## What is Ohms Terrain?

Ohms Terrain is a native iPad granular sampler and deterministic Markov sequencer. Import a sample and its real waveform becomes an immersive, playable terrain processed entirely on-device.

PLAY THE TERRAIN
• Fixed slice-orbs are the actual Markov nodes; weighted arcs connect those exact nodes.
• Create, drag, pinch, throw, and lock up to eight independent, color-coded grain-cloud halos.
• Follow each real sequencer hop with the transition firefly.
• Start instantly with three original bundled loops: Demo Loop, Drone, and Pulse.
• Choose System, Light, or Dark appearance; the Field, nodes, routes, clouds, and controls adapt together.

SHAPE AND PERFORM
• Edit up to 16 slice markers, then play with Slicer, Looper, Tape, and Keys touch modes.
• Apply reverse, stutter, speed, and scratch warp slots.
• Lock every pitch path to a root and one of six scales: Chromatic, Major, Minor, Pentatonic, Dorian, Mixolydian.
• Play from a hardware keyboard: Space runs the Terrain, R reweaves, N adds a cloud, Option–Arrow nudges the selected cloud, and 1–8 select clouds.
• Use pitch-preserving WSOLA from 0.5×–2× or Drone Horizon from 4×–32×, with Drone output capped at three minutes.
• Add filter, delay, and reverb.

MAKE CHANCE REPEATABLE
• Shape weights with the Markov map and step sequencer.
• Use a fixed deterministic seed; Reweave randomizes the map without pretending to change that seed.
• Snapshots, motion loops, and take labels persist inside saved .ohmsterrain projects; captured takes also export as durable MIDI or WAV files.
• Follow internal, MIDI, or AUv3 host tempo.

CAPTURE WITHOUT LOSING THE SAMPLE
Optional standalone microphone recording and sound-on-sound overdub begin only after a confirmation. Finished audio stays staged beside the current sample until you choose to use, layer, or discard it. Everything remains on-device.

INCLUDED AUv3 INSTRUMENT
The embedded AUv3 supports up to four clouds in compatible iPad hosts, follows the host or system appearance, starts from eight factory presets, reaches the full Field Radius range including Drone Horizon, and publishes its decisions as MIDI output so other instruments can follow the walk. Its custom view includes a quick guide, four explained travel modes, and full Filter, Delay, and Reverb editors. It generates audio, accepts no host audio input, and has no microphone path.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Ohms Terrain has no accounts, ads, analytics, tracking, telemetry, or cloud audio processing.

### 4/5 — Impressive

*2026-08-14*

Clean workflow compared to other samplers, everything feels smooth, you can make some amazing sounds with the right sample, the demo sample is funny, but that’s okay

**Developer response:** Thank you for the write-up. A workflow that stays smooth was the goal, so it is good to hear it holds up next to other samplers. Point taken on the demo sample — it is there so the app does something the moment you open it, and it does not have to stay that way. If there is one change that would make this a five, https://ohmslaw.net/apps/ohms-terrain/support reaches me directly.

### 2/5 — Crashes

*2026-08-08*

Feels really promising, but crashes way too often. Plus there is no manual? Something this deep needs a detailed manual or instructional videos. For $29.99 I expect the plugin to be fully tested before rolled out. It feels like it was pushed out before it was ready. This needs a lot more work.
Why are there non-responsive buttons when loaded as an Auv3? Clicking on sequence and both does nothing, you can’t adjust the morph slider, and you can’t tweak the effects. It really doesn’t make sense to have those in the slicer version if they don’t actually do anything.
Unless you’re able to correct these issues, I’m afraid I’m going to need to request a full refund.

**Developer response:** We’re sorry the earlier version fell short. The latest iPad release, version 1.6, adds an AUv3 Quick Guide, four working travel modes, clear setup for Morph’s second bank, editable Filter/Delay/Reverb controls, and a guard for oversized host state. If 1.6 still crashes in your host, please use the App Support link and send the host name, device/iPadOS version, and the steps immediately before the crash so we can reproduce that exact path.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.6.0 — 2026-08-22

AUv3 stability and control update: malformed or stale host state now fails silent, while valid host projects restore headlessly from MIDI. The custom plug-in view adds a quick guide, four clearly explained travel modes, full Filter, Delay, and Reverb editors, and actionable Morph setup. The Audio Unit now appears under the full Ohms Terrain name in host search. Slice markers also snap to nearby zero-crossings, Equal and Detect slices sit on the play-mode row, and the Mac remembers its output device.

Everything stays on your device.

### 1.5.1 — 2026-08-21

Portable projects: save your whole session — the sample and its exact embedded audio, slices, terrain field, clouds, motion loops, takes with their labels and favorites, effects, and performance controls — as one .ohmsterrain package, and open it on any Mac or iPad running Ohms Terrain. Projects include missing-media repair, recent projects, and automatic crash recovery. On the Mac the File menu carries New, Open, Save, and Save As (Open Project is now Command-O; Open Sample moved to Option-Command-O); on iPad the project menu lives beside the Terrain controls. The AUv3 is unchanged and never depends on a project file.

Everything still runs entirely on your device.

### 1.5.0 — 2026-08-19

### 1.4.0 — 2026-08-15

Terrain now offers System, Light, and Dark appearance. The waveform Field, ridges, routes, nodes, clouds, and controls use an adaptive spectrum palette that remains legible in either mode, and the AUv3 follows its host or system instead of forcing dark.

Microphone recording now starts behind a clear confirmation. When a mic or overdub capture finishes, the new audio stays staged beside the loaded sample until you choose Use Recording, Use & Layer, or Keep Current. A failed or discarded capture leaves the current sample playable.

The same staging protection now applies to optional Mac system-audio capture.

### 1.3.0 — 2026-08-14

Samples played about a third of a semitone flat against everything else. Ohms Terrain now starts at concert A = 440 Hz, with A = 432 Hz kept as a one-tap preset, and Bounce and Resample now capture the clouds and effects you hear instead of a dry slice montage.

Sample Brain indexes more than one folder at a time, lists every folder it holds, and reports only the matches it will actually show.

In a host: Field Radius now spans its full range, so Drone Horizon is now reachable from any host — a host that stores normalized parameter positions rescales its saved Field Radius automation, so check those lanes. Eight factory presets replace the empty preset menu, and the plug-in publishes a MIDI output, so the sequencer's decisions can drive other instruments.

Inbound MIDI is channel-aware, so two controllers holding the same note no longer steal each other's release. Scale lock adds a root and six scales — Chromatic, Major, Minor, Pentatonic, Dorian, and Mixolydian — to keep the chance engine in the key of your track.
