app from the ground up.
• Text recognition now runs entirely on your iPhone. Your photos and recognized text are never sent to a server
• Works without a connection and in airplane mode
• Rebuilt recognition of vertical text and page numbers
• The app is now available in Japanese and English

### 1.2.1 — 2026-06-21

This update is all about a smoother experience.

• Faster text recognition (OCR)
• A more realistic, true-to-life wooden bookshelf
• A cleaner launch screen
• Better memo editing — more reliable back navigation, and the page-number field no longer hides behind the keyboard
• An easier-to-tap menu
• Various small improvements and bug fixes

We'd love to hear your feedback. Thanks for reading with Ocren!
