### 3/5 — Where are the recordings?

*2025-12-29, version 3.1.8*

The app is perfectly minimalist, but the fact that you cannot extract or transfer the recordings from the ob-4 seems like a missed opportunity. I would love to be able to manage and delete what has been recorded in ob-4 via this app.

### 3/5 — Does not support iPad well

*2025-08-14*

12.9 inch iPad not supported well. App doesn’t support landscape mode and reverts to a strange bulky layout where user cant click buttons. Also poor volume knob isnt accurate with big value leaps of 10 value (so can set 23 volume, app would auto set 20, cant set 27, app auto sets to 30 etc) so very poor volume control accuracy

### 4/5 — Télécommande radio

*2025-02-22, version 3.1.7*

L’appli est trop minimaliste. Svp ajoutez des presets pour naviguer vite dans les radios
Users memory radio preset
Please 🙏

### 3/5 — Good app but needs better controls

*2024-04-26, version 3.1.0*

First off most speakers on the market allow you to see speaker charge within widgets on iOS. Battery status information is feasibly available on other speakers and needs to be added to OB-4. The reason I say this is because it feels like a missed small detail that will make a world of difference. In addition it would be nice for you to take recordings directly in the ortho app and save them from the OB-4 and save them to iPhone. Small little things and care for detail need to be added for this application.

### 3/5 — Please add an EQ!

*2022-08-13, version 2.0.10*

The app works fine, but doesn’t do much besides update the OB-4 firmware.

Would love an EQ since the OB-4 doesn’t have one built in :)

### 2/5 — Terrible UX

*2019-12-05, version 2.0.5*

The UX is embarrassingly bad for something that is so elegant in general. This just isn’t up to your standards.

Update: one year later, nothing has changed. Now it also functions bad. This is one of my favorite companies overall, but this app is the weakest point.

### 2/5 — iPhone X

*2018-10-18, version 2.0.5*

Still no iPhone X support? Come onnnn

### 2/5 — Amazing Company + Bad UI/UX

*2018-05-10, version 2.0.3*

Can someone tell me what those 3 music staff symbols do? Literally no documentation anywhere on their website, app or in forums.

### 5/5 — A comprehensive acoustic design experience.

*2015-09-12, version 1.6*

Slick easy-to-use interface. OD-11, even using only one on its own, produces amazing, rich sound. Ortho remote is only an added plus since the app is so fun to use.

### 5/5 — Orthoplay app and OD-11 cloud speakers

*2015-08-27, version 1.6*

Awesomely simple and beautiful controller app, for the equally awesome OD-11 Cloud Speakers - ground breaking rework of the 1970s Stig Carlsson originals by Sweden's teenage engineering... If you haven't heard them, you haven't really heard your music!!

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Worthless

*2026-08-13, version 3.1.8*

This app can’t even connect to an OB-4. Paired with the phone, unpaired, doesn’t matter. Genuinely embarrassing work from teenage engineering, I think an actual teenager made this.

### 1/5 — Just doesn’t work

*2022-11-04, version 2.0.10*

App no longer works. Hasn’t detected my speaker in over a year.

### 1/5 — Poor customer service

*2022-04-22, version 2.0.10*

Speakers look nice, sound good. BUT these are sold as Wi-Fi speakers yet every updates to airplay (or anything else) breaks connectivity so they become useless. Contacting support results in total silence. TE need to focus more on substance, without loss of style.

### 1/5 — Stuck scanning for OD-11, support dismissing feedback

*2021-12-18, version 2.0.10*

OD-11 users have been neglected by Teenage Engineering for a while now. This lovely and really expensive speaker feels like an afterthought for company. Airplay2 support was promised long time ago but never came and issues like this keep happening and company seems to be busy with other stuff and not willing to fix things for their loyal customers. I really love TE and have been supportive and patient throughout the years but it has now become too frustrating. It makes me a bit sad. :(

### 1/5 — Doont get update

*2021-05-13, version 2.0.9*

Updated app (with op4 support) fails to recognize my speakers. It scans endlessly but wont find the 2 speakers no more. Whilst they are playing through wifi, mind.
So dont update

### 1/5 — Not working with new OS and bad design

*2019-11-26, version 2.0.5*

This app is pretty poor from a user experience perspective considering the huge cost of the company’s speakers.
Doesn’t seem to ever work with Spotify connect and since the latest iPhone software came out no updates or fixes have been made, rendering the equipment impossible to use to its full potential.

Please fix! :)

### 2/5 — Add FM radio preset !

*2026-03-20, version 3.1.8*

Nice app but we need the radio presets so that we can easily select a radio

Ideally directly on the device as well

### 2/5 — Does not support iPad well

*2025-10-08, version 3.1.7*

12.9 inch iPad not supported well. App doesn’t support landscape mode and reverts to a strange bulky layout where user cant click buttons. Also poor volume knob isnt accurate with big value leaps of 10 value (so can set 23 volume, app would auto set 20, cant set 27, app auto sets to 30 etc) so very poor volume control accuracy. Constantly have to unplug speakers to get connection to work … disappointing and poorly designed software from teenage engineering

### 2/5 — Frustrating iPad Experience - Needs Major UI Overhaul

*2024-08-30, version 3.1.0*

The orthoplay app for controlling Teenage Engineering's OB-4 speaker is disappointingly poorly optimized for iPad users. While functional, the app's interface is clearly designed for smartphones, resulting in a frustrating experience on larger tablet screens.

The most glaring issue is the app's orientation and scrolling. On a 12.9-inch iPad, the interface is locked in a portrait mode, forcing users to scroll horizontally extensively through what should be a single-screen interface. This scrolling feels unnatural and wastes the iPad's generous screen real estate. Instead of adapting to the larger display, the app presents a stretched-out phone interface, making navigation cumbersome and inefficient.

Basic features like landscape mode are inexplicably absent, which is particularly puzzling for an audio control application that could benefit from a wider, more accessible layout. The app's minimalist aesthetic, while visually appealing, sacrifices usability on larger screens.

While the app does provide essential functionality for controlling the OB-4, including access to its unique features and firmware updates, the user experience falls short of what one would expect from Teenage Engineering. The infrequent updates and lack of in-app support options further compound the frustration.

Teenage Engineering urgently needs to redesign the app with iPad users in mind, optimizing the layout to take full advantage of the larger screen and eliminating the need for excessive scrolling. Until these improvements are made, users will likely find the orthoplay app to be a weak link in an otherwise innovative product ecosystem.

### 2/5 — Broken in last OS update. Used to be 5 stars

*2020-12-22, version 2.0.8*

Would give it 5 stars but stopped working the last update. Opening app just goes to a blank white screen. Please devs fix support

Updated Dec 2020: still tons of problems 1+ later - now with a pair of OD-11s and the new OB-4. Speaker pictures don’t render, app switching like (Bluetooth > fm radio) via app don’t work. Can’t pick speaker colors (I have yellow displays as white for my OD-11s - OB-4 doesn’t have any image) app didn’t even connect to the OB-4 and I can’t switch music to the OB-4 via the app ... I have to go to my iPhone settings and switch manually to use app. Man ... tbh too many issues to list. Super disappointed, great hardware company, pretty rough iOS app developers. Still love the speakers ... lot more work getting to enjoy them than I expected for 3k USD into three speakers haha

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2023-08-24, version 3.0.12*

It’s like if Dieter Rams himself were to design an app. It’s simple, useful and seamlessly does the job.

### 5/5 — AirPlay 2 has landed!

*2022-11-24, version 3.0.9*

Thanks Teenage Engineering for this huge update.

### 5/5 — Greatly improved app

*2021-04-23, version 2.0.8*

They’ve added more features and made the devices more accessible.

### 5/5 — I heart Teenage Engineering!

*2021-01-29, version 2.0.8*

From the sharp design, to the thoughtful care put into the product lines, I highly recommend this app. I use it for my pair of OD-11 speakers. I’m always happy to see when an update is available for the speakers via the orthoplay app interface. It’s a testament of quality for a company when their product continues to improve.

### 5/5 — Works good, looks good

*2018-04-28, version 2.0.3*

The UX is quirky, but not bad. I’m up and running and the app does everything I need it to do. I love the Ortho Remote style volume dial. It would be cool if you could double/triple tap for next/prev track like on the hardware Ortho Remote.

### 5/5 — Excellent app (and speaker)

*2016-11-10, version 1.7.6*

I have been courious about the OD-11 for a while, but I haven't really found any good reviews or discussions of it. Anyways, I decided to take a chance on it, and am very happy that I did. The set-up was flawless (it connected to our WiFi, Spotify, and AirPlay without problems). The sound is wonderful (good quality, clear sound and solid bass, and no drop-outs). Oh and, since this is a review of the app that goes with it, the app is very well designed and works flawlessly too ... overall this techocology seems very mature for a small company making its first speaker.

### 5/5 — High quality.

*2016-05-25, version 1.7.5*

Simple and effective. Compliments the superb OD-11 perfectly. Any way we can get the Spotify logo to open the app instead of the App Store?

### 5/5 — Gets the job done

*2015-12-02, version 1.7.4*

Unique interface, but works fast and without hassle. Not much to say. If you have an OD-11 you need it, if not, you don't.

### 5/5 — Excellent

*2015-10-09, version 1.7.3*

As a native app and as a web app, orthoplay is incredibly easy, useful and well designed. The perfect companion remote app for the best wifi speakers in the market.

Thank you for this incredible product! Also, thanks Mr. Simon on the awesome technical support from TE!

### 5/5 — Awesomely simple app for a beautiful speaker

*2015-09-20, version 1.6*

A sure fire way to tell if an app is designed well is if it has very few words to read and yet you can still use it effectively...which this app does.

The interface has all the design touches that you'd expect from Teenage Engineering and compliments the OD-11 perfectly. Intuitive controls for your speaker. I use mine to stream Mixcloud without issue and sounding gorgeous.

Thanks again TE!
