## What is OpenHikes?

Record your hikes, plan your own trails and use your maps offline, on iPhone and Apple Watch. No sign-up, no ads, no tracking: your hikes sync only through your own iCloud. Open-source secure app.

RECORD EVERY HIKE
Tap record and put your phone away. OpenHikes records with the screen off, uses the barometer for accurate elevation and recovers your recording if the app closes. Control it with Siri, Control Center, the Live Activity or your Apple Watch.

PLAN YOUR OWN TRAILS
Add stops on the map or search for places. Your route follows mapped paths, so you know the real distance before you go. See springs, huts and viewpoints along the way, then save the trail and follow it.

MAPS THAT WORK OFFLINE
OpenStreetMap is the default and always free. Areas you have viewed are saved automatically and still work offline. Color your route by difficulty or steepness.

FIND NEW TRAILS
Browse hikes other people have shared nearby, and signposted routes from OpenStreetMap. Save one and follow it like your own. Sharing yours is free, and a person reviews every hike before it is published.

PHOTOS AND PLACES
Photos are pinned where you took them. Mark viewpoints, summits, water and shelters along a trail. After a hike, share it as an image with your photo, route and stats.

GPX IN, GPX OUT
Open GPX files from Files, Mail or AirDrop, with statistics and an interactive elevation profile. Export a hike as GPX, or as a ZIP file with its photos.

ON YOUR WRIST AND LOCK SCREEN
• Apple Watch: follow a trail or record a hike, even with your iPhone out of range
• Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets with your trail and progress
• A Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island

ALSO INCLUDED
• Apple Weather: hourly and 7-day forecasts, sunset times and severe weather warnings
• A warning when you leave the trail or may finish after dark
• Yearly totals, with your longest, highest and steepest hikes
• Hikes saved to the Health app as workouts (optional)

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
Photos and offline maps stay on your device. Nothing is published unless you choose to share it. OpenHikes is open source.

OPENHIKES PRO
Everything above is free. Pro adds:
• Stadia Outdoors and Stamen Terrain: hillshaded maps you can download for a whole route
• Thunderforest Outdoors: a high-contrast map that stays readable in sunlight
• Elevation where there is none: the climb, elevation profile and steepness colors for trails you draw, OpenStreetMap routes and GPX files without elevation
These services charge OpenHikes for each use. Your subscription pays for them and keeps OpenStreetMap free. Monthly, with a one-week free trial and Family Sharing.

Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless canceled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage it in your Apple Account settings.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.4.1 — 2026-10-30

Now in German
All of OpenHikes is now in German: the app, the widgets, the Live Activity, the Apple Watch app, Siri, and the privacy policy and terms. The app uses your device's language.

Wikipedia on place cards
Tap a place from OpenStreetMap, like a summit, a castle or a hut. Its card shows what Wikipedia says about it, with a photo, in your language when there's an article.

 Also in this update
• If you save a hike's line on another device, it now shows on the map right away
• Selecting a long trail no longer slows the map down
• The weather badge now sits under Search this area
• Place searches keep their results when you turn your phone
• Forecast times use the local time where the forecast is
• Offline maps show up right away and update in the background
• Fixes for Apple Watch recordings and Apple Health

### 1.4 — 2026-10-26

OpenHikes now runs on iOS 18 and watchOS 11, unfolds with iPhone Duo, and has a new icon.

• iOS 18 and watchOS 11 — any iPhone on iOS 18.4 or later can run OpenHikes now, and so can its Apple Watch on watchOS 11.
• iPhone Duo — unfold it and your hike sits in a panel beside the map. Folded, the sheet keeps its buttons across the top, Start Hike included.
• Tips for getting started — short cards point out Record a Hike, Make a Trail, the Community tab and Search this area, and Add Place and Places Nearby while you record. Each one goes for good once you close it or use it.
• A new app icon.
• Pauses stay out of your figures — the stretch you paused across, like a bus ride between two walks, no longer counts as distance, climb or steepness, and it’s drawn dotted on the map, the widget and the watch.
• A recording that followed no trail is named for the town it started in.
• A camera photo is pinned where you took it, not where you tapped Use Photo.
• Route colors blend from one stretch into the next instead of meeting at hard edges.
• Totals and time left count the climb you actually walked, each way, so walking down a trail no longer adds its ascent.
• Apple Watch: heart rate turns into a dash once a reading is two minutes old, Climb waits for heights it can trust, and pauses are dotted on the trail.
• Quicker to open with a big library, and smoother scrubbing along the elevation chart.
• Plenty of fixes: iCloud settings sync, offline maps downloading in the background, GPX files with lots of places, forecast days in the trail’s own time zone, Siri’s Last Hike, community sharing, and screens that now survive turning the phone. VoiceOver also reads Average Speed in full.

### 1.3.1 — 2026-10-21

- add Wikipedia Common images to the community search feature.
- more visible community trails with borders
- minor bugfixes

### 1.3 — 2026-10-08

• Color your route line by elevation, by difficulty, or not at all
• Share a hike as a picture: its line and figures over one of your own photos
• A full-screen photo gallery when you share
• Photos picked from your library land on the trail where they were taken
• OpenHikes Pro now fills in elevation for drawn trails, OpenStreetMap routes and hikes without heights
• Following a trail starts once you set off along it
• Fixes and accessibility improvements

### 1.2 — 2026-09-29

New places feature!

Find places, highlights, viewpoint on your trail and attach photos to them. Or create a new one on your own.

Minor fixes.
