### 4/5 — Ghost content. Hard to navigate the site.

*2026-06-06, version 1.5.4*

I get an e mail with an interesting article. When I select I get send elsewhere and cannot find the article. Painful.

### 2/5 — Wish they’d figure it out

*2025-09-25, version 1.5.4*

I’ve been a longtime subscriber and would read cover to cover. The app just seems harder to find the content I like. Why do I have to go to the website to find the gear guide? How will I know it’s out? Really wish they’d make it more user friendly because most of the content is still good - it’s just hard to find.

### 2/5 — Bummed

*2025-05-17, version 1.5.3*

I got outside+ because I liked the training advice, like four weeks to sending and finger training and how to get better foot work. Now I can’t find any of that information. What happened?

### 3/5 — Convenient for saving and reading articles, frustrating to use or provide links

*2025-04-22, version 1.5.3*

It’s nice to have a dedicated place for all of Outside’s articles on my phone but two big criticisms.

1. The search function is just terrible. It’s better than the website, but wish there were more filters to refine a search. At least the first results aren’t from 1998 and unrelated to what I was searching for unlike the website.

2. When I open links from Outside’s newsletter, they open automatically in my browser rather than the app. And there’s not a prompt to open the article in the app. Similarly, when I’ve linked to recipes in my family’s meal plan from the app, and accessed the meal plan from another device to click on the link, rather than sending me to the website on the laptop without the app, I was redirected to a link to download the app. It seems like the website and app are pulling from different sources since there’s no crossover. I’m not a tech-savvy person or designer, but it seems like there should be something in the links that sees if you have the app, and if so opens the app and if not opens the website, similar to Instagram (hate that I used that positively).

### 1/5 — Horrible app

*2024-10-16, version 1.5.1*

Extremely buggy, unable to change video quality even though that seems to be a feature. Not optimized for performance on iPhone. Needs a complete rework.

### 1/5 — Beware

*2024-10-16, version 1.5.1*

This membership came for free with my purchase of the Ikon pass. Unbeknownst to me, they automatically turn on auto renewal. So I was hit with a charge the following year when I didn’t even want the membership. From almost day one, I had trouble logging into my account. I had to reset my password multiple times. Luckily it let me reset it to finally turn off auto renewal. Very frustrating

### 1/5 — Do I need to cancel one day after purchasing?

*2024-10-01, version 1.5.1*

I've wanted to subscribe and read and watch Outside's content for some time now. But the Roku Outside TV doesn't recognize me and the Outside app crashes when I try to play something with AirPlay. I'm not going to pay this money to watch things on my iPhone. I want my husband and I to sit together and watch content on our tv together. Based upon what I see here in the other comments, I'm skeptical I will get a response. The Help section of the app just keeps directing me to articles that don't answer my questions.
REVIEW UPDATE: Developer response was that I could watch on the Apple TV app. Clearly responder did not read my review mentioning the app crashing.

**Developer response:** Thank you for your feedback. You can watch Outside's content on the Outside TV app https://apps.apple.com/us/app/outside-tv/id1187134756

### 1/5 — Just the magazine

*2024-09-21, version 1.5.1*

I don’t want to pay $90 for a bunch of content that I don’t want. I just want to read Outside magazine. I’ve subscribed to the hard copy for years, on and off. I’ve bought it off the rack. I read it when it was Mariah, the copy I had for years had an Indian kid on the cover (wish I still had it). I just want to read the magazine online, nothing else.

### 2/5 — ?

*2024-09-13, version 1.5.1*

Good articles, but why isn’t the app formatted for IPads? Seems like something that should have been done a while ago.

### 1/5 — $89.00 a year and still hijack Adds

*2024-08-10, version 1.5.1*

I wanted access to Yoga Journal only but had to go through an Outside subscription to get access. I was willing to tolerate that until, that is, this morning while trying to get through an important Yoga Journal article I was forced twice to view advert videos that I could not continue reading the article until the video finished taking over my mobile device.
Wonky membership: I opted-in for YJ emails but when I click on the links to articles I want to read I am taken to a YJ page that require another membership as it will not accept my Outside log in credentials.

Absolutely the worst membership experience - not at all a good value.

### 1/5 — Cannot Airplay

*2024-07-07, version 1.5.1*

This app is a fail on Apple AirPlay. It’s not on my Samsung TV+ even though it says it’s available, and I paid money for the subscription - in cheap AUD - to get these features.
Disappointing for a not-cheap paid app. Do better please Outside, you’re the new Ironman PE company 👎🏼

### 1/5 — Outside+ is limited

*2024-07-01, version 1.5.1*

And the app is as well. With the new approach and this new app, they have assumed that, as a reader, I am some kind of obsessed athlete. Who cares that they offer content from 16 magazines. I have zero interest. They completely missed their own boat. Many people who subscribed to the old Outside Magazine liked to read stories about adventure, travel, etc. Now, they boast about 16 magazines through this app. The problem? I have NO interest in any of those mags. This app, and the new content, are a disappointment.

### 2/5 — Bad content

*2024-06-17, version 1.5.1*

The app hasn’t crashed, however, the articles have terrible writers, they cite studies with links studied not related to the authors point, making things political that don’t need to be, and gear lists that consistently only have women’s gear. It is not a outdoors app, it is a city folk, females opinion app.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — What is the Point?

*2026-07-13, version 1.5.4*

What is the deal with this app? I downloaded the app to find more coverage of the 2026 Tour de France, since I enjoyed the articles from Velo writers I found through Google searches, yet the coverage that shows up in my feed is dated back to 2021! Searches only provide coverage that reaches 2025. Am I missing something? I have always been a fan of Outside magazine but this app is a mess. It’s not even sub-par; it’s horrible. I do hope the developers give it some serious attention and bring it up to date.

### 1/5 — Appli ne fonctionne pas

*2026-03-27*

Rien ne fonctionne impossible de se connecter

### 1/5 — Problème d’identification

*2026-01-01*

### 1/5 — Love the content

*2025-12-12, version 1.5.4*

Outside really needs to get their app organized. When I have a notification on the app icon that there is a message or new news story I might interested in, and then click on the app to open it, I see no link or reference to the “new” story. All I get sometimes is a story that I have already read and in some cases it’s several months old. Logically one would think when opening an app that is delivering news, the most recent stories would appear and then in descending order the older stories. Not with the Outside app. Really annoying 😕

### 1/5 — Worst app I have

*2025-10-22, version 1.5.4*

I want to love this app. I have read Outside affiliated articles for years and was stoked when they created an app vs needing to use a browser. But this app is just terrible. It will show me the same articles over and over again (half the time my google feed shows me new or old articles I’ve never seen before the app does). If I was halfway through reading and stop suddenly, it becomes impossible to find unless I can remember the specific name of the article to search. The algorithm definitely does not understand what I enjoy reading. I would absolutely NOT pay for this if it didn’t come with Gaia because I actually use Gaia.

### 1/5 — Junk App and Publication

*2025-10-13, version 1.5.4*

What a waste. I’ve subscribed to Outside for 35 years. I just cancelled. This app experience is a horrible joke, and the reporting has gone downhill after they laid off and fired most of the editorial team and their star journalists.

Reporting is now meek and lacks the investigative authority they once carried. No longer will they take politicians to task for their failings in the Outdoor space. The reviews seem to cheer for all and fail to take a position of which product is best.

Sure seems like Outside is targeting the lowest common denominator, seeking clicks rather than meaningful journalism, and pandering to the right wing and their advertisers rather than producing for their audience and customers.

Shame on Robin Thurston for ruining a stalwart American journalism.

### 1/5 — Screen rotation

*2025-09-17, version 1.5.4*

Installed app and signed in. After app opened the orientation of article I wanted to read would not rotate. Garbage!
I subscribed to Outside+ with Gaia gps. Should allow me to use the trailfork app as an included benefit but app would not let me log in. Chatbot help said I should change password. Why would I want to change password and update every app and login associated with the outside+ family of content? Total scam I say! I feel like they make it difficult so I can’t use the content I have paid for. I asked for a refund and they simply said no, that all they could do is not auto-renew in a year. So I have paid for a year of Gaia gps. And a bunch of extras I can’t use
Avoid at all costs

### 1/5 — The App Crashes

*2025-08-10, version 1.5.4*

This app isn’t working. It crashes when you try to open.

### 1/5 — Awful App & AppleTV Browser

*2025-04-08, version 1.5.3*

The design of the apps is atrocious. It’s incredibly difficult to find programs. The presorted themes don’t indicate if it’s a film or a 2 minute episode, and the episodes don’t ever indicate the series. Looking at the AppleTV app right now, under Other I could select Ep1 (pic of runners) or Ep1 (picture of different runners) or Ep 6 (fella in front of a community garden)…why is this such a bum design? I find it frustrating that it’s difficult to find something later when it appeared to be something worth coming back to. Also, the app does not let you save shows to watch on the road, so you’ll always need data to use it.

### 1/5 — Try to cancel plus & best of luck

*2024-12-27, version 1.5.2*

I just want to cancel plus, again, but all I get are canned responses. Trailforks was $2 a month, now it’s $80 a year for garbage I don’t want.

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Always something good to read

*2025-10-26, version 1.5.4*

Plus - Gaia GPS - subscription was an easy decision for me.

### 5/5 — Interesting Content

*2025-08-15, version 1.5.4*

I enjoy reading articles that align with my personal interests. Keep at it.

### 5/5 — Inspiring

*2025-08-01, version 1.5.4*

Because no matter how much you accomplish there are people who push harder

### 5/5 — Terrific!

*2024-11-09, version 1.5.2*

Everything I want to use and read is right here.

### 5/5 — Awesome but.

*2024-07-11, version 1.5.1*

I love the app. I was hooked on their channel and their programs were inspiring and informative. My favorite recreational activities are cycling, hiking and kayaking. But all of the sudden they went of the air. So I tried desperately to find out about where could I watch my shows. So I downloaded this app which is filled with fascinating articles and blogs. But there’s nothing about kayaking. I also subscribed to the magazine. But again, nothing on kayaking. Other than that I love the app and that’s why I gave it five stars. _ Burtart1

### 5/5 — Super enjoy my Outside Mag subscription

*2024-05-26, version 1.5.1*

One of only a few paid subscriptions I have. Thoroughly enjoy the content!

### 5/5 — Outside your Trail Forks Maps Apple Watch Support

*2024-03-26, version 1.5.1*

Apple Watch support Trail Forks please***

### 5/5 — Great Magazine

*2023-09-17, version 1.2.0*

Keeps me occupied on slow days. I look forward to a daily read from Yoga Journal. Tons of short and long articles, videos and information on a variety of topics. It’s like having a supportive friend. Thank you!

### 5/5 — Daily destination for adventure

*2023-06-24, version 1.1.0*

This app is my go to for a daily dose of inspiration and news in climbing, cycling, adventure and more. I check the news apps and get depressed, I check social media and get insecure, I check Outside+ and I get inspired to get outside and get after it. All the best outdoor and cycling publications in one place.

### 5/5 — Awesome but.
