### 1/5 — Waardeloos

*2025-10-14, version 1.510.0*

### 1/5 — Keep getting Access Denied errors

*2025-09-23*

Unable to login to my account due to “Access denied (403)

Current session has been terminated.

For further information, do not hesitate to contact us.”

### 1/5 — The app does not work

*2025-09-19, version 1.498.0*

5 days in with the app working sometimes and other days not. Still cannot add card as link does not work. This app is a complete waste of digital space. Good idea but need to dimiss the current developer and hire another company to get it working. App is clearly not been tested before release

### 1/5 — Can’t log in

*2025-09-18, version 1.498.0*

I logged into the previous version without a hitch, but then it forced me to install the new version, which requires setting a new password. Entering my email, it simply tells me: “Something went wrong on our side.”

### 1/5 — Onwerkbaar

*2025-09-18, version 1.498.0*

Mijn account hangt dus ergens in limbo.

### 1/5 — Worst app

*2025-09-18*

Does not work

### 1/5 — Al dagen uit de lucht

*2025-09-14, version 1.495.0*

### 1/5 — Overpaying

*2025-09-09, version 1.495.0*

Getting charged extra 5 euro per travel, and being refunded only 1/5 of travels

### 1/5 — Huh?

*2025-08-02*

Ok so how do you actually use the app to pay ? All info is generic for a paper card, credit card or ApplePay.

**Developer response:** Hi, you don't use the app to pay. You use your debit or credit card, either in plastic or the digital version. The app shows you the trips you make and the cost for those trips. You can also make an expense report, apply for age discount, etc. You don't need the app to travel, but it gives you a lot more insight than your bank statement. Link your card to the app and you'll see your trips!

### 1/5 — Can’t add credit card

*2025-07-03*

Trying to add credit card I used for bus trip yesterday. Charged me $9.40 for a 10 minute ride! Does not accept the input, no error message, just gojng round and round in a loop. Trying to add with alternative method which requires the 18-digit code starting with NLOV from my credit card statement and, wait for it, the amount in euros. But on my statement it only shows dollars, of course. The developers don’t think a 18-digit code is unique enough? What trash. What I’ll be trying next is to guess the euro amount based on yesterdays euro-usd conversion rate and 3% conversion charge that chase supposedly charges, and then keep adding/subtracting cents until the system accepts it. But first I’ll finish this 1-Star review of this trash app.

UPDATE: just received an ignorant response from the developers. They completely ignore the main issue that cards can’t be added (“sorry”).

Next they say that “us developers” did think about different currencies and provide a link (zelfregelen.ovpay.nl). But that’s the link I’ve been using and that’s where only euro currencies can be added. There is no option to select another currency. I don’t know the euro amount. In their trash app, there’s a link you can click if you don’t know the euro amount, and it says to “call your bank to ask them what the euro amount was”. I did call my bank (chase) but they are not able to provide that number at all. I tried my trick of guessing the euro amount and then adding/subtracting cents until I get the right amount. But this was not a succes. My initial guess was off, and after a few tries of neighboring amounts, you get to do captchas and then get locked out (“unknown error occurred”).

I’ve been on the phone four times for support of this app and the (very friendly and courteous) support staff admitted it just doesnt work.

I’ve done my due diligence being on the phone for hours with their support and my bank to try get this to work. The ignorant response from the developers (probably still visible below) further shows that they don’t know what they’re doing.

**Developer response:** Well..., thank you for your rant. Let's try to keep it nice, works best for all parties ;-) I'm sorry to hear adding a credit card didn't work for you. Us developers did however think about different currencies. Please go to zelfregelen.ovpay.nl and follow the steps. Enjoy your day!

### 1/5 — Bad at everything

*2025-06-23, version 1.464.0*

Only the graphic is cute. The rest are trash. Cannot open the app always loading. Cannot add card always error. I don’t understand why this app even exists? This is not helping please fix

### 1/5 — Verificatiecode niet ontvangen

*2025-06-22, version 1.464.0*

### 1/5 — Error

*2025-05-10, version 1.450.0*

Can’t login after creating an account. Error message: Sorry, something went wrong. There was a small hiccup on our side. Try again.

I have tried for many days, but still the same error.

*2025-02-27, version 1.363.2*

### 1/5 — Doesn‘t work with German VISA Credit Card

*2025-02-13, version 1.347.1*

Nice idea but it doesn’t work with a German VISA card.
The card can be used for travel and you can use the website for correcting. The app itself is useless for foreign card holders.

## Most critical reviews (10 lowest-rated)

### 1/5 — Cobrança errada

*2026-08-11, version 1.662.0*

### 1/5 — App

*2026-06-25, version 1.655.0*

Poo

### 1/5 — Errors and problems

*2026-06-18*

I am a Dutch citizen living abroad. I tried to set up the app, eventually succeeded. Not after many frustrating errors like “something went wrong on our end” and endless re-sending of verification codes

You need a Dutch address to have the “OV pas” sent to. Well, that’s a problem for me. But you can use a credit card as pass. This is as frustrating as the luggage rules of an airline.

In trying to set up the credit card a browser window was opened outside the app, and I was greeted by a 403 Forbidden browser error. Likely the gateway only accepts IP traffic from within the region.

Some questions and remarks:
- why not allow the pass to be sent abroad? Charge a shipping fee if you have to.
- but really: why not have a virtual transit pass on the phone? Phones have been capable of NFC for years
- check your IP gating, your security measures are failing users from abroad

I have also signed up for a Belgian transit pass. A world of difference, super easy and none of the headaches.

### 1/5 — Broken for me

*2026-06-14, version 1.655.0*

Falls at the first step. I get a 403 forbidden message when I try to add a card - that might actually allow me to use the app.

### 1/5 — Absolutely awful

*2026-06-01, version 1.640.0*

No-one can ever have tested this garbage before vomiting it out to the public. Avoid this and just tap your credit card

### 1/5 — Useless

*2026-05-24, version 1.640.0*

Useless app, can’t add debit card.

### 1/5 — Won’t let me add my card

*2026-03-28*

The app kept glitching and crashing for me. When I finally was able to make an account it would not let me add my debit or credit card and had no other options to pay

### 1/5 — Just won’t work

*2026-03-04, version 1.595.0*

Can’t add a card to my account. It just says ‘forbidden’ from the app and the desk top. Cant find any details to complain or get help, the chatbot makes you want to scream.

### 1/5 — Terrible, do not use

*2025-12-22*

Signing in is only successful after 20 tries if you are lucky. Signing out takes even more patience. And do not even try to delete your account, it will not let you do it. What a nightmare!!

### 1/5 — Why bother to create app

*2025-11-30, version 1.534.0*

Not possible to link any card. Most likely due to overseas access being blocked. So why put this on international app stores?

## Most praised reviews (10 highest-rated)

### 5/5 — Great for tracking travel spend when in NL

*2024-10-21, version 1.286.1*

Used UK debit card for first trip on NL train without issue. Upon starting the second trip on a NL train I was able to get the all important transaction reference to add my Debit card to the OVPay app. Following this on a recent visit to Rotterdam I was pleased to see realtime push notifications of my check in and check outs on the RET allowing me to see spend and whether I had checked in and checked out. Great system and app not well understood by other international visitors.

### 5/5 — Trop bien !

*2024-07-22, version 1.212.0*

Très pratique, je recommande !

### 5/5 — Great app - bad reviews misunderstand what it does

*2024-05-19*

Attention! This app does not allow you to pay for public transit in the Netherlands. Instead, it allows you to track what you've spent and when you checked in and out with your credit card.

To set it up, create an account and then register a charge that shows up on your card once you've tapped your card or Apple Pay on any transit reader.

The app allows you to set up notifications for certain events and is very straightforward. I cannot find any complaint and I wish other cities and countries have this feature as well.

Well done, the Netherlands! Not only did you crush physical infrastructure, you did a good job on this digital infrastructure as well!

**Developer response:** Thank your for your review and the context, Jerry! We really appreciate it :)

### 5/5 — Alles goes

*2023-08-04, version 0.386.2*

Alles goed

### 4/5 — Notifications no longer work

*2025-12-18*

With Apple’s latest update (26.2) notifications no longer through on and to my iPhone 14 and Apple Watch. Not sure if it is the operating system or the app. Tried solving through different suggested methods but with no success.

### 4/5 — Reminder- You don’t add your card to pay on this app, just monitor spend and use!

*2024-05-03*

Once I added our recent trips via our bank account transaction details it was quite convenient dashboard to monitor spending and any missed checks (in or out).

Hoping those that believe this is a payment method app are aware it’s only a transaction log and dispute resolution tool.

**Developer response:** Thanks for your review!

### 3/5 — Have to log in every day

*2025-09-22, version 1.498.0*

The app works mostly fine, but for some reason it forces me to log in every day which is very annoying.

### 3/5 — Wait for use ...

*2025-02-21, version 1.363.2*

Nothing...

### 3/5 — Still incomplete

*2023-10-27, version 0.443.0*

Does not appear possible to add more than one card or even different instances of the same card (ie physical card plus same card on your watch). This makes it impossible to get a complete overview of your trips.

### 2/5 — Poor instructions

*2026-04-18*

Step 1 - download app and set up an account.
Step 2 - use a debit, credit or mobile payment to pay for any kind of public transit ride (train, tram, bus, etc). To do this, scan your payment method at an entry gate and at the completion of your ride, exit gate.
Step 3 - Access your payment method account to look up the charge for the ride you just took. Once that charge has posted on your account you can now register that payment method on the OVpay app.
Now you have an overview of your trips in the app.
