## What is Off The Cloud?

Off The Cloud is a home for your photos. Every shot you take on your iPhone is backed up in full quality to a small device in your own home, instead of a company's cloud. No storage plan to outgrow, no compression, no one else looking through your family's pictures.

MADE FOR PEOPLE WHO TAKE A LOT OF PHOTOS
• Every photo and video backed up automatically, in the background, as the original
• Your camera's files too, RAW included, in folders that keep earlier versions
• Find any picture in seconds: search by what is in it ("beach", "dog", "sunset"), where it was taken, or who is in it
• Face recognition is off until you turn it on, and runs only on your own device
• See each photo's camera details, and where it was taken on a map
• Albums, and a date scrubber to move through years of photos

SHARE WITH THE PEOPLE YOU CHOOSE
• Share an album with grandparents and friends as a link that expires. They open it in their browser, with no account or app, and can download the originals
• A private feed for family and friends: photos, videos, likes and comments, kept on your devices and theirs, never on ours
• No ads, no ranking, no strangers: just the people you added, in the order they posted

ONE DEVICE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY
• Give everyone at home their own account on the same device: their own photo backup, library and password
• Each account is encrypted with its own password, so everyone's photos stay private from the others
• Family members can be friends in the private feed and share photos with each other

FAST AT HOME
At home the app talks to your device directly over your own Wi-Fi, so a whole holiday's photos and videos back up quickly instead of crawling over the internet.

YOUR PHOTOS STAY YOURS
Everything is stored encrypted on your device and mirrored on two disks, so one disk failing loses nothing. Away from home the app reaches your device through our relay over an encrypted connection, and the relay keeps none of your photos. Prefer that nothing passes through us? Use it at home only, or with a relay of your own.

WHAT YOU NEED
This app connects to an Off The Cloud device: a Raspberry Pi with two disks running our open-source software. You can set up a new one over Bluetooth, straight from the app. Everything you need is at off-the.cloud.

Off The Cloud is open source: the device software and the apps are on GitHub.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.3 — 2026-10-24

• Photos you've already opened show at full size straight away when you go back to them, and the next and previous photos load while you look at one, so swiping through stays sharp.
• Remove from collection: with a collection open, select photos and take them out of it. Nothing is deleted, and Add to collection puts them back.
• If your device needs an update for something you try, the app tells you, and the person who set the device up gets an Update button.

### 1.2 — 2026-10-23

• When you add someone in Settings › Users, you now choose their first password, so their account is ready before anyone signs in. They can change it in Settings › Change Password.
• Request bridge access, on by default, gives the new person their own address, so they can use the device from anywhere and have friends outside your home.
• Settings: Users sits right under Status, actions look like buttons, and Authorize Photos Access appears only when the app can't see your photos.
• Sync Now is gone: the sync runs by itself, and Sync All and Sync From Now are still there.

### 1.1 — 2026-10-21

• Now in seven languages: English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Dutch. Choose yours in Settings, or before you connect to a device.
• After you sign in, choose what to back up: your whole library or only new photos and videos, with Wi-Fi only, videos and iCloud photos as switches.
• Free Up Space: photos and videos older than the days you choose can be deleted from your iPhone once your device confirms it has an exact copy of each. It is off unless you turn it on, iOS asks before deleting, and edited photos stay.
• Select many photos or files at once by dragging across them, and leave selection with one tap.
• When a photo is stored in more than one place, delete just that copy or every copy.
• Files: sort by name, size or date, and a Storage view that shows what takes the most space.
• In landscape, the photo viewer uses the full height, with its buttons beside the photo.
• Friends: each friend has just Block and a trash button to remove them, beside their name when there is room.
• Restart your device from Settings.
• Made for iPhone Duo, folded and unfolded.
• Fixes: Settings could freeze on some iPhones and iPads; on iPad, the sync question no longer cuts off its button and Files no longer leaves a gap above the folder path.
