## What is Oogje?

Welcome to Oogje!

Sometimes, a screen is simply convenient. We understand that. But did you know that spending a lot of time looking at a screen up close may increase the risk of developing myopia (short-sightedness)? High myopia increases the risk of serious eye problems later in life.

Oogje is the only app specifically developed to teach children aged 2 to 11 healthy screen habits in a fun way. Not by banning screens, but by motivating children step by step through rewards, positive feedback and smart reminders.

The app is based on four important scientific insights and health recommendations that help protect children's eyes:
- Keep the screen at least an arm's length away.
- After every 20 minutes of screen time, look into the distance for at least 20 seconds.
- Do not spend more time looking at a screen each day than is recommended for your age.
- Spend at least two hours outdoors every day.

How Oogje works

Is your child about to use a screen? They first open Oogje, select their account and tap Play.

Based on your child's age, Oogje determines how many 20-minute screen time sessions are available for that day.

After tapping Play, Oogje runs quietly in the background. Your child can continue using all their favourite apps just as they normally would. Gaming, watching videos, doing homework, everything continues to work as usual.

After 20 minutes, a cheerful reminder automatically appears, letting your child know it's time for an eye break. Your child taps the notification, the screen darkens and a friendly voice encourages them to look into the distance for 20 seconds. Afterwards, they can choose a sticker or, for older children, earn stars.

Is there still screen time available? Simply tap Play again and your child can continue using all their apps as usual.

Motivate instead of prohibit

Children learn best when healthy behavior is fun. That's why Oogje uses reward cards.

As a parent or caregiver, you decide:
- How many stickers are needed to fill a reward card
- Which non-digital reward your child will receive

For example, an ice cream, playing football together, playing a board game, or anything else that makes your child happy.

Healthy behavior outside the app is rewarded too. Has your child spent at least two hours outdoors? Then they earn two extra stickers.

And we'd love to see children not use all of their available screen time. If there are any screen time blocks left at the end of the day, your child earns two extra stickers for every unused block.

For parents and caregivers

Oogje takes less than 30 seconds of your time each day.

At a time of your choice, you'll receive a short daily check-in. Here, you simply indicate whether your child has spent at least two hours outdoors and whether any remaining screen time blocks were truly not used in any other way, for example by watching along with a friend or using another device.

In the parent dashboard, you can see at a glance:

- How much screen time your child has used
- Whether Oogje is currently active
- Whether eye breaks have been completed or missed
- Whether your child has spent enough time outdoors

If your child misses an eye break, you'll receive a notification.

You'll also get access to the Oogje Guide, packed with practical tips on healthy screen habits, spending enough time outdoors and protecting children's eyes.

Privacy

Your child's privacy comes first. That's why we only ask for your child's birth month and birth year. This allows us to provide the correct age-based screen time recommendations without collecting unnecessary personal information.

Free thanks to the Dutch Eye Fund

Thanks to the Dutch Eye Fund (Oogfonds), Oogje is completely free.
