## What is ODYSSEY Atomic Orbitals?

Where are the electrons? ODYSSEY Atomic Orbitals is a 3D visualization tool for one of the most widely taught topics in the introductory chemistry curriculum: What are the size, shape, and relative orientation of the atomic orbitals? How do these properties vary from element to element? What electron configuration corresponds to which set of orbitals? The answers are now available on your iPad with the tap of a finger—state-of-the-art visualization to make a difficult subject more accessible.

ODYSSEY Atomic Orbitals provides visualization that complements the explanations and idealized pictures typically shown in textbooks. Uniquely, the app contains the results of quantum chemical calculations at high graphical resolution. The complete set of occupied atomic orbitals is available for 22 main group elements. Xenon (54 electrons) is the heaviest atom included. Intuitive gestures allow inspection of the orbitals at any orientation and zoom level. Electron density isosurfaces as well as color-coded cross sections can be examined. Multiple orbitals can be displayed simultaneously if so desired.

The full electron configuration as well as the magnetic behavior is listed for each of the included elements. In addition to showing the orbitals for specific elements, the shell structure of the atom is illustrated via a set of representative orbitals. The app also includes multiple choice questions (with randomized options), a glossary, and assorted comments.

Let ODYSSEY Atomic Orbitals be your ticket for gaining a more intuitive and visual understanding of this aspect of chemistry.

### 1/5 — Very little for the money

*2014-10-15, version 1.0.2*

I have to agree with the other reviewer who said it's not worth the money. The app presents the the electron configurations and other basic information on a selection of elements. It also presents the various orbitals scaled according to the atomic number but there's no attempt to illustrate which orbitals are occupied for example. There are a couple of short multiple choice quizzes. In short the app costs $4 for a pretty much one time use of a part of a section on orbitals. It really could be more instructive and for the money really should be. This app is just not up to par with other software from Wavefunction, inc.

### 5/5 — Great Application for High School Chemistry

*2014-03-28, version 1.0.0*

I totally understand that this is meant to be one of a series of modules. As a chemistry teacher of 45 years I see this as a great tool for the chemistry student. Atomic structure tends to be one of those topics that most chemistry students find a bit abstract. This is a good visual presentation of orbitals accompanied by a great series of questions. For both the teacher and students the price is great. The teacher, using something like AirPlay, with the iPad, could use it as a teaching tool and project it on a larger screen.

### 1/5 — Not worth the money

*2014-03-19, version 1.0.0*

Provides legitimate visuals of atomic orbitals, a glossary, and some exercises. Very limited in scope and depth. As a chemistry professor, I'm not sure if this app is actually helpful. Maybe things will change after a couple of updates, but I don't recommend it in its current state.
