We were both so excited to use them only to find that I could add the books into the app. I tried EVERYTHING with no luck. You would think that there was a way to just type in the books but no, you have to submit a ticket and wait to hear from someone. I really want to like this company but they make it really hard. ### 1/5 — No longer detects books *2023-11-12* This app was okay for practicing reading until now when it won’t even detect the books. I’ve been disappointed with how it hears and corrects reading as it is (as mentioned by other reviewers), but now that it won’t even detect the books it’s completely useless. Even got a new reflector. Does not detect books. Finally came here to read reviews and looks like it’s an issue for others as well. Complete waste. For a set that you have to spend $50-60 to get, only to have the app not work is so pointless. OSMO is going bankrupt and I can see why. Completely terrible. I cannot log in to my existing account and I can’t use a new email address. It says try again later. I can’t even go to your website because I get an error page with “DNS points to prohibited IP.” We can’t use the code to finish setup even though it was already setup. I cannot play any of the Osmo games. The same thing is happening on those games too. What’s going on? ### 1/5 — Doesn't Detect Books After Update *2024-11-14* Do not purchase. It wasted my money and time! I tried to contact customer service but they only suggest me to adjust for the reflector which I use it in other Osmo app is super smooth. Disappointed with Osmo!!!!! ### 1/5 — Not working *2024-02-22* All my other Osmo apps are working fine except this one. It was initially detecting books but the 2nd time using the app it will not detect anything. Only for this specific game not the other Osmo apps which lead me to believe it’s an app issue and is not an issue with my iPad or reflector. I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app and it will not detect anything. I’ve used the Osmo detector app and it is working fine. Please fix this app so that I can utilize the books I’ve spent money on. ## Most praised reviews (8 highest-rated) ### 5/5 — A fun way to practice reading *2024-09-26* I’ve used this program since it came out. We love the magic wand activities.- sight words and comprehension. The books have always been easy to add. I’ve not encountered a problem with that. I find the voice recognition works well even with mild articulation errors. I highly recommend a microphone as sometimes my child speaks a bit softly, especially when puzzling out a word. We sit together and do this so if the occasional word help is needed, we can move through it quickly. Great program! We love the subscription. Sometimes I get asked to just sit and read the books together, no app. That speaks to good storytelling too. ### 5/5 — We Love Osmo *2022-10-17* Everything we have purchased has been such a great learning tool! My kids love it! We did have an issue with scanning the books in the beginning. We were scanning the back of the book bc the instructions made it seem like you had to - you only have to scan the front. **Developer response:** Oh no, sorry about that! We love all the osmo games and this one didn’t disappoint. ### 4/5 — Love mostly everything osmo but doesn’t recognize books *2023-09-15* It’s super cute and creative but I have to move the book around so much that my child loses interest. The animation is cute and fun but it doesn’t understand what my kid says. It will be perfect once they work out those issues. ### 3/5 — Fun, but not good for “teaching a kid to read.” *2024-03-05, version 1.1.3* Pros ✅: Engaging Allows word practice in isolation Has some phonics practice Cons ❌: Not sequential/systematic No published scope and sequence No way to track what your kid is working on/their progress Books are not decodeable (the stories contain phonetic concepts that have not been previously taught). In short, this could be a good app for a precocious reader who likes the game, but if you are hoping it will support a struggling reader this will likely not help them because it lacks explicit, systematic instruction. It doesn’t teach your kids things sound by sound, from the beginning, so it might be a good supplement to a curriculum but it by no means “teaches your child to read” as they claim, unless your child happens to be really good at figuring out the phonetic code on their own. ### 2/5 — Cannot Add books *2022-11-16* Pretty bummed because we have not been able to add books since the initial set. There are no troubleshooting steps on the website for the Reading Adventure and trying to find any level of direct support runs me up against a wall, and being forced to submit a generic form. I have yet to hear back for assistance while our pile of books continues to grow to 12, with 8 of them not yet loaded. **Developer response:** Oh no, sorry about that! To add books, from the main menu you should see an Add Books button. After tapping that button, you can place the book in front of the Osmo and your books will register in the game. If these steps don't help, please do reach out to us at support@playosmo.com and let us know what's going on. We'd love to know what device and account you're using, and we'll try to have it fixed for you ASAP. Either way, we're terribly sorry first experience wasn't a magical one. ### 2/5 — Volume too low and voice detection is inconsistent *2022-09-19* Overall the app functions as intended but several issues remain after the latest update. The volume is too low when using an iPad 6th generation with latest iOS 15.7. At max volume the sound is barely audible. Even with an external Bluetooth speaker, the sound is still low with noticeable degradation in sound quality making it hard to distinguish sounds the child is suppose to repeat. We finally resorted to buying a headset with built in boom mic for our child to accurately hear sounds and for the software to accurately detect what our child is saying. ### 2/5 — Needs Improvements *2022-09-16, version 1.0.1* We are avid Osmo users. So we are very excited to add to our OSMO library. I understand the app and game are very new. Kinks are normal. The app is currently crashing, and we can’t get past the intro. We also can not adjust the volume at all despite our device volume being turned all the way up. I have confidence OSMO will correct the app issues so we can play this game.
