### 3/5 — Smoke (surface)

*2022-09-26, version 2.1.0*

Very disappointed in your map that details smoke on the surface. Very low visibility and terrible air quality here in Santa Fe New Mexico. But your map shows nothing amiss. Today the density of smoke is much greater than normal although every day for weeks we’ve had smoke in the air and reduced visibility of our mountains. Just wanted you to know that I tried hello@open summit.com. couldn’t get that to open up no matter how many different ways I tried. Weather channels app also shows perfectly clear air here. Boggling my mind. at least their website provide you with a very easy way to give feedback.

### 5/5 — Great app for planning summer mountain hikes

Great app for planning summer mountain hikes

### 5/5 — Great guide!

*2022-07-10, version 2.1.0*

So thankful for this app! It is our go to before we hike a mountain!

### 5/5 — Go-to app for air quality info and more!

*2022-06-30, version 2.1.0*

I love this app for air quality info and wildfire smoke info, including FORECASTS!

### 5/5 — Don’t leave home without checking this app.

*2022-06-30, version 2.1.0*

Great weather app for all outdoors people. I use the five day forecasts to decide when and where to hike. The map overlays are also informative particularly concern wildfire smoke.

### 5/5 — Best Single Source

*2022-06-05, version 2.1.0*

This is my go to app for weather information to plan daily outdoor activities. Everything you need to know, plus extras like smoke & snow depth.

### 5/5 — All you need for outdoors weather and environment

*2022-01-27*

One this app--works great, they constantly add and improve on things you didn't even know could be improved. I find myself using it daily which is to me a small group of apps. It's useful year round too. Last summer during fires in the west, I was on an extended road trip in a camper from Lake Tahoe through the PNW and found the app a life saver for planning the next leg and where to stay. We were able to avoid most of the smoke fir the whole time thanks to being able to see wind and smoke snd AQI layers. It made a trip that could have been miserable an absolute joy. Absolutely love this -- and Open Snow too :-)

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for your detailed review and support! Please send an email to hello@opensummit.com if we can ever help with anything. -SAM

### 5/5 — A must have for outdoors in the mountains.

*2021-12-09, version 2.0.9*

I don’t use this app as much as I do the sister app, Open Snow but I’ve found Open Summit to be just as useful when I do.

Gives me a great current and forecast outlook for the mountains in my area when I plan on heading out for a big hike or mountain bike ride.

### 5/5 — Worth the price

*2021-11-04, version 2.0.9*

Highly recommended!

### 5/5 — Great data with a useful interface

*2021-10-20, version 2.0.9*

Easy to use with very good data—especially as conditions change in the mountains.

Hands down the best weather forecasts.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2021-10-19, version 2.0.9*

Love this app, just it daily for all my weather and forecast needs, smoke & air quality forecast is great, rely heavily on weather forecasts! Keep the features coming.

### 5/5 — Thanks

*2021-09-22, version 2.0.8*

Appreciate all the weather news! Keep up the great work.

### 5/5 — Smoke and rain

*2021-09-22, version 2.0.8*

Wow. Love this app as do all my family members as we have the family plan. We do so much outside and this app and the regions forecasts have really helped us plan our seasonal outings. With every penny .

### 5/5 — Great app

*2021-09-20, version 2.0.8*

This is the best one-stop source of weather forecasts and related info (e.g., smoke, lightning) for hiking season that I’ve found. A great complement to their (even better) OpenSnow app. I’ve been using the combo for several years, and consult one or the other almost daily.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Doesn’t do much unless you subscribe

*2022-09-13, version 2.1.0*

It do doesn’t give you info unless you subscribe.

### 1/5 — Forced to create an account

*2022-06-30, version 2.1.0*

I was really excited about this app, but you can’t view the forecast unless you create an account. Why should I have to give my full name and personal email address just to see the weather forecast?

Edit in response to the developer reply: Thank you for your response, but I still do not understand why a weather app would require users to create an account. I use multiple other weather and map apps without being forced sign up for an account or hand over sensitive personal data. My full name and personal email address are not required in order to view weather maps and forecasts online. I can just go onto apple weather, weather.com, NOAA, or similar resources. This is just another attempt to collect and sell peoples’ sensitive personal data. No thanks. I might be willing to consider it if they would let me anonymously use the app, but it doesn’t even allow for that.

### 1/5 — App not helpful

*2021-11-27, version 2.0.9*

The app fails to provide long term forecasts!

### 1/5 — Price increase not worth it

*2021-05-27, version 1.8.5*

Love Open Snow so the $20/year was tolerable but now that they increased it, it’s just too expensive for $30/year for only wanting to use the one app.

I get the added value of having both apps but Open Summit doesn’t do it for me and I’m not going to pay the higher price even if they try and justify it with the added app.

Let me pay $15/year for Open Snow and it’ll be all good. Otherwise it’s back to printing out the reports from NOAA for free.

### 1/5 — Useless without any overlay items

*2020-11-01, version 1.8.0*

Wow, first and worst app I have ever come across that doesn’t allow any overlays to the base map. Seriously! I got Apple Maps if I needed a map without overlays. If you are intending to download to evaluate your needs for this app, save your time as you are forced to setup an account that asks for your full name and email address and you get nothing in return.

The data this app if available in high resolution FOR FREE on the NOAA websites. Just creat short cuts to your Home Screen and save your yearly fee for something better than nothing that you get for “free here”.

### 1/5 — Do not get this app!

*2020-08-20*

It’s rare that I am so angry that I feel the need to write a negative review but I have to comment. This is a standard weather app that gives basic information provided by the NOAA. The free version gives very little of this information and only for some trailheads and peaks. I purchased the all access subscription and found it to have the same information you can get for free with a slightly prettier presentation. DEFINITELY not worth $20! I went back and reread the glowing over the top reviews. They read like absurd marketing language. I am amused at the thought of the developers writing reviews to themselves and then answering them. This is not my beef. I tried to find the toggle to stop auto renewal that they claim exists but doesn’t seem to. I tried to downgrade to the free version but the button on the website to do so is nonfunctional both on my phone and desktop. I have emailed the company with no response.

**Developer response:** Hello and thank you for your review. We're so sorry to hear that you aren't finding OpenSummit useful. With the free version of the app, you receive 2-day hourly forecasts for over 1,500 mountain locations in the US. With the All-Access upgrade, you receive 5-day hourly forecasts, estimated trail conditions, current radar, 18-hour forecast radar, 18-hour forecast wildfire smoke maps, 18-hour forecast temperature maps, a current snow depth map, and unlimited access to our winter service, OpenSnow with the same login information. Compared to other standard weather apps, OpenSummit tells you if a trail is dry or wet based on recent weather trends, provides at-a-glance risk assessment about rain, lightning, and wind, and allows you to track smoke from wildfires, and forecast this smoke for the next 18 hours. These are features that we believe can't be found on any other weather app. We read and respond to every review and email so please send an email to hello@opensummit.com and we'll solve any issues that you're having right away. Thank you so much! -SAM

### 2/5 — Subscription

*2023-06-06, version 3.0.0*

I bought the Subscription thinking that I was going to get 10 days forecast but my app shows only 5 days

### 2/5 — Basically useless in Canada

*2021-11-07, version 2.0.9*

Nice UI. Other than that it’s not particularly useful here in the Great White North. But…it’s a US based app. So, that’s great and as it should be, if you’re in the US.

### 2/5 — Lacks support for Canadian resorts

*2019-12-01, version 1.5.2*

Cool app, well designed with a nice concept but as someone North of the border it’s pretty useless to me as nothing nearby shows up

### 3/5 — Good data for the sites you can find

*2023-07-20, version 3.0.0*

As a rock climbing planning app it’s pretty limited. There are major crags and climbing areas that you can’t find. You would think something like red river gorge or new river gorge would be easy to get weather data on….

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Open Summit

*2023-09-12, version 3.0.2*

LOVE IT!

### 5/5 — Great app

*2023-05-18*

I religiously use OpenSnow and OpenSummit before any adventure (and even when I masochistically decide to check the weather while I’m stuck at my desk). They’re always coming out with new and inventive features, improving their forecasts, and app experience. These are must have apps for any outdoor sport or weather nerd.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much! We are in the process of retiring OpenSummit and moving all features over to our other app, OpenSnow. Please download OpenSnow for the best experience. -Sam

### 5/5 — I was wrong

*2022-10-29, version 3.0.0*

Missed the tab

### 5/5 — So helpful!

*2022-10-09, version 2.1.0*

I live in tahoe and have used the smoke / air quality forecasts every day the last two summers when the fire season heated up. Love all the work the OpenSummit/OpenSnow has made happen!

### 5/5 — Saved my summer road trips from ruin

*2022-09-14*

The mountain weather is now so much more complicated in the West with fires and smoke. This app brings everything together and lets you plan your missions with remarkable insight. For the last 3 summers, my road trips across the US would have been nightmares without this valuable info. What a great bargain, too.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much for your support! Please send an email to hello@opensummit.com if you ever have any questions. -SAM

### 5/5 — Unmatched forecasting

*2022-09-09*

I live on a large lake in northern Utah that seems to make it difficult to predict weather forecasts. Open Summit is the only source I use now to view upcoming storms and get reliable weather predictions. I really love the smoke (surface) overlay, and air quality forecast in summer months in order to plan for days that my children should play indoors. I love this app and am constantly sharing screenshots of maps to family and friends. Well worth the $20 annual fee.

**Developer response:** Thank you so much! -SAM

### 5/5 — Phenomenal App

*2022-09-02, version 2.1.0*

Great job to the team, this is incredible!

### 5/5 — Best mountain weather app

*2022-08-01, version 2.1.0*

I use it for all of my climbs! Great app and definitely recommend buying it

### 5/5 — Great App

*2022-07-27, version 2.1.0*

Love this app always consult it when planning outdoor activities. Especially like the breakdown of rain, lightening etc.

### 5/5 — THE primary source for Mountain weather

*2022-07-27, version 2.1.0*

Absolutely vital resource for anyone planning travel and activities in the Colorado mountains, or, frankly any other US mountain region. The maps and layers are the best.

For winter use, the sister app OpenSnow is also a must have.
