## What is OSHI?

OSHI is the private messenger that keeps working when the internet doesn't.

Chat, call and share over a Bluetooth + Wi-Fi mesh — no SIM, no phone number. When you do have a connection, everything syncs seamlessly. When you don't — at a festival, on a plane, hiking, travelling abroad, or in an outage — OSHI keeps working by hopping messages from phone to phone.

WHY OSHI
• Works offline — a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi mesh reaches people near you with zero signal
• One-to-one chats and calls end-to-end encrypted — X3DH + Double Ratchet
• No phone number, no SIM, no email required
• On-device AI assistant that runs entirely on your iPhone
• Voice and video calls
• Group chats, voice notes, photos, files, live location
• Self-destructing "view once" media
• Your keys stay on your device — we can't read your messages

HOW FAR THE MESH REACHES
Offline mesh is short range. Both phones need OSHI open to find each other, roughly 100 m apart in the open and much less through walls. It reaches further only when other people nearby also have OSHI open to pass the message along. If no one is in range, OSHI sends over the internet instead.

PRIVATE BY DESIGN
One-to-one messages are encrypted before they leave your phone and can only be read by the person you send them to. Group names and member lists are visible to our servers, and messages bridged to other devices or LoRa radios are not encrypted by that link.

ON-DEVICE AI
The assistant runs locally on your iPhone — your prompts and its replies never leave the device. Like any AI, it can be wrong, so check anything that matters.

BUILT FOR THE REAL WORLD
Festivals, crowded venues, hikes, flights, travel abroad, power cuts and dead zones: when the network drops, OSHI keeps the conversation going with the people around you.

Download OSHI and take your conversations off the grid.

### 1/5 — Audio doesn’t work

*2026-08-17*

Tried video call and the audio was very weak and eventually just stopped with weird noises (but still low volume).

**Developer response:** Hi OOC17,

Apologies for the inconvenience. We’re going to review the issue and do our best to fix it as quickly as possible.

We’re currently working on LoRa message transmission for the next update, and we hope to have your video issue fixed in the same update as well.

Thank you for your patience and for reporting this to us.

Best,
Hugo - OSHI Team

## Frequently asked questions about OSHI

### How does OSHI work without internet?

OSHI utilizes a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi mesh network to connect devices directly. Messages can hop from phone to phone, extending the range even without a cellular or Wi-Fi internet connection. This allows for communication with people nearby.

### What is the range of the OSHI offline mesh?

The offline mesh has a short range, typically around 100 meters in open spaces and less through walls, provided both phones have OSHI open. The range can extend further if other nearby users also have OSHI open to relay messages.

### Is my communication secure with OSHI?

One-to-one chats and calls are end-to-end encrypted using X3DH and Double Ratchet protocols, meaning only you and the recipient can read your messages. Your encryption keys remain on your device.

### Can I make calls with OSHI?

Yes, OSHI supports both voice and video calls. These calls are also end-to-end encrypted for private one-to-one conversations.

### Does OSHI require a phone number or email?

No, OSHI does not require a phone number, SIM card, or email address to use. It is designed for private communication without needing personal identification.

### What kind of content can I share with OSHI?

You can share voice notes, photos, files, and live location through OSHI. It also features self-destructing 'view once' media for added privacy.

### What is the on-device AI assistant in OSHI?

OSHI includes an AI assistant that runs entirely on your iPhone. Your prompts and its responses stay on your device, ensuring privacy, though its responses should be fact-checked.

### What devices does OSHI support?

OSHI is available on Mac, Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad, allowing for cross-platform communication and usage.

## Version history (last 5 releases)

### 1.0.39 — 2026-08-20

Security — two issues found by an independent researcher, both fixed:
• A single corrupted or forged packet could poison an encrypted conversation and leave every later message unreadable until the session was reset. Encryption state is now committed only after a message is proven authentic.
• Bot conversation history was kept in app preferences, which device and iCloud backups copy as-is. It now lives in the Keychain, on this device only.
Reported privately by Turáni Gergely — thank you.

Messaging
• Delivery is far more reliable: messages no longer get stuck when an encrypted session drifts, and group messages are no longer dropped for a group you have not joined yet.
• Replies quote the right message and take the colour of the bubble they answer, and a message from yesterday shows a time you can find again.
• Photos and videos send faster and use less data — quality is now chosen by measuring the link instead of guessing.

Calls
• Minimise a call to go read your messages, then tap to come back.
• Contacts show their name instead of their public key, and Start Chat works from the call screen.

Nearby and bots
• The Nearby "Disconnect" button now actually disconnects.
• Bots: a manifest that states what a bot may do, permissions enforced in one place, a directory where a listing cannot lie, and local bots that leave nothing on the server.

### 1.0.36 — 2026-08-03

Calls finally work.

• Audio is fixed. Almost half of what your microphone picked up was being thrown away, the other side heard invented filler in the gaps, and the codec was pinned at its worst quality. Voices now come through clean and complete.
• Video calling works — including over mobile data for the first time.
• Calls no longer freeze the app when you dial or hang up, and a freeze that could kill OSHI in the middle of a video call is fixed.
• One incoming-call screen instead of two.
• Do Not Disturb no longer breaks incoming calls.

Also in this update:
• Offline maps now download points of interest — shops, restaurants, landmarks — which they never did before.
• Large file transfers resume where they left off instead of starting over.
• Privacy: group messages are no longer broadcast in readable form to nearby devices.

### 1.0.35 — 2026-07-23

This update fixes the bugs you reported:

• Faster launch — OSHI no longer freezes for a few seconds when you open it, even with lots of photos and videos in your chats.
• Share to OSHI now shows your contacts by name and sends in a single tap (no more picking twice).
• More reliable sending of large photos and documents — over both the internet and the offline mesh.
• More reliable voice and video calls — fixes cases where a call connected but had no sound.
• Stability improvements.

### 1.0.34 — 2026-07-18

More reliable calls and messages: clearer audio, faster reconnection, and fixes so every message sends and arrives. Thanks for using OSHI!

### 1.0.32 — 2026-07-15

• NEW: Dictate to your private AI with your voice — fully on-device, nothing leaves your iPhone.
• A clearer first-run guide so you're chatting in seconds.
• More reliable calls: they wake, ring, and stop right on time.
• Faster, more dependable message delivery and notifications.
• A more beautiful, futuristic look throughout.
