On first launch there was an endless spinner, but once I force restarted the app it worked. Now that I’m trying to do a crossword, it keeps not responding to taps for 10-30 seconds at a time while the timer keeps running. The concept of the app seems great, the performance bugs just need to be ironed out before I’d use it regularly ### 4/5 — Small clue box *2026-01-09, version 1.8.4* My favorite for doing crosswords. But recent update adds a zoom and direction change button that makes the text box with the clue to small! I’d like to increase that box size and font size especially for small crosswords like NYT mini and The Atlantic ### 4/5 — Terrific crossword app *2026-01-09* I used to do crosswords on paper fairly frequently, but never found an app that really resonated with me. This one does. I have only a couple of small nets to pick. The smallest is that I cannot find a way to identify the version number. That turns out to be important because there have been changes to the app that don’t seem to have been improvements, and I need to find out if I’m running the current version or not. Another is the fact that when one starts crossword, and picks a square to fill in, the crossword scrolls up to the point where it obscured the first row, and only the first row, at which point I have to pull it back down so I can fill in the first line. The last is that there doesn’t seem to be a way to simply scroll March through the horizontal clues from top to bottom or Verte Terkel clues from top to bottom. I don’t mean when the crossword is initially started, but after a significant number of squares have been filled in than one would just like to go through through all of the clues and order. The last two are a major nuisance, but I will definitely continue to use the app and recommend it to anyone. ### 5/5 — GOLD MINE *2026-01-09, version 1.8.4* Literally been searching for this all my life. Thank goodness I found this because its the PERFECT app. The layout is awesome and straightforward. No childish reward system aspect, and no annoying ads. One thing to improve might be the automatic row selection. If it was a bit smarter and looped back to words you haven’t filled out and avoided boxes you have would be a great improvement. I am more interested in the harder and/or longer puzzles from Newsday, LA Times,Atlantic or Wall Street Journal. I’ve been getting these puzzles since I installed the app a year ago, but they stopped coming in about 2 weeks ago. So the app is useless for me. Understand it’s free but so few of the puzzles are coming through. This happens more often than not. Any fixes? Why doesn’t it update for the current day? Very annoying! Why do we only get 3 puzzles daily. Is there a fix in the works? Sure hope this isn’t a political stunt, or their way to punish those of us who wish to protect our personal info, thus restrict access to the app. Free means free. It does not mean hide the fact that you’re data harvesting in pages and pages of fine print should be illegal, period. If you think you’re entitled, then say so, and be up front about it. The app developer responded the same day telling me that the navigation was adversely affected by a recent iOS update but that it should be addressed in the next app update. Today, I received another email telling me that the update was out and asking that I verify its functionality. While the timing of the update was clearly coincidental to my inquiry, the kind of personal attention shown speaks volumes about the developer. The UI is decent, but the biggest change I’d like to see is to the clue cycle controls. The arrows are so small you have to tap precisely to move from one clue to the next. It’s better if we could tap once on the entire clue box to skip to the next clue.
