### 3/5 — Janky so dar

*2026-08-06, version 5.0.0*

Usually the app works well as. However, there’s been two instances in the last two days since I’ve been using it where, despite the fact I was already signed in it hasn’t let me view an article saying, “to continue reading you need a subscription…”. After I push the button saying, “ restore purchase” and got a message from the app that said “ purchase history restored” the app simply went back to the original page saying that I needed a subscription and never let me read the actual article. Another time, when I clicked on a link in an article within the app, it took me outside the app to Oregonlive.com to read the article, again blocking my access to the article when it did so and saying I needed to sign in.

### 2/5 — iPadOS Navigation Bug Still Needs Attention

*2026-07-09, version 4.5.11*

Today, after a long hiatus, I subscribed to OregonLive again. Unfortunately, the latest version (4.5.11) of your app still has a bug that prevents proper navigation on Apple iPadOS. For example, when navigating from “Portland” to “Politics” on my iPad, the content is not refreshed. The same navigation works correctly on iOS. Selecting “Politics” should refresh the page and display the Politics section. Instead, the app remains on the previously displayed content.

I’m using a 12.9-inch iPad Pro (4th generation) running iPadOS 26.5.2. The problem is consistently reproducible on my device. When I previously reported this issue to your technical support team, I was told they were unable to reproduce it. Because I primarily use my iPad to read your content, I canceled my subscription last year (under a different email address).

As I mentioned to your support representative, I believe your development team could benefit from looking at the New York Times app as an example of a more polished user experience. Your browser-based navigation could also be improved.

### 2/5 — Annoying: Now Only Fragments of Articles

*2026-02-20, version 4.5.8*

A so-so app has taken a monumental downturn. The OregonLive app now only includes the first paragraph of each article. It’s a poorly designed and flawed attempt to get readers to subscribe, yet every complete articles are accessible at no cost on oregonlive.com. What’s the point of the app now?

### 2/5 — Poor performance!

*2026-01-05, version 4.5.7*

Often very slow. Even in the background, it makes my phone sluggish. After two or three articles, it begins freezing for a minute or so.

### 1/5 — App closes out.

*2025-12-18, version 4.5.5*

Every time I’m in this app lately, it closes it out. I’m a subscriber and it is increasingly frustrating to try to read or browse the app.

### 2/5 — Poor performance

*2025-12-08, version 4.5.5*

After two or three articles, it begins freezing for up to half a minute at a time. (Perhaps a memory leak?)

### 2/5 — Content is fine. Functionality is awful

*2025-12-01, version 4.5.4*

App is VERY slow to load, and constantly freezes. So frustrating.

### 4/5 — Used to work but now freezes on iPad

*2025-11-28, version 4.5.4*

I’m a OregonLive subscriber and happily used this app for years on my iPad 9th gen. Sometime in the last month the app became unusable with slowness and freezing. I have no trouble with other apps. I removed and reinstalled but this did not work. Finally my workaround was to remove the OregonLive app permanently and add a Home Screen link to the Oregonlive web page.

### 1/5 — Live on iOS26 on iPad

*2025-10-25, version 4.5.2*

Performance awful - perhaps it is better on older iOS and iPhone but new iOS and iPad the app freezes constantly, gets hung up by its own embedded ads, and is just very slow. It is the slow way to finding out what is happening in Portland. Someone please debug and cleanup this app for all devices on iOS 26.

### 1/5 — New update

*2025-10-11, version 4.5.0*

After latest update this app is glitching and a headache to deal with. Deleting for now, hopefully they fix it soon.

### 1/5 — Newest updated app freezes during scrolling

*2025-10-06, version 4.4.43*

With the newest updates, the OregonLive app on both my Gen 2 iPhone SE and Gen 9 iPad is now slow to start and will freeze for 2-10 seconds while scrolling through a news article. I believe the freezing may be due to the new ads that load part way through the article? Or it’s now a more of a memory hog? Whatever it is, the app is now unusable to read any article that is a longer read. I will go back to reading OregonLive via a web browser, checking back with the app to see if it runs any better after future updates.

### 1/5 — Fix the sign in issue. Allow the phone ap to work like the iPad

*2025-08-11, version 4.4.41*

This is Impossible!!!

### 3/5 — Paid subscription, massive ads

*2025-07-23, version 4.4.41*

There are so many ads, even though I am a subscriber. The ads are so invasive it slows down pages loading on my I pad, I doubt I will keep subscribing.

### 2/5 — Frustrating app

*2025-07-02*

I mostly read news on an iPad rather than iPhone. (The app might behave better on iPhone.) But, on iPad, the app freezes all the time, sometimes forever, especially with third party ads. The endless third-party ads (Taboula et al) embedded in the stories make it hard to follow a story to the end. As a paid subscriber, I deserve a much better experience.

### 1/5 — App crashes every time I do a search

*2024-10-13, version 4.4.23*

The moment I type in the search box, the app crashes. I reported it and wonder how long it’ll take tor them to fix. It’s been well over a week of constant crashing and I’ve made sure it’s not my phone. I strongly suspect it started with the last app update. I normally use the search daily to find articles I want—sigh. 😔

### 1/5 — Used to be greet, now garbage

*2024-10-11, version 4.4.23*

This app is just not worth it. It sends push notification but only for subscription/paid only stories. Additionally, most of the content is subscription based. Just use KGW instead. Same news but free and it doesn’t send you notifications for stories you can’t read.

### 1/5 — Great content buggy app

*2024-08-18, version 4.4.19*

I love the digital content from Oregon Live. I even paid for a subscription. I will NOT BE RENEWING.

One of the supposed benefits of subscribing is being able to share subscriber-only articles with others. However, any time I have tried to do that I have gotten an error message. I finally opened a ticket with the digital content folks. What a PITA. They ask me the same questions over and over but they do nothing to actually help. It has been more than three weeks of back and forth emails, and no solution has been discussed.

Are you logged in?
What is the error message?
Have you tried reinstalling?
Is this the same on all your devices?

Every email takes them two days to respond. And every response is from a different technician, so we almost have to start again.

Not worth the subscription price!

### 1/5 — Horrible app

*2023-09-25, version 4.3.11*

This is the worst news app ever. Always shutting down. Obnoxious ads that start to play when you’re reading a story. Not sure why I pay for this crap.

### 1/5 — Good app, but muted ads stop podcast playback

*2023-05-12, version 4.2.36*

If I have a podcast playing, scrolling over an ad will pause the podcast. I’m using an iPhone.

### 2/5 — Gone downhill

*2023-05-08, version 4.2.36*

Deleted. The opinion section turned into scare tactics. Yes Portland is dealing with big city problems comparable with those of most cities on the west coast. That doesn’t make good content. All bad news divides the community, we need to be shining a light on the good. The grassroots community efforts are what MADE Portland. Let’s maybe elevate those?

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — No longer useful for local news

*2026-08-06, version 5.0.0*

So much content is now under pay wall, increasingly each week, so not useful source of local news

### 1/5 — Rip Off Artists

*2026-08-04, version 5.0.0*

There is nothing good to say about OregonLive. I subscribe to two national newspapers and one UK newspaper and never have been denied access to any of them. I am continually being denied access to Oregon. The Oregon AG should investigate them. They are ripping off their subscribers.

### 1/5 — Love the Paywall

*2026-08-02, version 5.0.0*

Love how all the left-leaning media outlets have gone behind paywalls.

### 1/5 — Paywall extremes

*2026-08-02, version 5.0.0*

Far too many articles are behind a paywall. Makes this app functionally useless.

### 1/5 — Access

*2026-07-13, version 4.5.11*

I subscribe thru the app but am blocked from reading the entire article ….

### 1/5 — App is buggy!

*2026-05-12, version 4.5.11*

The Oregonlive app crashes, won’t save articles, and won’t allow sharing stories.

### 1/5 — iPad app loads slow and freezes

*2026-01-12, version 4.5.7*

Very frustrating. On my brand new iPad, it loads slowly and then after one menu selection, freezes and won’t allow selection of another.

### 1/5 — Paywall barricades

*2026-01-05, version 4.5.7*

I’m a paid subscriber but keep getting paywall ads when I try to read an article. I’ve contacted support services numerous times in an attempt to have the issue fixed, but nothing changes. I guess I’ll just keep up on the news by reading headlines. Not much value for $99 a year.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t recognize subscription

*2025-12-20, version 4.5.6*

I’m a longtime subscriber, have logged in properly, yet the app keeps demanding I login to continue reading, which doesn’t work. The thing is broken, not that it ever worked very well.

### 1/5 — App is garbage

*2025-12-20, version 4.5.6*

This app has basically become worthless with the recent releases. The app chooses what articles to display, which is their choice, but “search” is 100% broken, as in “does not work at all”. So to find an article that is not displayed in the app I need to go to a browser and bring up the full newspaper edition and find the article I want that way. Ridiculous!

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Only issue is that you

*2020-07-27, version 3.9.3*

Are failing to report riots in Portland fairly. You either ignore or blame trump.

### 5/5 — Oregon News

*2020-07-21, version 3.9.3*

Timely information from Oregon’s major newspaper!

### 5/5 — Goodbye RG

*2020-03-11*

For over 30 years I’ve enjoyed the Register Guard in Eugene. Since they’ve been sold (formerly locally owned) I’ve come to rely on the OregonLive/ The Oregonian for local news. I know I’m not alone in this. My hope is that the folks at OregonLive will grow to understand that their subscriber base has grown and respond with even more coverage of Willimette Valley issues.

### 5/5 — ❤️ this!

*2019-10-12, version 3.7.21*

Always interesting!

### 5/5 — Oregonian is exceptional

*2019-08-17, version 3.7.15*

Sometimes it takes Oregonian researchers to publicly uncover citizen issues. I’ve noticed that good results often follow their journalists. I’m a grateful PDX citizen. Thank you Oregonian.

### 5/5 — Great local coverage

*2019-08-16, version 3.7.15*

The wide range of current news is appreciated. Very good reporting.

### 5/5 — News Junkie

*2019-07-15, version 3.7.15*

I’m a self admitted news junkie. I appreciate getting the news in a similar format as in print. I still miss print, But I have to admit that I read the news on the go and in the format you present it to me.

### 5/5 — Great. I keep up on my home state every day

*2019-06-04, version 3.7.15*

Love to know what’s going on in Portland from a former Oregonian who lives in Palm Springs. Nice to hear without the rain

### 5/5 — Excellent News coverage

*2019-05-27, version 3.7.15*

This is where I get my news, weather and sports information.

### 5/5 — Great app

*2019-05-26, version 3.7.15*

I really like the O-live app and check it out everyday. I really like the comments that people leave with the various articles. Keep up the good work O-live. 👌😊
