## Most critical reviews (5 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Post & edit abilities behind a pay-wall

*2019-11-21*

The simple handy app that developers and note-takers want. BUT, the paid subscription service to use the core features that are normally free everywhere else is a gross idea. Especially when there’s little overhead if all it’s doing is pulling data Github. You can only peek at your Gists, not post or edit.

**Developer response:** Sorry to hear you didn’t enjoy the app! Posting and editing gists is actually free forever for public gists. Thanks for trying it out though, I appreciate the feedback.

While it’s true I don’t pay for the back end services I provide, I do put a lot of time and effort into building and updating OctoNote. I’m a single developer who relies on subs to keep my apps up to date and build new features. If you have additional feedback or suggestions I’d love to hear about them - shoot me an email at aj@base11studios.com - thanks!

### 2/5 — View’s font size is unacceptable huge

*2021-01-01*

The iPad interface seems to have been optimized for making the screenshots look good in the App Store thumbnails. I’d recommend you skip this app and look elsewhere.

The thumbnail showing rendered Markdown looks nice above, but when I actually tried to use this app, I discovered it meant that a one-line Gist with a long (but not *huge*—about 200 characters) Linux command line couldn’t display the single line on the screen all at once—on a 15″ iPad! The default font size looks like it’s about 64 pt. (I say “default” meaning “the size for plain text”—you can’t modify it in the app’s settings, as far as I can see.)

When you go into “Edit” mode, the text is appropriately-sized—but it’s all unformatted. If I just wanted an app that let me edit GitHub Gists, there are plenty of those.

I can’t imagine picking a set font size like 64-point for any reason except that it makes the App Store thumbnail look nice—otherwise, the rendered example could look like a wall of text. This wouldn’t be awful if you could modify that size, but pinch-squeezing doesn’t do it and there’s no font size item in settings.

Perhaps changing the font size is a paywall feature—if so, I wouldn’t know, as I have just deleted this app.

**Developer response:** Update: Hey Trey! We just dropped an update to OctoNote that should fix your issues with the iPad layout (among many other things). If you're interested, please give it another try and let us know what you think. Thanks again for your interest in OctoNote!

### 5/5 — Inspiring to youth

*2025-12-18*

Downloaded this on my older daughter’s iPad. The interface is fantastic and very helpful as she begins her STEM journey. Very intuitive and seamless… an instrumental tool in her programmatic quiver. Not sure where we would be without OctoNote

### 5/5 — Pretty Good but doesn’t scale

*2020-06-16*

Nice and clean, does what it does well, although it’s not worth paying a lifetime subscription if it doesn’t scale.

To give it 5 stars I’d want:
 * search/filter based on filename and/or content.
 * folders (maybe based on multiple files in a single gist).
 * a convenient way to link to other gists from the editor.
 * opening a link in app to your own gist opens it in the preview/editor.
 * rename files (maybe it’s a bug, but this doesn’t seem to work).
 * work offline.

**Developer response:** Hey! Thanks for the awesome feedback! I’m taking it into consideration and will work to keep improving the app and using user input. Check out 1.2.1 to test out the initial note filtering feature. Thanks again!

AJ

### 5/5 — Great app!

As a developer, this app really helps me keep everything I need organized! Super simple and unique design. Would recommend!
