## What is OpenReader?

OpenReader reads your EPUB books aloud and highlights each word as it is spoken,
so you can listen, read along, or both.

OpenReader uses your own account with a speech service. You need an API key
from one of these: OpenAI, Fish Audio, Microsoft Azure Speech, Speechify, or a
server you run yourself (OpenAI-compatible or Kokoro-FastAPI).

• Word by word: the page follows the voice and marks each word as it is spoken.
• Keeps reading with the screen locked, with controls on the Lock Screen.
• Download chapters to listen without a connection.
• Look up a word or translate a passage without leaving the page.
• Pick up where you left off on another device, through WebDAV storage you own.
• Your way: font, text size, margins, alignment, pauses between sentences and
  paragraphs, light and dark.

Free to download. Reading aloud is free for 30 days, then a one-time in-app purchase unlocks it for good. Reading, look-up and sync stay free.

No account, no subscription, no server of its own. Your documents stay on your
iPhone, and text goes only to the service you choose, after you allow it.

## Version history (last 4 releases)

### 1.0.3 — 2026-10-28

Fixes and improvements:
• Sleep Timer: reading aloud pauses by itself after 5 to 60 minutes, or at the end of the chapter.
• Tap Lock: while it is on, a tap on the page no longer moves the reading or follows a link. Scrolling and long-pressing a word to look it up still work.
• The player is now a compact card above the Home bar, with Tap Lock and the Sleep Timer in its top row.
• The voice you choose now applies to every book, so you no longer pick it again in each one.
• On the Download page, one Switch voice menu replaces the row for each saved voice, leaving room for more chapters.

### 1.0.2 — 2026-10-25

Fixes and improvements:
• OpenReader now runs as a full iPad app in every orientation, and its window can be resized on a Mac.
• Inside a folder, swipe in from the left edge to go back; the back button names the folder it returns to.
• Rename and Create folder keep the name you typed, not the keyboard's correction.
• Dictionary and translation remember the mode you chose, and long-pressing another word while a lookup is open looks that word up.
• Downloads are more reliable: chapters keep their Downloaded check after an update, and deleting many chapters at once no longer stops the app responding.

### 1.0.1 — 2026-10-23

Fixes and improvements:
• Contents opens the chapter you choose, not the top of its file.
• Reading aloud asks again after a brief server error, and no longer waits on a spinner when a sentence's audio cannot play.
• Play responds at once, and the Reading stops cleanly when another app takes the audio.
• Voices are chosen from a menu, with languages named in full; Fish Audio models can be chosen.
• Manage downloads can delete all of a voice's audio for a book.
• More accurate sentences in Chinese, Japanese and English.
• Your Library, settings and reading place stay safe when the phone is full or a save fails.
• A bought Unlock is kept more reliably.
