## What is Outcrop?

Point your camera at the landscape around you to learn about its geology: what the rocks are, when and how they formed, and where the continents were at the time. Outcrop also shows the geologic map wherever you are, and it works offline.

When you open Outcrop, the bar at the bottom of the screen shows the rock you're standing on, its age and the region you're in. Pull it up to learn more about that rock: what it's made of, where it fits in Earth's history, the layers of rock beneath it, and fossils found in it nearby. Tap anywhere on the map to learn about a different spot.

AUGMENTED REALITY
Hold your phone up to the view to see the geologic map drawn over the hills in front of you, on a 3D model of the terrain. The rock in the center of the screen is identified, and peaks, passes and lakes are labeled so you can tell which ridge is which. If the compass is a little off, drag to line the map up. When you're riding in a car, the view keeps up with the landscape as you go. You can also take a picture of the view, with the map and the rock's name on it, to save or share.

WHERE IT FORMED
See where a rock was on the globe when it formed, using C. R. Scotese's maps of the ancient Earth. Press play to watch plate tectonics carry it to where it is today.

THREE MAPS
Bedrock: Macrostrat's geologic map, which combines published maps from around the world. Some places are mapped in more detail than others.
Quaternary: young deposits such as glacial till, river gravel and dunes, plus recently active faults, for the United States.
Soils: the USDA soil survey, for the United States.

SAVED AREAS
No signal at the trailhead? Before you go, outline an area of up to 2,500 km² and save its maps, terrain and place names to your phone, plus satellite imagery if you want it. Outcrop tells you how much space the download will take before it starts.

Geologic maps from Macrostrat and the USGS. Soils from USDA NRCS. Fossils from the Paleobiology Database. Ancient maps and plate motions from C. R. Scotese's PALEOMAP project. Elevation from Mapterhorn. Place names © OpenStreetMap contributors. Basemap and imagery from Mapbox.
