### 4/5 — After Hike Survey

*2026-05-11, version 2.0.1*

Please include an option to opt out of an event survey. There’s no button to close the survey. These should not be mandatory.

### 3/5 — Nice app.

*2025-09-10, version 1.8.1*

I would love to see the following updates:
1. To be able to see who is registered for each event. You know we have to know “Who all gone be there?” Very important.
2. Option to view in dark mode would be easier on the eyes.
3. Actual photos of each event.

### 3/5 — Stuck

*2025-08-03, version 1.6.0*

The app gets stuck on the description section and won’t let me scroll to the bottom of my post to edit.

### 5/5 — Awesome!

*2025-07-11*

What a beautiful new way to expand the reach of Outdoor Afro! The app is new and updates are frequently being pushed out. So great to be a part of this growing movement.

### 5/5 — Love that this app exists!

*2025-07-11, version 1.5.0*

I have a ton of trail-finding and step-tracking apps on my phone. But what I love about this one is that it’s got real-world community and thoughtfully curated trips that I can join even when I’m traveling for work. There’s sometimes not a trip when I want to go, but they also recommend spots that I can check out myself. Love it!

### 3/5 — Work in progress

*2025-07-08, version 1.5.0*

The app has a lot of activities listed and being able to fill out the waiver online is definitely better than the old Meetup process. However, it’s difficult to search for activities because location is not a filter option. Instead, the app wants to set a location on you as the user, which is unnecessary and doesn’t always meet the goal.

Also, my suggested activities aren’t linked to the leaders that I follow. I’m not sure of the benefit of following the leaders. The leaders also aren’t listed my location. So, unless you know all the names of the leaders in your target area as they were entered in the app, you can’t find them.

I’m hopeful that the app will continue to improve because I strongly believe in the mission and function of the organization.

### 3/5 — Buggy experience

*2025-07-07, version 1.5.0*

I cannot complete some of required fields on an event waiver. Fields are yellowed out and not accepting my entries. I can’t complete my event registration.

### 5/5 — App meh, groups great

*2025-06-23, version 1.4.5*

Can’t view any upcoming apps in my state (NY) for summer

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — App isn’t User Friendly

*2026-04-18*

Finding and connecting with other outdoor Black people has been just as difficult as it’s always been since Outdoor Afro left Meetup. Their new app isn’t user friendly and very few events are hosted. There’s just a bunch of information about things you can do, which doesn’t help you meet other Black people.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. Can you make sure your app is on the latest version? You should see an option to exit the internal post-trip survey that the app asks users to complete. If you're still havin an issue, can you reach out to our team at sf@outdoorafro.org?

We'd love to help!

Please note that the review/feedback the app was asking for is not public but internal.

Thank you!

### 1/5 — Go back to Meetup

*2025-10-30, version 1.9.0*

Hate to say it but this app is not user friendly; I much preferred the Meet up experience. Perhaps this app just needs to be redesigned.

### 1/5 — No Notifications

*2025-09-01, version 1.7.0*

While I am so proud of this app, I miss the Meetup app notifications when new events in my area were posted. This app doesn’t do that so you more than likely you’ll be waitlisted and/or miss an event altogether. I also do not get any notifications when I move from waitlist to attending… and there is no calendar syncing with this app either. It’s a bit of a mess. I hope this can be fixed so that the app is useful otherwise I’d highly suggest moving back to meetup.

### 1/5 — This App FORCES Participants to Leave Reviews

*2025-07-20*

This app forces you to leave a review after you’ve attended an event. You’re unable to see or sign up to future events unless you leave a review regarding the last event you attended. The choices given during the review process also may not reflect your actual experience.
Outdoor Afro should count themselves lucky that they’re not charging for an actual product, or the FTC would be all over them for forcing participants to leave reviews that may be misleading.

### 2/5 — Too Much Unnecessary Information

*2026-06-18, version 2.6.0*

The app isn’t easy to use. Even with the updates the first thing users see are activities happening in states we don’t live in.
Recommendations and Featured Content should be on secondary pages, not taking up three-fourths of the Home page.
If the purpose of the app is for the Black community to gather together, why aren’t all upcoming events visible on the Home page and in calendar order? Why do we need to hunt for them? Also, is anyone tracking event attendance since the creation of the app? It’s so difficult to use that we’ve seen a decline in scheduling/attendance in our area.

### 2/5 — Needs Work

*2025-10-08, version 1.8.4*

If this app is supposed to replace the Meet Up app it’s really falling short. This app is causing me to lose interest in Outdoor Afro activities and just link up with the friends I’ve made in the community.

1. I live in NC, there’s no reason I should open the app and see activities in California, Baltimore, and Florida. Their needs to be chapters just like on the meet up app.

2. I can’t see who’s coming. Sometimes that’s the determining factor on if I sign up or not. I recently went to an outdoor Afro meet up, only to find our leader was the only familiar face. It made me feel like everyone else has left the group for the same issues I’m having.

They definitely jumped the gun too soon on mandating this app.

### 2/5 — Excited about app but let down

*2025-06-24, version 1.4.5*

I was super excited about this app. I know there’s events happening near me but they don’t show up in my feed. When I search for events it finds some but doesn’t display. Rather disappointed.

### 2/5 — Recommendations Aren’t Local

*2025-05-30*

For some reason activity recommendations aren’t in my home state. Looking for adventures and being shown activities in Oregon and Colorado is just weird. This app has got a ways to go and shouldn’t have been released until it was ready.

**Developer response:** Thank you for downloading our app. Please note that the trips are posted by volunteer trip leaders who post trips as often as they can. You can follow a trip leader and/or enable app alerts to be alerted when a new trip is posted.

### 3/5 — Question

*2026-02-19, version 1.17.0*

Ik this is probably a stupid question and the answer is obvious but is this app just for the black community or can other people join (no hate genuinely wondering🫠)

### 3/5 — Gratitudes

*2025-09-16, version 1.8.1*

So grateful for this organization and the volunteer leaders who get us outside in community. The app is an exciting offering and am looking forward to improvements. As of now, i miss the ease of use with meetup, the sense of community and transparency with knowing who was going to be attending an event, photosharing, and messaging with ease. While joining múltiple chapter meetups/FB groups was cumbersome, it organized the locations easily and allowed easier search for activities and leaders. Would love the option to have to app organized by chapter, even as an opt in/out personlization. In app payment or links from app is definitely needed. Mine keeps defaulting to a region/city I do not live in and I have been unable to message leaders except when going through an event they are leading. Will use help function to sort this out if possible.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Not so trivial

*2026-07-24, version 2.12.0*

Transitioning from the meet up platform to the app temporarily lost me as a member of the group. Not so trivial to use at all, have to dig in to find the information, reminders/updates not coming through… I definitely have to work extra to stay connected. Meetup worked better for me.

### 5/5 — Fantastic!

*2026-03-28, version 2.0.0*

This app has made my work as a volunteer so much more effective!!!

### 5/5 — Vendor Application

*2025-11-27, version 1.14.0*

Very Easy

### 5/5 — 🌳✨ Outdoor Afro Magic: A Weekend to Remember! ✨🌳

*2025-10-09*

🌳✨ Outdoor Afro Magic:

We had a wonderful, wonderful, wonderful time at the Outdoor Adventure Camping Event — truly unforgettable! 🏕️💫

We met amazing people 🧡, laughed till our cheeks hurt 😂, and slept under the stars ✨. A curious raccoon even came by to “borrow” our marshmallows 🦝🔥 — talk about nature joining the fun!

The space was filled with beauty, joy, and community — from the cooking and washing stations 🍳🪣 to the shared meals and stories that filled the air. 🌾🍲

Canoeing on the water 🚣🏽‍♀️, stargazing at night 🌌, and feeling completely safe, seen, and connected — it was magnificent.

To everyone who showed up with laughter, light, and love — thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you! 🙏🏾💛

My first camping trip of many — and my heart is full. 🌻 #OutdoorAfro #BlackJoyOutside #CommunityHealing #NatureIsHome

### 5/5 — Glad that this app exists

*2025-09-02, version 1.7.0*

Being able to build community while either at home or on the move is so wonderful. Being able to follow leaders and get notifications when they are hosting events is very helpful to know when there are things happenings near me.

### 5/5 — Great App

*2025-07-11, version 1.5.0*

One thing I appreciate about this app that most other outdoor apps lack in is the ability to build community around the outdoors.

I can follow outdoor leaders in my area, visit the vetted spots they have recommended, and join them on trips!

### 5/5 — Amazing effort!

*2025-07-11, version 1.5.0*

Amazing that this organization put the effort in to create an app to better connect with community!! I’m so excited to engage with it and to see a community-based organization pour into themselves this way … especially in the age of tech monopolies and non-consensual data predation from big companies...
While the app is in its early stages, it is an awesome tool and will only evolve to include more seamless features and integration.

### 5/5 — Loving the Flexibility

*2025-07-11, version 1.5.0*

I love how I can view so many different options on the app. I know this is the first version, can’t wait to see how it progresses.

### 5/5 — Best way to find community outside

*2025-07-11, version 1.5.0*

The new Outdoor Afro app is amazing! Easy to use and convenient to find something to do this weekend!

### 5/5 — one stop shop!

*2025-07-11, version 1.5.0*

Love how much easier it is to sign up for trips through the app! MeetUp was fine but a bit hard to access. The app makes it easy for me to follow my local volunteer leader and keep track of all their upcoming trips. It’s also easy to reach out to them if i have any questions.
