## What is OpenSky?

Knowing where it’s legal to fly your drone can be complex. OpenSky is the simplest and fastest way to view drone rules and regulations in the U.S. and Australia. Powered by Google Maps, pilots can find out where to fly their drone, plan a flight with a few quick clicks, check airspace rules and get automated access to controlled airspace (LAANC).

Features of OpenSky include:

Guide for drone flying - Find out where and when you can and cannot fly.

Compliance maps from Aviation Authorities - OpenSky makes it easy to visualize airspace rules tailored to your operation and aircraft; for both commercial & recreational drone operators.

Identify Risks - OpenSky will help identify possible flight hazards in your area like Temporary Flight Restrictions (TFRs).

Airspace authorizations - Drone operators can automatically request authorization to fly in controlled airspace, often the busy airspace near major cities. In the United States this is called LAANC.

Track your missions - OpenSky will track and manage your past and upcoming flights, notify you of changes to any planned flights.

You can find out more about OpenSky at: www.wing.com/opensky.

### 3/5 — Heads & tails better than ALoft but still obtuse

*2026-03-29, version 2.20251007.1*

App could be a little more helpful. For instance it asks for “registration #” and wont let you proceed without it THis is vague. What registration number from whom? After quizzing Perplexity Pro AI we figured out it’s a registration number not needed by anyone flying drones under 250 grams. Interface could be way better if they explained that they’re asking for the FAA registration number or something a little more clear. As pilots we’re dealing with all kinds of registration numbers, serial numbers, etc.

### 1/5 — Sketchy And Suspicious

*2026-03-11, version 2.20251007.1*

With a name like “OpenSky” you’d expect open source software but this is run by a private company.

The app requires you to authenticate and create your account by linking your Google account. Linking your Google account is the *only* way to use the app.

There’s no reason to make this the ONLY way for users to create accounts unless their goal is to siphon as much user data as possible. The whole thing is scummy.

### 5/5 — Part 107 Companion

*2026-01-23, version 2.20251007.1*

I use open sky on nearly every site visit where I’m flying my drone. I live in an area where there are many airspace regulations. Create a pilot profile at your drones and get airspace authorization in seconds for most.

### 4/5 — Trying my hand

*2026-01-08, version 2.20251007.1*

I am experimenting with submitting flight plans without actually flying my drone. How does submitting flight plans actually work?

### 2/5 — Average App. Needs updating

*2025-10-18, version 2.20251002.1*

The app doesn’t reflect the different CASA flying regulations for drone under 250g.

### 5/5 — Review

*2025-09-13, version 2.20250318.1*

Review

### 1/5 — Requires Google account

*2025-08-30, version 2.20250318.1*

Google is a non starter. There’s all sorts of third party login systems. Google is the last one I’d ever trust. Apple has their own third party login system. Very odd an iOS app wouldn’t support the system the app is actually running on.

### 5/5 — Perfect

*2025-08-11, version 2.20250318.1*

Simple and dependable. It gives me confidence that I can do my flight safely and legally.

### 2/5 — Great app but no longer works on ios12

*2025-05-29, version 2.20250318.1*

This iPad mini 2 is dedicated to the drone as it was built to fit one. Very sad an app like this crashes on it.

### 5/5 — Part 107 must have

*2025-05-16, version 2.20250318.1*

I tried a few apps, this one made LAANC approval simple. Love it. Highly recommend.
