Hi — I'm Steve. I'm a working actor, and I built Off Book! for myself because I was tired of scribbling on scripts and recording lines into voice memos I could never find again. Turns out a bunch of other actors wanted it too. So here it is, made by an actor, for actors. THE GIST Record your script line by line, then play it back to run your scenes anywhere — on the bus, at the gym, pacing your kitchen at 1am the night before opening. It's dead simple: • Make a Work (your play), add your Scenes, drop in your Characters, and Record your Lines. • Recorded a 30-line scene and one line's out of order? Don't you dare start over. Tap the "+" to slip a new line in, or just press-and-hold a line and drag it where it belongs. Voilà. • Scenes out of order too? Same deal — long-press and drag. Fixed. NOW REHEARSE Tap the Rehearse icon and you're in. Play the whole scene, or pick the character YOU'RE playing and flip on "Mute My Line" — the scene plays right up to your cue, then pauses just long enough for you to nail the line before your next cue rolls in. Want a little nudge? "Cue My Line" gives you a friendly *ding* right before it's your turn. And here's the good part for runaround rehearsing: playback keeps going when your screen locks or you switch apps. Lock-screen, Control Center, and headphone controls all work — so you can run lines completely hands-free. Speed it up, slow it down, loop a scene till it sticks. LINESYNC — RUN LINES WITH YOUR CAST Doing a show with other people? LineSync lets a director share a show's lines and recordings with the whole cast across phones. Invite your actors by email; they sync everything to their own phone for FREE. As castmates record their lines, the director hears them show up automatically — no nagging. LineSync is a small monthly subscription per show, paid by the director. The cast never pays a dime. BUILT FOR EVERY ACTOR Dynamic Type, VoiceOver, and Dark Mode work throughout — because the stage is for everybody. Off Book! is free with ads. If the ads cramp your style, there's a one-time "Remove Ads" tap and they're gone forever. Got a slick feature idea, or (gasp!) found a bug? I spend a lot of time in my car and use this to work on my lines when I’m driving. Also great while cleaning the house and doing other mind-numbing activities. Downside: It takes a little time playing a round to get used to it and figure it out, and depending on the size of your part, can take several hours/days to get it all recorded. Upside: This has been a game changer for me! It allows me to work on my lines while driving and I don’t have to have someone on book. Love that I can choose to say my lines with the recording, or allow a pause for me to say my line and then hear if I got it right. Thank you for this app! ### 5/5 — So Useful *2023-03-08* This app is so wonderful! I’ve used it for years to memorize my lines. It offers many options when rehearsing, such as muting lines, speed adjustments, autoplay, and much more. It makes it easy to pick what characters are in each scene and easy to edit if you need to change something. This app has been a lifesaver, and I would definitely recommend it. ### 1/5 — Line sync does not work *2022-02-13, version 4.7* This is a great app to use, but do not pay extra to use the line sync function. I would rate it four out of 5, except that I wanted to use line sync for our six person cast. It does not work, although you are still charged for it and the developer has not responded to my emails. It has been a month, my “subscription” expired but I’ve never received a response back. Very disappointing. ### 1/5 — Scam!! *2022-01-10, version 4.7* I thought this was free and would actually help with memorizing lines but the second I got it, the app had me make up scenes which wasted my time that I could have used actually memorizing lines because when the scenes were created, it said I couldn’t use them unless I subscribed and payed $30 a month! What a rip off! ### 4/5 — Very useful *2021-12-30* Overall this app is a godsend. As it has been said by many others, it is definitely clunky to set up. There has to be a better way, but since I’m not a designer I’m not gonna complain too much. I haven’t searched around for similar products, I just had this app recommended to me by a fellow actor in my show… And I’m finding it extremely useful. Please continue to improve and refine it. Even if eventually you have to charge a little for it… Please make it easier and smoother to use. But thank you for your hard work so far. ## Frequently asked questions about Off Book! ### What does Off Book! do? Off Book! is designed to help actors memorize their lines and rehearse scripts. You can create your projects, break them down into scenes, assign characters, and record lines. The app allows you to easily reorder lines or scenes and provides rehearsal modes where you can mute your lines to practice speaking them or cue them with an audible signal. ### How do I record and manage my lines? You can record lines within the app by creating your Works, Scenes, and Characters. If you make a mistake or need to change the order, you can insert a new line by tapping the plus sign or drag and drop existing lines to reorder them. Scenes can also be reordered by long-pressing and dragging them to the desired position. ### Is Off Book! free to use? The core functionality of Off Book! is free to use. However, a feature called LineSync, which allows you to share your lines with other performers, is available as an in-app purchase. This provides an option to enhance collaboration for a fee. ### What are the rehearsal features? The app offers a rehearse mode where you can play through your scene. You have the option to 'Mute My Line,' which pauses the scene at your line's cue for you to speak, or 'Cue My Line,' which provides an audible 'ding' before your line is spoken. Be cautious, as deleting a character will also delete all of its associated lines. ## Version history (last 5 releases) ### 5.3 — 2026-08-18 • Shows you direct now stay in sync across all your devices — edits published on one arrive on the others automatically. • Publish Update now warns before overwriting changes made from another device, with a one-tap Sync First. • New "Updated" badge in your Library shows which shows have changes you haven't seen yet. If a show you direct ever looked out of date on a second device, this update fixes it automatically the first time you open the app. Also fixed: a layout glitch that could scramble the Library after rotating the phone, and shows now sync fully the first time you open this update. ### 5.2 — 2026-07-19 LineSync Update - If a shared show's recordings ever go missing from the cloud, publishing an update from a director's device that still has them now detects the gaps and re-uploads your copies — so the whole cast hears the show again. ### 5.1 — 2026-07-03 Curtain up on Script Import! Typing a whole play in by hand? No longer. Now you hand Off Book! a script and it does the reading — scenes, characters, and every last line — while you go warm up. • Import a whole script.
