I would pause a lesson to come back to later, but when I come back to it later I have to start the lesson over again which is very frustrating. I’d prefer if I can come back to it and start where I left off. ### 4/5 — It actually works *2022-07-04, version 2.7.1* What I like about the OptiLingo Spanish course is that it actually works - I am actually learning Spanish! The app is good and has many phrases but I wish they were more phrases and lessons. Also I noticed they are some discrepancies between the written words and the spoken words in some lessons. For example, it is written ныщхьбэ for tonight , but she is saying нобэ пщыхьэщхьэм in lesson 34 review. There are also other examples of written discrepancies too. I suggest you guys fix these discrepancies and add pictures to the phrases. Please add titles to the lessons.( I mean if lesson 1 is about introductions then write introductions for the title) Also it would be nice if you added a verb section for 300 commonly used verbs and their examples in different tenses, in the conditional mood or other moods, with different directional affixes and other affixes for Kabardian and other languages. West Circassian/Adyghean would be nice too. Also add some more advanced lessons too. Also I noticed the Arabic section is in formal Fusha which is not so colloquial. Syrian or Egyptian Arabic would be good. Overall it is good, it has useful phrases and a good amount of review. ### 4/5 — It’s a good app but good be better. *2021-10-28, version 2.6.0* I downloaded this app and gave Korean and Japanese a shot. It’s a good app but a bit limited in terms of function. The app is good, if a bit basic and rigid in terms of it’s structure since every language can’t made to fit into these 100 lessons and expanding and adding on some features will make the app more robust in terms of it’s learning potential. Some additions I would love to see added to the app would be speech recognition to help perfect my pronunciation. The ability to point and click at each word/letter in the sentence and have it replay that particular word. All in all I appreciate the non gamification of the app and it’s strict focus on learning everyday sentences from the start. However, I do also wish the app had specific notes on each sentence ala the Mango language app to put things in context and to indicate additional things to note about that sentence such as Korean having different politeness levels in their speech. The same cold be said for Japanese as they’re certain terms you can only say to a blood relative vs a friend and having a cultural note inbetween the phrases or after would be most helpful. ### 5/5 — Kazmi190 *2021-08-24, version 2.6.0* .. ### 5/5 — New Update is A+ *2021-07-06, version 2.6.0* Digging the recent redesign. The method is simple but amazing. I believe in repetition when it comes to language learning. I can take the lessons anywhere I go and listen wherever I am. I have tried so many apps and tools and OptiLingo is the best. ### 4/5 — Italian language *2020-09-21, version 2.1.8* This app takes a different approach to Duolingo, and I find the two compliment each other. Rather than focusing on grammar you pick up useful phrases straight away. ### 5/5 — ShutzW *2020-09-02, version 2.1.8* I downloaded this app to help me learn Kabardian. It has proven to be a much needed aid in tackling this language that has few readily available resources for non-native learners. The choice of phrases and the audio from a native speaker has really benefitted my speaking ability. The only new feature I would like to see is a quiz function in order to track my progress. Overall good app. ### 3/5 — Good content, bad technically *2020-09-01, version 2.1.8* OptiLingo is a really good program for learning languages! It is good for me because I wanted to learn how to speak Swedish, but if you are looking to learn grammar or writing, you should look at a different program - that’s just not the emphasis of this app. The content itself is great, but I have to give the app itself 3 stars simply because it crashes/glitches a lot. I’ll be doing a lesson and it will freeze up then I have to exit out of it, and sometimes my progress does not save which I find very annoying. I really hope this can be fixed soon ### 5/5 — Great app *2020-08-21, version 2.1.8* Love how easy it is to use and so far really helping me learn and speak French- not just one word at a time. Very cool tool! ## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated) ### 1/5 — Terrible customer service *2025-09-09, version 2.7.2* I purchased an annual subscription. I tend to cancel these before auto-renewal so that I can decide if I want to continue a subscription rather than being auto-renewed into one. I paid for 12 months of OptiLingo, and have been using it here and there for 2 months. The website’s FAQ page says the following: Q: What happens if I cancel my subscription? A: You will retain access until the end of your current billing cycle. No further charges will be made. Well, that is not true. The iOS app now requires me to “upgrade” in order to access the lessons I paid for. And the web app just forces me onto a page begging me to subscribe to the free trial. I have essentially lost 10 months of the annual subscription I paid for. The worst thing about all this? The is no way to email OptiLingo. You cannot contact them to resolve problems like this. The contact page on the website just sends you to FAQs. And if you reply to emails from them, the emails bounce back as undeliverable. That is why my hand is being forced to make a one-star review. I don’t enjoy doing this. But when you treat your customers this way, they have no recourse. ### 1/5 — It’s just propaganda *2020-09-05* They say alot of things. Too bad they’re not accurate. It’s all motivated by avarice. Don’t be fooled. ### 1/5 — I wonder if it’s detrimental to learning *2020-08-21, version 2.1.8* So I saw that there was a ‘free for life if you sign up before mid-September’ thing going on and decided to sign up just to check it out, though I hadn’t needed any more resources than I already had, if this was useful enough it would be nice to have around. Unfortunately it’s not really helpful, and absolutely not when they start charging for it. 1. The entire thing is focused on listening to a computer-generated voice, then repeating after it trying to mimic it. - Copying a computer-generates voice could give you bad speaking habits. - Learning pronunciation is the only value a resource like this has. - In other words, it does its job badly because they didn’t hire actual voice actors. 2. All they do is say a phrase like “Who is she?”, “Hello”, “See you later”, and have you repeat them. - This is incredibly boring, and a very easy way to demotivate learners. - Boring = a good way to make sure the phrases don’t stick. - There are loads of phrase lists on the internet, many with native speaker audio to play. You may as well use those instead. 3. The lessons aren’t named. - If you already know some of your target language and hence don’t want to start at the beginning you can’t tell where to start as every lesson is generically named “Lesson 1”, “Lesson 37” etc. 4. The ‘literal translation’ often isn’t literal. - You have an option to toggle ‘literal translation’ on in settings. This is formatted to come below the normal translation, so for example you’ll see ‘I had a great time’, then ‘great time [it] was’ below it. - 楽しかった = past tense of 楽しい, which is an adjective meaning enjoyable-is. 楽しかったです = Enjoyable-was (with です adding no meaning except politeness in this instance). However, they say the literal translation is ‘Great time [it] was’, which is not literal at all. Sure it has a similar meaning but this is supposed to be the only semblance of grammar you get in this app and it’s blatantly wrong. 5. For Japanese, there’s no option for furigana, only a toggle for romaji above the kanji. - This isn’t a massive dealbreaker because you do get the generated audio pronouncing it, but it still would be nice to have furigana. ### 1/5 — Create an account? *2020-06-23, version 2.1.1* I can’t even create an account. I start with “Get started” then its say fill in required fields that are completely blank??? No indication as to what to fill in. ### 1/5 — Horrible. *2020-03-13, version 1.3* This is in no way, shape, or form actual or actually effective language learning. Absolute trash. ### 2/5 — App has potential but customer service is slow if needed *2023-02-26, version 2.7.2* I can see the strategy this app uses to teach a language and it has potential. Consistently using the same verb repetitively in the same lesson. I felt I actually knew what a few verbs meant and how to use them after two lessons. I’m currently in India and I want to quickly learn conversational Hindi. I decided to try the 3 month subscription and even tough I paid 7 days ago I still haven’t been able to access any lessons. I don’t have the time to try to fight to get access material. I purchased a phrase book, I’ll have a Hindi speaker read the phrase to me, record the phrase, then repeat it constantly. I won’t be able to group the phrases like this app but my book requires no customer service. You don’t want to wait for that with this app. ### 2/5 — Huge shortcomings *2021-09-17, version 2.6.0* I wish this app was useful. It’s not. It’s just an audio recording of a bunch of sentences. No way to replay, no flashcards or repeated learning. Too bad. ### 2/5 — Misleading, outdated, ZERO TPRS *2021-01-06, version 2.5.2* I read on their website that they teaching with a TPRS approach—a difficult find for Japanese. Upon using the app, nothing could be further from the truth. All you get is a robot reading phrases to you and you repeat it. No story telling. At least the Japanese words are displayed to read. ### 2/5 — Good idea, execution is frustrating *2020-07-24, version 2.1.5* I’m only two lessons in, but the timing of the app is very frustrating. Sometimes there are long gaps and then a phrase is very quickly done twice in a row with no time to practice. Even at lesson 2 the phrases are too long. I need them to be broken down and taught in pieces slowly then move faster. Not enough time is left between phrases to really practice them, I’m much slower than the speaker! ### 3/5 — End of Life? *2025-05-26* At this writing, OptiLingo has not been updated with a new release in over two years. Has development altogether ceased? I’m not experienced with this app, but since the App Store requires a rating for any comment which we leave, I will give three stars, pending more research on my part. ## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — Amazing language app *2025-06-30, version 2.7.2* I love this app but this improves me some Arabic but I know everything what it can be, but this is what I learned duolingo, funeasylearn, and all the time I learned about what I do if I already this time. ### 5/5 — Slick approach to learning a language *2022-06-30, version 2.7.1* I'm currently on day 72 and am still learning every day. Although I still have a long way to go before I can speak it fluently, I will be able to communicate in Italian using simple words and phrases. I've noted that less than 50% of the app's material has so far been covered. More opportunities to communicate and hear yourself converse have recently been added to the app thanks to a recent upgrade. Very slick. ### 5/5 — Fun for kids and adults *2022-06-09, version 2.7.1* I knew this app was a hit when my first-grader started using it to learn Circassian. He uses it on car rides to and from school and so far, has beaten me on the number of lessons covered. He does this on his own, without me having to prompt him. That alone is worth five stars. Another great thing is that the ease of use and linear progression makes it very easy to pop in and pick up where you left off. The layout and the way the content is presented make it simple to focus on what you want to learn (audio vs. visual), e.g. speaking vs. reading, or both at the same time. I'm so grateful this app exists, hats off to the developers! ### 5/5 — Natural way to learn a language *2022-06-08, version 2.7.1* This app makes learning a new language a breeze, it’s a natural way to learn a language rather than memorizing words and phrases. Normally it’s easy for me to lose interest in apps and i’ve used Duolingo before to learn Russian but I found OptiLingo more helpful! I’m able to have a decent conversation now and I honestly can’t wait to see even more IMPROVEMENT with myself! It’s especially endearing to me how this app teaches Circassian, which is so hard to come by. It’s hard being diaspora and not having access to the language as easily as others would overseas.
