### 2/5 — Not good

*2026-01-10, version 4.4.1.5*

It doesn’t work properly … some things don’t link to the OU website such as video and some audio resources.
And also the forum part doesn’t seem to work properly either.

### 2/5 — Poor

*2025-09-29, version 4.4.1.5*

Interactive activities don’t work and videos don’t always load. As students are forced to use online resources as their main means of study this is extremely poor. I’m especially irritated given that the OU has had years to sort out these issues and charges students thousands of pounds for substandard resources.

### 1/5 — Doesn’t work at all

*2025-05-17, version 4.4.1.5*

Every time I log in and select a module, the app just crashes and restarts. Unfortunate that we can’t have access to a useful app, especially considering students pay a lot of money to study. Even just basic functionality would be extremely helpful, but the app simply doesn’t work. Using the website is fine but not always accessible, so having the app maybe having the ability to listen to recordings or view resources like exam papers etc would be good. Hopefully the OU can work on implementing these adjustments to help their students.

### 2/5 — Need improves

*2025-04-05, version 4.4.1.5*

It almost always fails

### 1/5 — For the love of god update it

*2025-04-03, version 4.4.1.5*

I can’t do my work properly because every time I go on the app the pages refuse to load. I even deleted the app and re-downloaded it but it is still the same. It was working fine before the last update, why on earth has it not been updated since?

### 2/5 — How is it still so bad?

*2025-03-27, version 4.4.1.5*

This app has the potential to be so much better than it is. I’m a bit perplexed as to why it’s so bad (for all the reasons already outlined by so many other reviews) when the OU has been operating online for so long. Sort it out please, it’s well within the Open University’s capabilities.

### 1/5 — Unusable

*2025-03-17, version 4.4.1.5*

Unusable app, useless in this state.

### 3/5 — Great but it’s not working atm

*2025-02-22, version 4.4.1.5*

I really like this app and have been using it for my four modules so far, however the latest update is not working properly. The screen doesn’t load at all sometimes so that is the main issue for me. I have to write a review to raise this issue because the app hasn’t been updated since. Otherwise it is great when it’s working.

### 1/5 — Unreliable and non inclusive

*2025-02-21, version 4.4.1.5*

Might work for people with newer phones / operating systems but for the rest of us it’s a waste of time. Planned to catch up on my work over 2 long journeys but the app kept crashing. Now really behind in an already busy and stressful month.

### 3/5 — Fine when it works

*2025-02-12, version 4.4.1.5*

The app itself is decent when it works - easy to navigate and use. However, ever since the last update at the end of last month, I’ve found that more often than not the app simply doesn’t work properly. You’ll open it up for the home page (where it comes up with the module page etc) to not load properly, if at all. If you tap the module you’re presented with a spinning wheel for all eternity until you give up, refresh the app and start the process over again. If you manage to get to your module page that doesn’t always load properly, and when it does load you could tap assessment for example and it’ll load but then if you tap forum after the assessment tab stays up..but under the forum one.

Basically, when it loads properly and behaves it’s fine, but when it doesn’t behave it’s terrible.

### 1/5 — Not fit for purpose

*2025-02-08, version 4.4.1.5*

I agree with the other comments. The website is not good and this app is really quite a terrible extension of that.
It often doesn’t load pages after clicking on a button or, better yet, crashes completely. It resets itself almost every time you open it so you lose your place and start navigating all over again. Anything useful just pushes you back to their website which requires another login and is barely usable on a phone.

It’s quite annoying that the Open University digital experience is so poor considering this is their whole selling point.

### 1/5 — The update has broken the app

*2025-02-02, version 4.4.1.5*

None of my study materials at loading, although the assessment tab is. The module page just comes up blank

### 1/5 — Update wrecked my UI

*2025-01-22, version 4.4.1.5*

4.4.1.5
Nothing is fully loading, I cannot see written values, it's all just photos, icons, and constant pulsing/buffering indications where the written values should be

### 3/5 — A little more work

*2024-09-18, version 4.3.0.9*

This app is handy and wonderful, you can download the workload for offline viewing which is really useful. But, it’s held back by a lack of zooming in on texts or increasing the font size. My eyes get tired easily trying to read the small text on an ipad mini, can’t imagine how mobile users handle it.

So due to that issue I’m ignoring this app and sticking to the web version where I can zoom to my hearts content.

### 2/5 — Poor accessibility / text size options

*2024-09-04, version 4.3.0.9*

After finding the OU web based interface really annoying to use especially recently, I thought this app would be better.
On my iPad the text was quite small, so I used the text size option in settings. This changed the menu text but not the course material text. I tried the iOS built in text resize / dynamic text, and that isn’t supported by this app either. Very disappointed overall, I need bigger text. Still haven’t found a solution that works for me for OU mobile study.

### 1/5 — Where are my courses?

*2024-08-22*

Signed onto the app and could not, for the life of me, find my enrolled courses. Then, after signing off the app kept my name displayed on the sign on screen !

I hope my this is not the quality I can expect when I actually begin the actual courses….

### 2/5 — Not an app just a port

*2024-06-06, version 4.3.0.9*

This is basically the same as if you were to load up the website. That’s it.
Pretty poor to be honest.

### 1/5 — Awful

*2024-04-21, version 4.2.0.4*

App notifications are broken 💀

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — No sign up

*2026-06-18, version 5.0.0.1*

Can’t log in on original account, can’t sign up with new account! Says “password can not be based on a dictionary word” tried random letters and numbers….. same thing

### 1/5 — No point to this app

*2026-03-07, version 5.0.0.1*

I don’t even know why they made this app - to do almost everything it sends you to your mobile browser. With virtually no functionality in the app just go to the OU mobile site instead. At least there’s no lag.

### 1/5 — Slow, dated and desperately in need of a serious update.

*2026-02-06, version 4.4.1.5*

Frankly, considering the cost of a university education in this day and age, you’d assume you’d at least get a functional app to aid your studies. This is the slowest to load, clunkiest and most anti-user app I have ever attempted to use for education. Things take a solid minute to load on a strong internet connection. Lots of the time, videos just won’t play, meaning I either spend 5 minutes of my very limited study time trying to dig out the relevant page on the website or I just skip over it and hope it wasn’t imperative. In the world we live in, a government backed organisation like the OU could surely have a decent, reliable app made for its students. Unfortunately a pock on the otherwise magnificent work of the Open University.

### 1/5 — Needs improvement

*2025-10-30, version 4.4.1.5*

I keep trying to use the app it either doesn’t load or when it does get to My modules it is incredibly slow

### 1/5 — really wish i had a good word to say

*2025-10-29, version 4.4.1.5*

i really wish this app worked, i think it could be so helpful for many things, but the home screen doesn’t even load and i have sat in the app for over an hour with nothing more than a white screen and blue ‘OU study’ banner. really disappointed.

### 1/5 — Do not recommend

*2025-10-07, version 4.4.1.5*

Has zero benefit over using safari on the phone, it’s very slow and you cannot access tutorials on it.

### 1/5 — Dissappointed

*2025-10-06, version 4.4.1.5*

The app does not work and its not reliable in any type a shape or form. Complete disaster. Please update the app we need it as students.

### 1/5 — Not functional, poor interface

*2025-09-20, version 4.4.1.5*

Not functional and poor interface. Modules are a mess to navigate. Quizzes don’t work half the time. Pathetic overall. Btw, this is the second time I’ve reviewed this app, seems my first review was deleted. Makes me wonder why… this time I will take a screenshot!

### 1/5 — Why is this app even exists?

*2025-07-22, version 4.4.1.5*

The app just directs you to the OU webpage making you login twice. No point to have it.

### 1/5 — Would give no stars is possible

*2025-05-19, version 4.4.1.5*

App doesn’t even work, like at all. Says I’m enrolled in no modules which, I am enrolled in more than one.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Extremely helpful

*2024-05-14*

This app has helped me through my three years so far, I don’t think I would have done so well without it. With this app on my phone and my iPad, I have been able to access it everywhere I go. Thanks for keeping this app running so well, I’m a very grateful student.

### 5/5 — Really useful study tools

*2023-11-23, version 4.2.0.4*

Obviously, I do my main studying the website on my laptop, but the app is a really great add-on while out and about. Particularly the option to download the content for offline use.

### 5/5 — Most useful app ever

*2022-10-25, version 3.9.3.4*

I’ve been an OU student on and off for about 14 years and this is what I’ve wanted for most of them. I’ve just returned to study a new qualification after two years off and this app has completely changed how I study. Thank you! The only additional feature on my wish list at the moment is a bookmark feature so I can flag pages I want to refer back to.

### 5/5 — Really useful.

*2022-10-18, version 3.9.3.4*

Not sure what sort of experience others were expecting from it, but it does everything it needs to and it runs absolutely fine on the iPad.

It allows for content downloads and provides a decent alternative to the website. If you have troublesome internet connection, it’s a life saver.

### 5/5 — It is perfect

*2022-04-16, version 3.9.3.4*

I really like it now. It has got all my modules. The app is very user friendly and easy to use.

No issues.

### 5/5 — Early review - it’s great!

*2022-01-16, version 3.9.3.4*

I haven’t officially started studying yet, but I’ve downloaded to get used to it and it seems to have everything you’d need. The resources tabs has the module textbooks which is such a relief as it will make studying on the go, at work, in bed, wherever you’ve got your mobile, so much more convenient. No more lugging books around 😁

The study planner is also so much easier to find and navigate than through the browser. Win win 🥇

### 5/5 — Fantastic

*2020-11-07, version 3.9.2.1*

A great app, has all the modules I’m currently studying which is fantastic . Information is clear and app loads fine . Great for on the go reading/catch-ups and a few minutes here and there . Wouldn’t really use it for any long durations.

### 5/5 — Such a great help

*2020-06-04*

I was using the old app and was fed up with it so I looked on the app store to see if there was a newer version and found this. I am SO glad that I did
This is such a big help and means I can view things on my phone while I’m out and about instead of using the website.
This is a big help to my studies

**Developer response:** Hi Holly, Thank you so much for your review, this is really great to hear. The intentions of OU Study app are to be easy to use, and to access your planner and study materials whilst you’re out and about as well as being able to download items for use offline. We are continually improving the app and welcome any further feedback for improvements, so please do share your thoughts via the Feedback option. Good luck with your studies! Veda

### 4/5 — Good

*2022-10-24, version 3.9.3.4*

I can do everything I need to on here. Useful and more convenient that always using the browser. It could be faster but so could the website.

### 3/5 — It’s okay.

*2025-10-24, version 4.4.1.5*

It’s user friendly. An easy place to view certain areas quicker than you would online. Like navigating from the planner to assessments. But my goodness it’s painfully slow. I have to restart numerous times to get it to work.
